Jonathan Dunsky (dunsky) Finished The Sins of the Fathers by Lawrence Block, narrated by Alan Sklar. Excellent, short crime novel. Crisp writing, realistic dialogue, a good, dark tale. This is the first in the Matt Scudder series. Onward to the second.

MissSusie | 2420 comments I am on a thriller kick so I decided to try Say You're Sorry by Michael Robotham narrated by, Sean Barrett this is a new to me author and narrator.

message 203: by Mejix (new)

Mejix | 112 comments I'm giving Inherent Vice by Pynchon a try. I like the tone of the novel but for some reason I am struggling to finish the first disk. Not a good sign. We'll see.

message 204: by Carole (new)

Carole I'm listening to Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King. Loving it!

message 205: by Scott S. (new)

Scott S. | 722 comments I had to give Ready Player One a second listen. Wil Wheaton is a fantastic narrator.

message 206: by Sandy (new)

Sandy I am about half through In the Kingdom of Ice by Hampton Side, read by Arthur Morey and am enjoying it - all the adventurers have personalities. I find I have to take a break however before it seems too much the same ... so I'm finishing Lemon Snickett's Series of Unfortunate Events, read by Tim Curry.

message 207: by Carol (new)

Carol | 75 comments I'm starting the second book in the Thursday Next series Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde. It's a quirky series, but I'm hooked! Finished Blue Labyrinth by Douglas Preston the newest in the Aloysious Pendergast series. It did not disappoint! The narrator of the series is Rene Aberjonois. I love his voice!

Good to know about the latest Pendergast. I may pick it up soon.

Thanks for reminding me of Lemony Snicket; read all of them in print so I really want to hear them read by Tim Curry; just downloaded from the library The Hostile Hospital - I need something short and fun! It will be next after I finish Rebecca

message 210: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 1721 comments I'm more than halfway through The Paying Guests. The narration is good but the book could have been half as long. It drags on in places.

Legion: Skin Deep"

I also pre-ordered it, but it wasn't in the Library and no longer in the pre-orders list. I did a search for Legion: Skin Deep and found I stil had the option to add it to my Cart--which meant I hadn't ordered it. No matter, really, I just put it in the Cart again and completed the purchase again and--Voila--it is now in my Library. Now if I can just find the time to listen... after the holidays with family, I hope.

message 212: by Nospin (new)

Nospin | 232 comments Listened to Deadly Gamble yesterday - first in the mystery series.
It was an enjoyable listen while driving and doing laundry. The narrator, Lynda Evans, is new to me but did a good job.

message 213: by Sue (new)

Sue | 240 comments I'm about 90% done with and completely enthralled by In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette. It's hard to believe it's non-fiction, especially towards the end. Just an incredible story. And, the narration is fantastic.

Yes and/or currently listening.

I called about this yesterday and got a decent CS rep; she understood - at least she said she did - why I was calling to report a pre-order of a free book that didn't get into my library after the release date. I have the audio, though we just put it into my cart and purchased it.

CatBookMom | 1082 comments Back to current listening:

And Four to Go is 4 short Nero Wolfe stories; the first two are Christmas and Easter themes, and Wolfe gets into trouble in both of them. Still have two more to hear

Started the multi-voice version of Dune; I apparently watched the 1984 movie too many times - it's kind of awful/over the top but I kept watching anyway - since I find myself visualizing the movie scenes of what I'm hearing.

I'm almost done with Grave Surprise and False Colours. As you can tell, I'm bouncing around, unable to settle into a genre or author.

Janice (jamasc) | 1183 comments I finished Mister Slaughter and really enjoyed it.

Next up is Ordinary Grace.

message 220: by Hunchback Jack (new)

Hunchback Jack | 545 comments I also had my preorder of Legion: Skin Deep disappear on me, but I just "bought" it when it became available. A little confusing, but no harm, no foul.

