SOLVED. A funny book about young priest? [s]

I've been looking for this book for the last 2 decades and I haven't had much luck.

Firstly, I need to emphasise that the book I'm looking for isn't Father, Bless Me or Fludd. It was a funny book about a young priest who had started out at a new parish. He encountered all kinds of characters in his parish and fell in love with a girl from the village (I'm not sure which types of priests are allowed to date). I'm 90% sure it was a European setting like England or Ireland. I think the young priest was taking over from an older priest who retired but the older priest didn't stick around, which is why I don't think it's Father, Bless Me. I read the first few pages of that book and it didn't ring a single bell. I can't remember in which time period it was set but it wasn't very modern and depicted a quaint village life.

I read this book back in 1998-1999 probably, it was part of the Reader's Digest Condensed Books if I remember correctly. I even went to research which book combinations were released in that time period without any luck. I might be wrong about the Reader's Digest thing since it has been 20 years.
