is this one of the newer books? i have read ever shannara book that i know of yet this one i have not read.

I would suggest that this is the actual first book this guy wrote, repackaged to fit into an overarching mythology or story cycle he never imagined when he first wrote the book--much like the whole Star Wars "saga."

I read this one, when it came out, in junior high, and loved it, and read a couple of the sequels--Elfstones and . . . Song, maybe? Is that right? and then I lost the thread. Do the recent books hold up?

This is one of my favorite series. The following books are all good. Some of them drag slightly but still worth the read. I have a problem with series that keep dipping into the same character pools (children of the heros, etc) but that's how the magic works in this world so I quickly forgive him for it.
