Malcolm, did the clay models that came to life travel alone or with some of the students?
Did only the students (not the teachers) make the models that came to life? How old are these girls/boys?

A school in South (?) London is very good at making very realistic clay models of mostly historical characters (I remember Red Indians (many years pre PC) and Sinn Fein). The models are so life-like that one summer holiday they come to life, grow to normal size and decide to travel around the world. Lots of adventures (mini-spoiler follows) I remember that the Red Indians find their original tribe and decide to stay. (Further spoiler follows) Most of the group return to their school and their cupboard. The book was given to me as a Christmas present from my CofE Sunday School in around 1960 (when I was 11), and I believe was fairly newly written when I received it. Two quirks – near the beginning, the book talks about the London Passenger Transport Board, and very near the end the book makes an out of context but brief, respectful and complimentary comment about Winston Churchill.
I remember reading the book many times, and it is one of the few I have that qualifies for re-reading at that level.
