Angelo (anjerosan) Hi guys, I had a chance to buy a box set and I liked the idea of a new cover art for the whole series and it has this collectibles-y feel.

I'm wondering if there's any one here who prefers box sets? What's the benefit/s? Would you rather buy the series as single purchase or wait for a boxed set?

Cee | 37 comments I love box sets, especially if I know beforehand that I'll love the books. Usually after reading a few books in a series from the library/on ebook, and it's a favourite, I'll buy the box if there is one. It's so nice to have all matching covers.

Lisa I agree about the matching covers. If I'm going to have a set I want them to all be matched. The only problem is if the author releases another book in the series, haha. I have bought some boxed sets from kobo. But recently I've found that they aren't doing them as much and the ones they are doing rate at about $0.99aud, which the quality is really bad.

Lina Al-Midfa | 81 comments I like box sets too, makes the book shelf look nice.

My favourite one so far, from the ones I own, is Philip Pullman 's His Dark Materials: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife And The Amber Spyglass.

I don't own this specific box set, but yeah it looks nice on my shelf.

And how can I forget, J.R.R. Tolkien 's Lord of the Rings. There's this set which includes The Hobbit as well, with the most beautiful art illustrations I've ever seen.

I also bought A Song of Ice & Fire box set, (even though I had them before they set them in a box individually) but it pales in comparison to the others. I wish they would change the art guy.

So true- aren't they awful?

I love box sets for my favorite series- but more often I end up with a mishmash of different copies due to buying the next book as soon as it comes out. Luckily, one of my favorite fantasy authors, Robin McKinley, had a lot of her books (even those not in the same series) designed the same way- I think it was actually the publisher that made all their books the same, but they looked so nice on my shelf.

So yeah, I prefer box sets over collecting one at a time, if I have the funds to make a purchase and if I really enjoyed the books.

They are awful! I bought one set (this was when ADWD came out) and then they re-released this other set which only changed the "colours" of the books. Like AGOT was always orange, now somehow it's blue?! (or was it green?) And unfortunately, I don't like the ones where characters of the TV show are on the cover. I find them so tacky, (no judgements just saying). This is one of my favourite illustrations Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders, #1) by Robin Hobb , but unfortunately no box sets.

L.G. Estrella | 138 comments I like box sets in general, but some of them can be pretty atrocious. I really dislike it when they change the cover art for no reason (especially if the cover art was actually good). I also prefer it if the box sets are complete (i.e., the series is finished). It kind of bugs me if I have a series of books with covers that don't match.

.. it's more fun when you give examples =)

For Robin Hobb, although not a box set (where I'm from there hasn't been any) they changed the illustrator/artist from John Howe to Jackie Morris. I have both editions, but I prefer Howe's illustrations just a little bit more. Not sure why they changed him.

Sorry for the troubles. Didn't mean to post in the wrong place.

To All:
What about a complete series without a box set yet? There is already a box set for the series though but have hard covers and cost more than twice with the paperback (and I'm not rich).

I really liked the box set for that series but I also have this urge to buy the series because I really want to start reading it so I'm a bit torn between waiting for the box set (paperback) and buying it.

Sydney Chapters (SydneyChapters) I love box set because they're cheaper than buying each one individually and they keep the books in good condition (even paperbacks), the books last longer and keep their shape.
