Sloane Burbank is battling her own demons. Injured in the line of duty, she had left the FBI and is struggling to heal both physical and emotional wounds. Working as an independent consultant, she is drawn into a missing person’s case involving an old childhood friend. This case renews her contact with her ex-lover Derek Parker, a current FBI agent. As the case takes surprising twists and turns, Sloane faces both a clever kidnapper and the fact that the fact that the chemistry between her and Derek is as strong as ever. While more women are kidnapped, it is increasingly apparent that Sloane, herself, has become the ultimate target of the kidnapper.
Andrea Kane’s newest mystery/romance novel has plenty of twists and turns. The story provides a wealth of background information on the resources used by the FBI. This is a fast paced novel, that gives insight into the minds of the not only the good guys, but the twisted mind of the bad guy as well. I felt the fear of the women held prisoner, Sloane’s frustration in trying to read the clues, and even a sympathy for the kidnapper and his warped logic. I especially liked that it kept me guessing who the actual kidnapper was until the very end. That makes this book a must read for every romantic mystery fan.
