This topic is open for discussion of Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.

Book Synopsis:
Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. It begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it.

In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction—at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful—and completely unforgettable.

Expect spoilers!

Sarah | 3273 comments I am only just getting started, but I already suspect Arthur is an amazing writer from the jump. I have also heard people say it is hard to believe this is a male author writing this female protagonist due to the authenticity I suppose - that is always another sign of a great.

Margaret (everlastinggrace) | 2360 comments I agree Sarah, I have read a few books written by a male that did a fantastic job. I just barely started as well and I love it. This is my second time to read it and the first time I think I skipped through it quite a bit, no idea why. I am listening to the audiobook version and I love it so far.

Sarah | 3273 comments Enjoy the audio. This may be a little slow going for me due to work and I gotta start another book soon - The Known World by Edward P. Jones (a Pulitzer) - for my face to face book club. But I am determined. This one has been a loooong time coming for me. I really love learning about new cultures and have a feeling I am about to learn a lot about the culture of the geisha.

I have that one on my tbr list and the Overdrive has both the kindle copy and the audio....but, I have to wait. I wished I was close enough to town to be part of a book club. I am right there with you, I love cultures and people, probably why we read a lot of the same books. :D
