Amy Ratcliffe (amy_geek) | 120 comments Let's get this Dune read-along started! We're going to read in small bites so we have plenty of time to digest and enjoy. I promise the chewing comparison ends now.

From October 1-31, we're going to read the first half of Book I, and yes, Book I is also called Dune. If you have the Dune: Deluxe Edition from Penguin Random House (out October 1), it's page numbers 3-119.
Edit: See the comments below for page numbers for other versions.

If you don't have that specific copy, stop reading after this sentence: “And he recalled the old woman’s warning: '...for the father, nothing.'”
Edit: Look for those specific words as this phrase appears earlier, but the sentence is a bit different. :)

Read the assignment all at once, divide it into four chunks for weekly reading--whatever works best for you. I'll be posting discussion questions once a week; I'll also start a monthly post for our favorite quotes from each section. I'll be sharing random thoughts as I read and dropping into discussions, too. You don't have to wait for me though! Post any questions you have for the group, debate which on-screen adaptation is the best, talk about the upcoming film from Legendary, show off your Dune cosplay. You get the idea. I look forward to seeing you all on Arrakis.

Caleb J. Pecue (cpecue) | 4 comments I know I will forge ahead of this pace because I just read/listened to the first chapter of Dune, and it was very captivating. If you are someone who enjoys audiobooks, this one is very good. There is a whole cast of characters (one for each voice). It almost seems like a movie.

Mayumi (mayumim) | 3 comments May I add the pages of my edition of Dune to this? On the Penguin Galaxy's edition the pages are 3 to 123.

Ashley (ashdolenz) | 14 comments I am reading the Kindle copy of the book and the phrase above lands on page 67. Does that seem accurate? I see there are about 320 pages in Book One. Just making sure I am stopping at the right place. Thanks!

That is more than likely correct. It is the last sentence in a "chapter". So, if it follows by a quotation from the Manual of Maud'Dib, then yes.

I am really looking forward to listening to the audio book!

Part of this phrase shows up a couple of times. Looks like on my Kindle version it's page 157. :)

Caleb J. Pecue (cpecue) | 4 comments yes it does show up more than once, but the one we are looking at is the end of a chapter.

Caleb J. Pecue (cpecue) | 4 comments @Amy, also since I am farther into the audiobook, I do have some issues with it. For some reason not every chapter is acted out by the other voice artists. So sometimes we get their interpretations, and other times we get the narrator's interpretation of the characters' voices. It seems odd; however, I am still very much enjoying it.

Glenn (in_a_bunker) Been 20 or more years...looking forward to revisiting it and some good discussions.

Brian | 2 comments i just finished October's reading and have pressed forward. this is my first time reading this and haven't seen the movie, so I'm fresh to the story. the politics and intrigues feel like a lot to keep up with, but i can easily imagine that there is a great deal of richness to enjoy there on a reread. i am tentatively planning on finishing the book by the end of the month, but will keep an eye on these boards to see what discussions are taking place around it. really enjoying the book so far!

Ashley (ashdolenz) | 14 comments I figured it out then, I was confused that the phrase was mentioned a few times. Thank you Caleb and Amy! I should have known it would end a chapter, duh!

Haha, all good! I think in future months I can check a couple other of my editions and share those pages too. :D

I'm glad you're enjoying it so much that you're powering ahead. Something I rather like about Dune is how Herbert just kind of throws you in and you learn about all the factions and characters just by diving in and turning pages. I keep discovering new details or new things to obsess over in rereads.

I'd imagine that's *slightly* different. (I am too scared to read The Shining).

I haven't read it since high school. It was way creepier than I remembered.
