It is one of those books which I will definitely go back to and re-read. There is just so much in it, that a single reading doesn't do it justice. I was amazed at how compelling it was. I can't believe I have had it on my shelves for 20 years and have only just got to it now.

Skandia (sfgirl) | 435 comments Crime and Punishment is one of those books that has stayed with me since I first read it in high school. I agree, there is really something compelling about it, because it's not an easy reading by far.

Finished 12/31/14

I was very skeptical when picking up this book. My friends have loved it and recommended this to me many times but I just wasn't sure I like this author and historical romances tend to go down a similar path a lot.
A thing I didn't know about this book before starting to read, was that one of the main characters is made after Dr.House. An instant bonus for me because I'm a huge House fan.
So of course I loved Piers. That's a given, but for my greater surprise I loved the heroine, Linnet, even more. She was clear headed, intelligent and witty. Never let Piers bully her and didn't bother to always act like a lady. Well, she had tried but THAT got her into a mess in the first place.
I really enjoyed the book although, it got slightly boring and tilted towards typical historical romance for a while in the middle but great characters and very unique plot twist at the end made it worth reading.

Book: The Rocky Road to Romance (Elsie Hawkins #4) by Janet Evanovich The Rocky Road to Romance by Janet Evanovich.
Date read: 1/1/15
Rating: 5 Stars
Theme: Animal on the cover.

Review:
Loved it! A re-read for me but I love going back and reading some of my favorite book and this is one of them. I know most people have mixed reviews about Evanovich's earlier work, but I kind of like the fall in love/lust at first sight. Over the top plots and the characters are hilarious and Elsie Hawkins is hilarious with her antics with her gun and her car.

Book: To Marry A Scottish Laird (An English Bride In Scotland, #2) by Lynsay Sands To Marry A Scottish Laird by Lynsay Sands.
Date Read: 12/26/14
Rating: 4 Stars
Theme: Book 2 in the An English Bride In Scotland Series.

Review:
I ended up really liking the book. The hero, Campbell meets a boy in distress, and gets hurt trying to protect him. The boy takes care of him who turns out to be a girl, Joan who has been tasked by her dying mother to carry a message to the Laird McKay, the her o from the 1st book. Campbell eventually figures out the boy is actually a girl. I really liked the fact both hero and heroine are unsure of each other and both love each other but doesn't think the other one does. There is a bit of mystery as someone is trying to kill Joan. I think it was a good book, I had a problem with the ending of the book a little bit. (view spoiler)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 386 comments Good job, Skandia. I was wondering whether we had a roll this week.

I am going to go for Cover Item No People. I am currently reading two books which will work for this, The Remains of the Living by Ian Church (which I have to read for my RL book club, but it really isn't very good so I am going quite slowly) and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger , which I should have finished today.

I really have nothing good to say about this book.
Nothing happened in this book. There was no development in Gideon's and Eva's relationship. Just the same old, same old. They fight, have sex, fight again, have sex again ...
I don't think Gideon will change. He's the craziest, creepiest control freak ever.
I really hope they don't reproduce.

Petya | 234 comments I read the alternate - The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1) by Marie Lu - no people on the cover
Read: 04/01/15
Rated: 5 stars
Review:I loved the book. There were some things that annoyed me to no end but overall it was a fun sometimes intense read.
While I was reading I was imaging that this is how vilians become powerfull. I'm not saying that the Daggers are evil but the training and killing... it felt like they were the vilians. It was cool and exciting and new.
I honestly thought in the beginning that Adelina's power would be to kill people. But it wasnt. Her power was illusion. It sounds like a really cool power and perfect for a vilian. When Rafaelle said that thing that soon she would be able to make others believe they feel pain and despair I was like, yep she is going to become evil.
It was sad when the Daggers left her and her sister but I really cant see how they didnt see that she would become dangerous. I meant she was feeding off of fear and anxiaty and all the bad emotions, thats a big clue. I liked how she became stronger and stronger and her power grew.
The one thing that bothered me the most has to be Adelina's disloyalty. It happens a lot in books and movies and it bothers me soo much. It would have been so much easier if she just told the Daggers about Teren the first time they talked. She could feed him wrong information and everyone would be happy. And yeah, I know that he kept her sister prisoner but couldnt she ask the Daggers for help? It would make them trust her and she could keep the sister safe. But nooo we have to keep secrets and keep lying to the people that help her. About Violetta. I dont like her. She only caused trouble and pain to Adelina. Her power would come in hand in the future no doubt but I still dont like her. I hope I see something more from her.
The final battle was just... painfull to read. Just as we are about to win, ops Violetta loses her grip on Terens power and then we go downhill. He almost kills Adelina. Then in her pain she doesnt see Enzo and hurts him instead of Teren. And there goes Enzo dead. Maybe? I dont really believe that he is dead.
It was perfectly written, cant wait to see how the thing with the princess who has the power to raise the dead will fit in and whether her and Adelina would team up or she would be the enemy, or Adelina would be? I cant wait to find out.

