I have just read Vita Nostra, and as one of the reviewers noticed it is basically Harry Potter written by Kafka. Highly recommended to all lovers of delightfully disturbing books.
This week my top three are not really scary, but definitely a tad spooky and atmospheric:1. Sabriel - Some pretty creative concepts around death.
2. The Painted Man - Full of nightly demon terrors!
3. I Shall Wear Midnight - Spooky witchy drama, laugh out loud moments and clever Pratchett insights :-)
Hmm. Something that might fit are....The Girl With All the Gifts
The Fold
Both are more scifi thrillers with horrific elements than straight horror novels.
Locke and Key starting with Welcome to Lovecraft keeps haunting me. Not sure if The Exorcist will be as scary as when I first read it.
The Strain was great (too bad the sequels are not), and Wylding Hall has some great chilling moments too.
Yeah I nowadays I read more thrillers than straight horror. I kinda miss it.
