Carol (carolfromnc) | 401 comments We have a cooking meetup tonight and are scurrying to buy ingredients and tag team cooking, but hopefully I can start my book this afternoon. I'm so LAZY today. and self-centered. I just want to read!

Kristie | 19138 comments Have fun with your cooking meetup, Carol. What are you making? Do you listen to audiobooks? Maybe you could listen while prepping?

message 53: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments I'm starting with The Fourth Monkey today. It has a number in the title and is 404 pages, so bonus points! Woot!

It’s a German beef stew. I don’t do audio while doing other tasks because I find I don’t remember anything of the book. My mind wanders. Such a shame, too. lol

My husband will do the lions’ share cod the work here really, I just can’t be a free-rider. Running errands now.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 401 comments By the way, apparently, CVS doesn’t understand the criticality of Topplers. This line is not moving at all. So bad I’m contemplating turning my engine off.

message 56: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I'm starting my first book now, The First Time I Said Goodbye. A bit of a late start but I had to finish another book first. If I do some ironing later on I'll start Paris, 7 A.M. too. Multitasking.

message 57: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Sounds delicious, Carol. That's too bad you can't do audio with other things. I love listening while driving/cleaning/painting. I can't do anything that requires any real brain power though. And no... it sounds like CVS is not understanding the importance here. lol

message 58: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments Stew sounds so good right now Carol. I can't follow a recipe and audio at the same but I love audio books for chopping up veggies and cleaning up. Have fun

Are you sure of that? I thought we could only use numbers that had to do with the title, pages, publication, pages, series #, stuff like that but not pertaining to the story itself.

message 61: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments The August will count, if most of the book is set in that month. Any number that you can link as long as it applies to the book and doesn't change. So, same month rules apply, as long as it's a 1-9 (Jan-Sept) month it fits.

We do need to keep in mind that we can't pull numbers apart though. I'm not sure where some of the numbers come from, but only the 3 in 1793 fits, because it's the last number of a year. Same with 4:50 from Paddington. The 4 counts, but not the 5 from 50. The same rule from audio length would apply. I'm going to repost this in the main discussion thread too.

I think it is correct. If the qualification used is constant it should be useable. I think I first noticed this when someone wanted to use "set during WW2".

Kristie what do you say?

message 63: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Our posts must have crossed, Almeta. Yes, the 8 works.

message 64: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Ohhh, thanks for the reminder, Kristie, that's good to know about 4:50 from Paddington!

Terrific! I missed the World War 2 post in the main thread. Sorry about that.

message 66: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments The 8 for Fever 1793 wont work. The story starts at the end of August but its been September for most of the book. I already had 9 from first publication date.

Oh, after all of that discussion! ah ah ah!

At least we understand the rule better.

Okay, I'll remove it from the sheet.

Not at all. I've slotted it for the number 9 in the first round.

We are looking for 4 and 8 for the second round.

message 72: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments Good morning team~ I'm enjoying my books.
Will finish Fever 1793 this morning. Only about a quarter through The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. It's good but the premise seems too contrived and nonsensical so far. Still I like the different POVs and mystery.

Kristie | 19138 comments I picked up Tunnel of Bones Tunnel of Bones (Cassidy Blake, #2) by Victoria Schwab and I will finish it today. It will work for 2, 3, 4, 5, 9. So, we got the 4 covered for next round. :)

Amanda | 1788 comments Ended up having the whole afternoon to read and finished Nine Perfect Strangers. Weird book.

So maybe I will be able to get another book in. Going to start Between Noon & Three: Romance, Law & the Outrage of Grace tonight, although I won't get much reading done tomorrow.

Kristie | 19138 comments Amanda wrote: "Ended up having the whole afternoon to read and finished Nine Perfect Strangers. Weird book."

I bought that one a while ago on Audible, but haven't gotten to it yet. It's not top of my list right now. I was told that audio may not be the best format and I noticed it hasn't had the best reviews. Sometimes weird isn't bad, but was it too weird?

It was ok, but not my favorite Moriarty book. It kinda felt like two stories mashed into one. Not a bad read, but not something I'd necessarily recommend, either.

message 78: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I finished my first book:

The First Time I Said Goodbye

number of pages: 303
pub date: 8/28/13
first published:
series:
if audio, add length:
fits numbers: 1,3,8
Points: 15

Okay, predictable romantic ending.

I also have The Ninth Hour started that would fit into round 2 for #8 if it isn't taken.

At this rate Round Two should be easily finished.

Enjoy your books today.

How's The Ninth Hour? I had it on my short list for next audio books for the toppler. I think I'm going to go with One for the Money instead but I'm still curious.

I've started combining audio+paperback of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. It's good but it's long. Hope to finish it today.

message 82: by Roz (last edited Oct 14, 2019 08:39AM) (new)

Roz | 4528 comments The jury's still out, Vicki. I'm only about 20% done, but it's short. The idea of combining audio and kindle would be a good way to get through it quicker. I have a pile of ironing calling me. So far, though, I'm intrigued.

One for the Money is quick. I've read almost all of the Stephanie Plum books. She always makes me laugh, and I love the grandmother. My favorite character in the series.

message 83: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments Almeta, I'm probably going to finish The Ninth Hour before I'm done with Paris, 7 A.M. so it may be better to move it up to the round 1. Paris, 7 A.M. works for #6 on round 2.

Okay. I switched them.

message 85: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments I'm enjoying the Stephanie Plum book so I guess I should look at the numbers.

One for the Money
Title - 1
Hardcover has 290 pages
First Published: 8/26/1994
my edition: 3/28/2001
Audio 8:33
Series #1
Some awards won/nominated in 1995

fits # 1,3,4,5,8

Amanda | 1788 comments I'm working on Between Noon & Three: Romance, Law & the Outrage of Grace. More time in my week to read than I thought, so I also started Just One Damned Thing After Another.

number of pages: 480
pub date: 9/12/2013
first published: 6/1/2013
series: 1

Roz | 4528 comments Well I managed to finish my second book, The Ninth Hour. Not a favorite. I'm about half way through listening to Paris, 7 A.M. and I hope I'll be done in time. I have the day off tomorrow so I'll work on it. I have another started - New Boy - that's short so I may be able to get it done.
