I normally only read a book once but I remember this as being one of my favorites. I may just have to give this one a second read.
Finished the book. There was an afterword in the copy I read that kind of explains the way this book went. According to the afterword, this is supposed to be a mashup of a standard horror story and a screwball comedy. That needs thinking about.

But as he drives his new purchase home on a balmy California day, he is suddenly seized by a teeth-chattering chill and the feeling that he is being followed by something sinister.
