Hey gang,
How did everyone (who read it) feel about Master and Apprentice?
I'm not quite finished yet. I've been a slow reader this month. But I'd love to hear thoughts. Anyone not done with the book beware of SPOILERS!

this month we are reading Dooku: Lost Jedi, which is an audio experience and has been published as well. SO you can get it in either form.
Enjoy and as always Happy Reading!!!

Justin (jtefft) I thoroughly enjoyed Master and Apprentice. I like books from that era and thought Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were represented well. The story was interesting and at times exciting and you get to know some characters you hear from briefly in other books, such as Dooku: Jedi Lost (which by the way is outstanding). I’m hoping the upcoming Disney+ Obi-Wan series will spawn other Obi-Wan centric books. He’s a great character. The pairing of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon was one of Lucas’ better ideas IMO.

Justin (jtefft) Worth noting, I nearly exclusively listen to all my Star Wars books on Audible and the experience has enhanced the materials greatly for me. The voice actors are very good and the effects and music take the material to the next level.

N.E.C.C. | 60 comments I wanted to love this so much but i couldn't, i just couldn't.
Everything related to the Jesi was perfect, if you liked Qui-Gon Jinn before, you are going to love himafter reading this. I also loved his relationship with Obi-Wan,

The thing that made me not love this was eveything about Pijal, it was kinda boring, very slow. Rael Averross was the one character that i liked.

It was a good book for me and i liked it but i was expecting something extraordinary coming from Claudia Gray after all the books she wrote in this universe.

Chad (thecoolchad) | 4 comments I enjoyed this book, but I didn't love it. Some parts were a little slow... Rael was definitely an interesting character.

Dooku is so interested in the prophecy's in this book, but he doesn't have that interest in the movies. I understand the movies never really focused on his character so there was a lot of room for artistic license there...

I found the last few chapters to be much more engaging and entertaining the beginning and the middle. I have found that to be true with quite a few of the Star Wars books I have read recently. Some books (not this one) grab you from the start and never let go.

I also have a much greater appreciation for Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan as individuals, and as a pair than I did before.

Khurram (theirongeek) | 21 comments I have to say I preferred the original Master and Apprentice series. I liked most of this book, but I though the Jedi in general were presented extremely weak, I list count how many times they were captured and needed rescuing, and far too politically motivated.

I agree wholeheartedly!! I love them paired as Padawan and Master!! they are so often diametrically opposed, but they work so well together. And to dive into their relationship prior to what we see in Episode I, love that!! want more of it!
I also love that Claudia dives into the time frame when Qui-Gonn is offered the position on the council. To get a little behind his eyes in that moment. Really great!!!

I agree about expectations revolving around Claudia's writing!! Lost Star is DEEPLY my favorite new canon book!! THat one is so phenomenal! I wouldn't put this one close to the level of Lost Stars, but I like what she does with the relationship of Obi and Qui!
Also, agree about Rael, a very interesting character to add, especially with the Dooku connections.

Rob (rmdriskill) | 6 comments I thought the book was pretty good but not exceptional.

There are a wealth of unexplored events around this time period and I am always happy to read more about Dooku and Qui-Gon. I also thought it worked well as a pseudo-companion piece to Dooku: Jedi Lost which I read/listened to immediately after. Claudia Gray is great at developing new characters that feel unique and not just reskinned versions of existing characters. I hope we get more short stories about Rael and I found the pirates Pax and Rahara quite fascinating as well. She handles the "flawed character" dynamic expertly and I have generally enjoyed how she treats political intrigue in this and her previous works.

That being said, I think my main issue was that I was more looking forward to other books such as Alphabet Squadron, Black Spire, etc. I am certainly happy to have read it and very much look forward to Claudia Gray's next offerings, but I probably will not revisit this one any time soon.
