ABANDONED. Fiction about a girl, a thread, and creatures that can't go into the light

Book about a girl in a big mansion, if I remember correctly. There were monsters who could not go into the light. There was an old woman that only the girl has met who was weaving a thread to protect the girl and lead her to safety should she ever get lost. The old woman instructed the girl to put one end of the thread under her pillow. The girl found herself in the underground place where the monsters reside and found and rescued, or attempted to rescue I can't remember for sure, a man that the monsters had taken. She uses the thread to find her way back to safety

I would guess either children's or teen. It was a chapter book. I was in middle school, so around the early 2000s, between 2000 and 2003.
