I’m looking for a story which is set in the highlands and the heroine (Alison?) is protecting a young child who she believes is called willy but is actually called lily. The child had been kidnapped from her home. Lily’s father comes in the middle of the night and rescued her.
The heroine had been married a few times before and is married at the time to blackthorn(?) the man had it written in the contract that if she didn’t have a child in a year then the marriage will be annulled. Blackthorn is a horrible person and has beaten her. The heroine’s father (hulme?) had married her to multiple men that were suspected to be traitors to either David or Richard. The heroine carries a box around with her with a letter written by the Scottish king (something to do with things that she did giving info about her previous husbands and the traitors within their families).
Much later on lily’s Father (who the heroine is staying with after the marriage to blackthorn is annulled) wants to marry the heroine but his council is against it believing that she is barren. Somehow in the end they are able to get married.
Edit: something else that just came to mind. There are these men that are working for the king and are essentially spies, they are called shadow men and have a phrase that is used to let the heroine know that they are the King’s men. There is one that is with them at the keep (with the bad people) he was going to help get the child away when the heroine is kicked out but discovers that she has already been rescued. This same man tries to kidnap her later on to try to get her to marry another suspected traitor on her father’s orders.
