Anyyone has a idea for a name?

Jayme | 4518 comments Here are some pretty cheesy team names "Down For the Count" or "Count on Me" or "Make it Count"

Esther - let me know what you will need me to do. I am having surgery on Thursday, but will be home the same day and ready to go Saturday. Thanks for putting together the spread sheet.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Hi!!!

I also always like having the team number in the title. Maybe something like 'Countdown 2 ....'. We'd have to figure out what we're counting down to ;-)

Jayme | 4518 comments Good idea about team number in title: How about "Count On Team Two" or "Countdown Too Two" ?

message 10: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I like Count on Team Two!

message 11: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments What will be our strategy? You can read any book you want for this challenge and it will likely fit several of the 0-9 slots.

One option for the first few days is to read whatever and fit it into the set of 9 after reporting, and in the last 3 days or so see if there are any sets that are missing a number and try to fill those up.

The alternative is to start planning beforehand, and slot people into tasks as soon as they have chosen a book (but before they start reading it). In that way we have a sort of real time idea of what we still need.

I guess the latter might be easier for Esther, but either way there could be a bit of shuffling and puzzling involved.

Luckily for us, Esther is brilliant at this kind of thing!

message 12: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Oct 10, 2019 02:43PM) (new)

Jayme | 4518 comments I think maybe penciling in what we are planning on reading and then seeing what we need later in the week (your second option Peggy). I also changed what I originally was planning and focused on Peggy's idea of reading shorter books. Duh

So here are the three books I am planning on reading.

book: One Station Away
number of pages: 304
pub date: December 5th, 2017
fits numbers: 1, 4, 5, 7
number in title: Yes

book: Fahrenheit 451
number of pages: 249
pub date: June, 2013
1st pub: Oct 19th, 1953
fits numbers: 3, 6, 9
number in title: Yes

book: Ready Player One
number of pages: 374
pub date: June 5th, 2012
first pub: August 16th, 2011
fits numbers: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8
series: #1
number in title: Yes

message 13: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I had a quick look at my tbr and focused on short books (below 300 pages) that have a number in them. I found one: Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore.

I'd like to start with that one. I'll check the numbers it fits when I'm on my computer and can see which specific edition I have.

I'm away for the first toppler weekend so I'll commit to one book for now, but hope to get 2 done.

message 14: by Esther (last edited Oct 07, 2019 02:41PM) (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments how about a mix of both?
I know I always start with 2 books. One book and one audio. So I will start both on the 1st day. So I know I will fill 2 slots.

I say gopher away for a few days then on Thursday, Jayme and I can start filling the slots.

This will give us time to find any gaps.

what do you say?

You can always post ideas. Even if you select another title, your idea may be picked up by someone else.

Also, I like "Count on Team Two!" as well

Sounds good. I will be out of commission on Thursday, but can start helping slot in books later on Friday.

Ten Drugs: How Plants, Powders, and Pills Have Shaped the History of Medicine this looks really good. I'll be interested to know your take on it.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Surprisingly, I don't seem to own that many books with a number in the title. Or at least not relatively short ones. I found another one though which could work: The One-in-a-Million Boy

I'll write down all the details for the two books tomorrow.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments book: Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore
number of pages: 288 (based on hardcover)
pub date: Oct 2 2012
first published: Oct 2 2012
if series: #1
Awards in: 2012/2013
fits numbers: 1, 2, 3, 8
number in title: yes (waiting for Kristie)

The One-in-a-Million Boy
number of pages: 416 (based on hardcover)
pub date: April 5 2016
first published: April 5 2016
Award in: 2016
fits numbers: 1, 4, 5, 6
number in title: yes
Over 400 pages: yes

I'm surprised the hardcover page count is so high, as it seemed much shorter when I selected it as a possibility for the toppler.

I'll see how much time I have left, otherwise I think I have to go for a shorter book without a number in the title, which would probably be:

The Cellist of Sarajevo
number of pages: 235 (based on hardcover)
pub date: May 15 2008
first published: April 8 2008
Awards in: 2008/09/10
fits numbers: 4, 5, 8, 9
number in title: no

Jayme | 4518 comments I'd ask Krisitie, but I think it could be used because it's a separate number from a million. It's not "the million dollar boy."

Katrisa | 4460 comments Oooooo, I just saw that Ninth House just came out. I might have to swap something out for that one. Also, it is tagged as "New Adult" which is a category for the year long challenge that I have had a hard time finding anything that I wanted to read with new adult on the main page.

You can use toppler books in the year long challenge, right?

Ninth House
number of pages: 480

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I like the spreadsheet Esther! It's very easy to understand and very logically organized.

One thing though: if you use my book for #8, it would be based on page count and not pub month.

Jayme | 4518 comments Hi Esther - I ended up getting a different edition for Ready Player One, so the numbers should be updated to 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 - still fits #4 where you have it, but in case we need to move it around :) Everything else looks good, and the spreadsheet is great!

perfect. I expect some numbers may be added anyway while we are reading our books. So these numbers will have to be updated then anyway....

Something tells me that some books will move around so much that they may get seasick. :)

Jayme | 4518 comments Hey just an FYI - I was over at the "Time for Count" thread and an interesting tidbit came up for book choice:

If a book won an award, you can also use the year that the award was won - every little number helps.

A couple of my books won several awards, so as I read them I will update the numbers if need be.

message 40: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments yes. there is a lot possible number connection. One of the book i looked at had 8 chapters according to the library pages... while such low number is unlikely, the book may be divided into parts. there are plenty of possibilities...

message 41: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh, that might come in handy!

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore was nominated for (would that count to?) or won several awards in 2012 and 2013.

Esther, you could add the 3 in the spreadsheet :)

Nice ideas! We have to think outside the box :)

Perhaps also year (or month) the book is set in, age of the MC, number on the cover..

Even with the suggestions given by Kristie there are several options for each book, but these additional ones might be very useful when we have to fill up slots in the end.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ah, Jenn posted in the sign-up thread that she can only participate in the second half of the week, so that might be why she hasn't checked in yet.

If she does read something this weekend we can always slot it in afterwards, and I sent her the link to our thread.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm looking forward to this toppler! Mostly because it gives me an excuse to put away my current book which must be one of the slowest books I've ever read..

message 47: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments I'm going nuts because I finished the audio books I was listening to and was having to grocery shop with NO BOOKS! I didn't want to start anything new since it wouldn't count for the toppler - grocery shopping sucks without books! :)

Anyway - I will start tomorrow with The Fifth Doll so you can put it into either 5 or 7 slot.

Then I will plan on the 100-year old man and Ten Drugs

Jenn | 3029 comments I'm very sorry for being so late to the party. :(

I am thinking that I could maybe tackle:
12 Strong: The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers
Pub date: Dec 7, 2012
First pub: May 5, 2009
Fits # 2, 5, 7, 9
Number in title: Yes

Which would fill the #7 slot nicely . . .

first published: October 8, 2019
series: #13
