Side note .... I Love Ollie’s Dad.

Thank you! It's a very fast read that for a middle grade book is surprisingly creepy. I will just say scarecrows and let you discover the rest for yourself. :)
I'm so glad you liked this little gem of a book. I was, again, surprised at how much it actually creeped me out! Scarecrows!
Seeing Ollie's growth through the book was amazing. In the beginning she struggles with the loss of her mother and wanting to separate herself from others and by the end she has her own little Scooby Doo Mystery gang.
Arden does a great job creating a very spooky atmosphere and telling a pretty multilayered story about how choices from the past can affect the present in disastrous ways and how refusing to move forward is a detriment to yourself and everyone around you.
And yes, Ollie's dad is the best!

I thought it would be fun to really switch things up for the spooky season and do something we haven't done before, read a children's book. October's Online Book Club pick is going to be Small Spaces by Katherine Arden, the same author who wrote the adult fantasy The Bear and the Nightingale.
Small Spaces is about 11 year old Ollie who discovers a book with a chilling plot line about a girl named Beth who might have made a deal with the devil.
I hope you all will enjoy this change of pace and this lovely ghost story for the spookiest month! Happy reading!