I finished Prince Lestat and am now listening to Revival. I'm liking it so far.

I thought about doing that, the keep-it-simple approach, but I wanted to let Audible know that there might be a glitch in their pre-order system.

Susanne (heysus74) | 193 comments carol, Jasper Fforde is one of my autobuy authors. Have you read any of his other books outside of the Thursday Next series? They're all quirky but great.

message 223: by Carol (new)

Carol | 75 comments No, I haven't read any other books by Jasper Fforde. He is so quirky and I will definitely try others. Any favorites?

message 224: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 2420 comments Just finished Say You're Sorry by Michael Robotham (narrated by,Seán Barrett this was a great thriller I will definitely be going back and listening to his other books great story and great narration.

message 225: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 23 comments Hi Everyone! :) I just finished listening to "Apple Tree Yard," by Louise Doughty. Narrated by, Juliet Stevenson. It is a really good thriller, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and the narrator was brilliant. Five star read, highly recommended.

Before that, I listened to the old classic,"Junky," by, William S. Burroughs. Narrated by, Andrew Garman. I had read the book years, but it was great to listen to the audiobook version. The narrator was really great. Another five star audiobook.

message 226: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pjaye) | 447 comments I just finished The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters.
It was quite light hearted and funny for the first 1/3 of the book and then it took a much darker turn with death/murder etc.
I enjoyed listening to it but didn't 'love' it - 3 stars from me. Narrated by Juliet Stevenson and she did a great job (just like in the post above!)

message 227: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2212 comments This weekend I finished Dad Is Fat as my lap-swimming listen. Well, close enough...I just gave up on it well into the book. It wasn't that good. Lots of tired parenting jokes.

My next lap swim book is Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls. We'll see if I snort in the water as I have with past David Sedaris books.

Trish (trishga) | 212 comments Carol/Bonadie wrote: "Just finished Shadow of Night. Enjoyed it, will probably give it 4/5 rating. Just started Gray Mountain. The "young girl" voice of the narrator is taking some gett..."

I too finished reading Gray Mountain. It is VERY similar to Grisham's classic novels, with one big excection. I'm going to try not to spoil anything, but if you like the trial portion of Grisham's novels, then this book is not for you.

I must say that I learned a good bit about the coal industry.

message 229: by Trish (new)

Trish (trishga) | 212 comments I just finished listening to The Escape and it doean't disappoint! I'm not sure if which I enjoyed more--the narration of Orlagh Cassidy and Ron McLarty or Baldacci's thrill seeking storyline. I think it's easy to write rote, programmed novels after so many best sellers, but Baldacci's stories are never like that. I'm giving it 4/5 stars.

I'm SO sorry to do (ask question unrelated to thread) this and feel free to thump me but I just have to ask. Kristie, how to you listen while swimming?! What device do you use?
If you already covered this bit of magic elsewhere, pls just point me to it and I won't clutter up this thread. Very curious.

message 231: by Sue (new)

Sue | 240 comments Sorry if this has been discussed before, but how on earth do you listen to audiobooks while swimming? Or, do you not literally mean lap swimming??

message 232: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2212 comments I literally mean lap swimming, and I listen with a waterproof MP3 player. (JLab is the brand, found it on Amazon.)

Under the "Top 5 Audiobook" category, there is a discussion about "recommendations for an audiobook for runners." In there I believe I talk some more about it.

This is my first book by Sarah Waters. I agree that the first 1/3 was light hearted, and it seemed to move along. The darker it gets, the more plodding the story seems. I have heard so many good things about this author. Is this usual for her? I WILL finish tonight. I want to be done.

I forgot about this one, Joy! I've read the first in the series, and loved it. I will get this one for a holiday read!

CatBookMom | 1082 comments Sadly, I didn't manage to finish anything at the last minute, though I wrapped up Grave Surprise on Saturday. Too many new ebooks and audiobooks to try out, not getting into any of them.
