Book: After the Storm by Maya Banks

Beware! Rant ahead!
OMG! What in the name of all that is holy was that?!
It is virtually impossible to associate this book with the rest of the KGI series. The writing is simply appalling with repetitive scenes and word choices, the characterization is completely incomprehensible and the plot is one of the more ridiculous out there.
Donovan, the sexy, geeky Kelly brother, who had such amazing potential in the previous books, is barely recognizable in the borderline psychotic and obsessive hero of After the Storm. He takes one look at Eve and decides that she's "the one" and proceeds to take over her life whether she's interested or not. Granted Eve is in an awful predicament and in desperate need of help for herself and her traumatized siblings, but Van's controlling attitude is simply creepy.
Speaking of Eve, while emotionally scared and/or physically abused heroines are the norm for KGI, Banks has gone overboard with this one. Ostensibly a strong willed fighter, Eve is actually passive, compliant and detached. Even though she has ample opportunity to stand up for herself, her solution to every obstacle it to run. This is particularly apparent in the contrived conflict toward the end.
As to the suspense plot, it is virtually non-existent with a villain who barely puts in an appearance and a motive that doesn't make much sense.
As for the Kelly clan, why has the family turned into a simpering pile of goo? Yes, the men are besotted with their wives but is it really necessary to go on and on about it ad nauseam. The only bright spark in this otherwise travesty of a book were Rusty Sean. Of course, we are going to have to wait for their book because Swanny and Hancock come first although I might just skip them.

I was worried to read this book as me and PNR do not usually mix, however I was pleasantly surprised as I loved this book!!
Karou is a normal teenage girl with blue hair and tattoo's, and is well liked by most everyone.
Her friends always love her little made up stories about the creatures she knows and look forward to hearing about them as she sketches them in her note book.........the thing is they are not made up, the creatures are real!
Karou has been brought up by a creature called Brimstone and is and errand runner for him, by using portholes in the shop that Brimstone lives in, Karou goes all over the world to collect the thing he needs the most, teeth!
The thing is she doesn't know why!
All of a sudden there are black handprints being left on the portholes around the world, made by an angel, and he has his eye on Karou!!

Book: The Thrill of It - Lauren Blakely

Review:
I'm not a big fan of NA and I don't know what made me decide to buy this one - maybe the premise of a virgin call girl is what pulled me in and I think it was free at the time, or very very cheap. I honestly don't remember now why I decided to get it but I'm glad I did. It was angsty but not over the top. Both MCs were the NA requisite screwed up but this book (maybe the entire series) is about how they are trying to get un-screwed up. I think at the beginning of the book Trey was a little ahead of Harley, only in that he did choose to start going to group and therapy where Harley was kind of forced into it. But Harley was open to it. She may have started going because of the blackmail but she allowed the therapy to start to work on her and she began to see just how skewed her thinking had become.
I was worried for awhile that Trey fought so hard to keep his reasons for his addiction to himself, held that part of himself back from Harley. It wasn't fair and I'm glad Harley, just her being her, was enough to break down those barriers for him.
I thought her being able to break away so easily from her pimp was a little too pollyanna-ish. I can't imagine in real life she could just walk away like that. I'm not sure that in real life there really is such a thing as a virgin call girl with a pimp that didn't at some point force her into actual sex. But that's a different story than the one being told. This wasn't a dark, gritty ugly NA - it was about messed up people working hard to get better and doing it better together.

This series is on my TBR list... doesn't sound like I'll be having fun towards the end :-(

I've enjoyed most of the books in the series bar one or two but this one was a travesty. The author even apologized for it on her Facebook page :0(

Read:
The Dirty Streets of Heaven by Tad Williams (Bobby Dollar #1)
Finished: 22 January 2014
Rating: *****
The endless battle between Heaven and Hell is being fought on the streets of Earth, day after day, one soul at a time. The angel Doloriel, in his current earthly incarnation known as Bobby Dollar, is an advocate for the newly departed and spends his days arguing in favour of his clients' souls' passage to Heaven. He may not be anyone's traditional idea of a heavenly being, but he's reasonably content with his life and good at his job - until a human soul goes missing without a trace on Bobby's watch, and suddenly the gun-toting, tough-talking angel has a whole lot of trouble on his plate...
An original, highly entertaining take on the angels and demons theme. Lots of action, humour and engaging story that kept me glued to the page. A great addition to the UF genre

Can I ask a favour please?
I'm out singing with the band tonight and have zero signal, just come outside to post this, can someone please do this week's roll if Carrie comes back as I don't think I'll be able to keep checking with my dodgy signal!
If not don't worry I can keep checking throughout the evening x
I'll keep an eye on it until I go to sleep (which will probably be in ~4h, since it's 22:45 here now) and can roll if Carrie posts. There'd still be several hours left after that time, though... can someone else take over later or should I roll with the free pass if we haven't heard from her by then?

No worries, V, I'm at home anyway so it's no problem at all. :)
I'll be up for another hour or so and will roll before going to bed, just to be on the safe side.

Book: Animal Attraction - Jill Shalvis
Read: January 25, 2015

Review:
I very much enjoyed this installment of the animal lovers in Sunshine, ID. Jade and Dell had already been circling around each other for months before this book opens, but you had a hint of that in the first book, so you don't really feel like you missed anything. The timing is now several weeks before she is supposed to return home to Chicago (which she doesn't really want to do, regardless of her feels for Dell) and as the time gets closer, the tension between the two amps higher and higher. They are both afraid of the other - he knows getting involved with her means attachment, which he doesn't do. And she knows getting involved with him would only bring heartbreak because she does do attachment. But these two mean alot more to each other than they're willing to admit and once they realized how much, it's time for her to leave. Neither feels like the other wants her to stay, so neither of them asks. They make noises about trying to see each other long distance but neither really believes the other will make the effort. Of course it's no surprise that almost before she crosses the state line, they both realize their mistake. And to give them their due, it only takes a day for them to admit it to themselves and make tracks for each other. It's a good thing that Jade is such a planner, because once she decided to go back, she had to make her lists (instead of just jumping in the car or plane and going!) so she was thankfully still at home when Dell showed up. That could have been a fun little detour in the story.... Ah well. I liked that they both made the decision to reach out to the other even though he got to her first.
This was a satisfying HEA. No surprises, lots of cute animal antics and definitely one yummy hero!

Review: Plunkett and O'Nelligan have been hired to investigate the murder of a medium. Not only do they have to figure out what really happened, Mr. Plunkett has to pretend that he himself is a medium who has been contaked by the departed to help cross over to the next life.
I found it rather enjoyable, set in the 50s. A tad predictable but not taking away from my liking it.
