ABANDONED. YA about a child with leukemia

I remember reading this in around 1999. It's a young adult book about a child (not sure which gender) with leukemia. It involves a little boy called Hamish and I'm sure it has some reference to rainbows in it.

I've tried so hard to find this with absolutely no luck! Please help!

I'd check Lurlene McDaniels books first. She wrote so many of those, that's always my first instinct.
