I am planning on self publishing my first piece on Amazon soon. The writing is a revised masters thesis. I am fully aware very few people will check it out, however it serves to familiarize myself with the self publishing process. I do have a question though, has anyone self published on Amazon a writing containing footnotes? Do I need to change the way I cited the sources, or are footnotes OK with Amazon formatting?

You can do it, but I'm afraid I don't know how. I've read a few novels with footnotes and in those circumstances they are very annoying. In an academic piece they are appropriate. There is probably an on-line guide.

Thanks. As I said, I felt this is a great opportunity to learn how Amazon self publishing works. I have a 50 + page paper sitting around, thought I would put it to some use :)

I think it depends on how extensive the footnoting is. For example, in a book where there is some use of native words that seem difficult to pronounce (even in one's mind), I think a reader would appreciate a guide in the form of a footnote at the bottom of a page. However, if you are turning a thesis into a novel, there is no need to account for your sources. A few words at the beginning in the preface and/or a bibliography at the back might be appreciated by some. I am an academic with extensive editing and reviewing experience, so feel free to message me privately on this too.