I honestly didn't think I'd like this book. I tend to dislike chicklit but this book really wasn't in that category. And I normally don't like humour, but this had me laughing out loud. I had also thought it was going to be like The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night Time which I hated, so I was so surprised when I started reading it and realised how much I loved the characters, and how invested I became in the story. I really couldn't put it down. I was so hoping for a HEA ending, and, well, I wasn't disappointed but then it was the kind of book where you wouldn't be. I can't believe how much I enjoyed reading it. It just goes to show that when almost everyone raves about a book there is usually something in it.

Date Read: 1/9/15

Theme: No People on the cover.

Review:
I am going to be keep it simple. I really liked the book. It did not read as technical jargon, but with humor and thrown in with his personal life. It made it easier to read and not be bored. Mike Brown reminded me of my grade school years when I was obsessed with astronomy and how much I loved learning about it back then and he revived that old interest again. I was one of those people who was sad to see Pluto being kicked out from Planetary status and reading what went on with a little historical background was a great learning experience.

Your book should be read by Friday every week. Post a little review, rating and date read and that's should be all!

Review:Now that I had a day to think about the book and how all the books connect I figured it out. I figured how they are connect. In The Giver they said there were other communities and in this book they said there was a whole other village and 'there were no beasts' it all clicked.
I really liked the plot it was intriguing and fun. I liked the releationship between our main characters and my favorite character has to be little Mat. He is so fun and adorable.
I liked how Kira slowly realises how her world is not how she was told to be and she wasnt free but in a prison.
I really wasnt surprised that her father turned out. It was a heartwarming moment between Kira and her father.
Overall, I really liked the book and the writing style and cant wait to read the rest of the series.

Thief (Love Me with Lies, #3) by Tarryn Fisher by Tarryn Fisher

Finished 1/15/15
4 stars

Last book in the Opportunist Trilogy finishes the story of Caleb and Olivia. Over ten years of one of the most dysfunctional and controversy relationships ever. With or without help from other people, their own stupid decisions and some unfortunate coincidences, their love is put through more tests than it's even possible to imagine.

This last book is not as good as the previous two books in series but still a roller coaster of emotions and lies. Frustrating but beautiful, because Tarryn Fisher can write about the most ugliest fight and betrayal beautifully with deep feeling and honesty.
There is always a way when you want something badly. It's the decision about how to get it and what will be the price of it all.
This whole series gives a meaning to saying “Everything is fair in love and war”. It's so deliciously twisted and brutal without the sweet, lame and bubbly love story. Just the honest take-no-prisoners fight for happiness and love.

Book: Good Omens by Terry Pratchett Good Omens by Terry Pratchett.
Date Read: 1/15/15

Theme: Book cover is at least 50 % black.

Review:
The world is coming to an end and everybody seems to be preparing for it except an angel, Aziraphale and a demon, Crowley who have long became sort of friends just by being in each others proximity for so long and they have grown fond of the human race. The way to stop them is to find the Anti-Christ, except the anti-Christ is misplaced. This is a hilarious account of Aziraphale and Crowley trying to stop the rapture, along with many many other characters and what they are up to before the end of the world. And According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, the end of the world is coming on Saturday. Although it had quite a few laugh out loud moments, there were some reference that I think I just missed not knowing enough about Christianity, or something because something just flew over my head. But more so there were so many characters and smaller stories happening that it was hard to keep everyone straight, but nevertheless it still works. My favorites by far are Aziraphale and Crowley's antics.

This book is one of the reasons I often feel a bit indifferent towards this series. Some of them are good, some are not so good. This one was one of the latter. Scarpetta has to investigate a murder of a journalist, apparently drowned in an old shipping yard, but before long the suspicious characters start piling up, the FBI steps in, the Navy gets involved and it all becomes a global catastrophe. Of course, her niece, Lucy, is right at the forefront as always. It wasn't a bad read but it didn't grip me.
