Darkpool | 1032 comments Yum!!

Yeah, I have voted in the flag referendum, but I think the options presented are all so horrid that I'll be voting for the status quo in the next one.

The marmalade is a really pretty colour!

My parents were preserving machines! The whole kitchen would be full of pots, bowls, food & knives - along with their slave labour (that would be my sisters & me)

My husband, kids & I were all in favour of the flag changing - till we saw the final options. I know much better designs were submitted.

My husband & son aren't voting at all, I'm voting for the koru (although I preferred the blue & white option) my daughter a graphic designer is voting for Red Peak. She is pretty fluent on this whole debacle.

message 453: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 1595 comments I voted to make some use of the money that has been spent already! But my sentiments very much echo Darkpool's. The designs are more suited to sports and don't invoke any patriotic emotions which I feel a nations flag should -- IMO.

We have seen some of your flag options back in Canada. In fact, you had many Canadians in favour of the lazor eye Kiwi bird.

Lesley | 1595 comments Many years ago my kitchen resembled a preserving factory beginning in November (marmalade a& strawberry jam) through to late February with freezing corn and bottling pears, WBCs of course. Before all the equipment was put away for the year, jelly from the seasons scraps was made.

I think other than the koru they look like company logos - which Red Peak is of course. The red & blue fern & the white & black fern are also very similar to existing logos.

The blue & white koru made me think of waves & the sea or clouds & the sky.

My husband wanted the silver fern on the black background. He was in Italy a few months ago & all the NZ war graves had the silver fern on them.

Heh. I'm Canadian born & both my kids had school projects/ uni dissertations on changing the flag, where they gave the Canadian debates as background. Note that Pearson didn't get the (hideous) design he wanted.

Number 10 makes me think of Lazer Kiwi.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 220 comments I hope the southern cross will be retained and a little union flag in a corner top left. I'm dual nationality so I'd like to hang on to those.

The southern cross is the nearest thing to evoking patriotism and the union flag represents NZ history.

I also like the silver fern pattern. Not easy choosing.

The current flag is often confused with the Aussie one but perhaps better to hang on to that than have some of the other designs, as some have said they look like company logos.

I agree with you regarding the Southern Cross. History says that is how the country was discovered - by following the pointer.

Not only does the silver fern look like a company logo, it is! Just as the stylised kiwi has also been used many times as a logo.

The constant cry regarding the current flag is that it is always mistaken for the Australian flag. However, most non New Zealand people see the silver fern as a feather. Do we want that white feather on our flag given its connotation?

Totally agree Melissa. Not only are the NZ stars five pointed RED forming the part of the Southern Cross, but the Aussie flag also has the five stars of the Southern Cross marked with seven pointed stars, and includes the much larger Commonwealth/Federation Star.

I am not a Kiwi but I like your flag; but I can understand that there would be frustration in being mistaken for Australian (We get called American all the time from our accents)).

That being said no one even remembers our old flag, The Red Ensign

Hey Kathleen I was in your neck of the wood last night!

I went to a fundraiser for the Ponsonby Baptist Church last night (one of my husband's sisters is a member of the gospel band Heaven Bent) & then we went for a cruise to look at the Franklin Road lights. Maybe because of Christmas in the Park, but traffic wasn't too bad & both the choir & the lights were amazing!

It does - & Kathleen & I both live in humid parts of the country. Some parts of the South Island can be colder though. Yesterday was the first day I have felt warm since coming back from SE Asia- it's all relative isn't it?

Very true, Carol. Even Vancouver isn't "cold" relative to many parts of Canada. However, it would likely be cold relative to NZ.

Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace. I'm a light user so more expensive seemed a waste of money. Camera not wonderful but I'm a crap photographer anyway.

My husband says mine has been reduced further to $79 at Noel Leeming. But some of the basic phones are even cheaper.

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments There were much nicer designs for a flag and they didn't get chosen. I think a lot of people will be voting status quo in protest!

Cherries ripe and I'm getting my grandson to pick them. We're getting buckets!

Poor little blue penguins are being pestered by the tourists who all want to be close up - preferably sticking camera into beak! - and get balky when we tell them this is NZ and we keep a 5 metre distance from our wildlife. I think I am sworn at every night I'm on duty!

Keep fighting the good fight with the penguins - what is wrong with (some) people,

Sigh. cherries are my favourite fruit.

With the flag we have had family in & out all day - & of course the flag argument came up. One of Marty's brothers is all in favour of the new one - because it looks like a logo!

I never thought a flag choice could be so bad that I would vote for the present one - but I was wrong.

message 493: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 1595 comments As you say p.d.r., there were much nicer designs for the flag that were not chosen. IMO the leader of the campaign is determined to have the fern (white feather) on dreary black so all selection was engineered. I do believe we will end up with status quo in the final vote.

Love cherries. Always shout myself some in season. Last year they were still reasonable at $20 per kilo, but at $29 per kilo this year they remained on the shelf. Just like oysters, I always treated myself to a dozen until the price went over the top.

Only minor; but enough of one to shock people and wake them up.
