Baba starts to notice Amir, they start going to movies, out to eat, and even let Amir enter into the smoky study. "...smile played on my father's lips. He opened his arms. I put the kite down and walked into his thick hairy arms." Which is a big change from having Baba pretty much ignore Amir and praising Hassan.
