Penetrating, fearless, drama-filled, and passionate. On the Come Up is a composition to the genre of hip hop from one of the most impactful voices of a generation. It is an engaging story about fighting for your dreams, even when the odds are against you. This influential novel is about a sixteen-year-old African American young lady named Brianna, who has the drive to make it in the music business as a rapper. And throughout the novel, she faces many challenges and obstacles to make that dream a reality. One of the main challenges being that her family is approaching poverty, which makes her even more desperate to achieve stardom so she can be able to provide and move her family out of the hood. My expectations before reading this book were extremely high because I knew that Angie Thomas was an amazing author from her other book The Hate U Give. The book was more than what I expected it to be it was definitely a page-turner, there were many things about the main character that I could relate to which made me feel connected to her in a sense. If you liked The Hate U Give you will LOVE On the Come Up.
