Booknblues | 12158 comments Now I know how inventive are administrators are so I am going to be a bit presumptuous and solicit ideas from our group for challenges.

My idea- we have heard so much recently about wide tags and narrow tags, so I propose that we gather members narrow tags, much like we did for the horizon tag and throw them into the hat and randomize one each month for us to read.

This could force us to expand our reading even farther.

There would have to be some parameters for what truly is a narrow tag.

I think it would be good if readers chose their favorite narrow tags and perhaps a limit was put on the number of tags each member could choose.

i would love to see other ideas.

I'm not sure how much the administrators will thank me.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments We always welcome ideas and suggestions, but do not promise to incorporate any of them. At the very least, they may inspire someone to craft a new personal challenge!

Based in my experience with crafting games and challenges (both successful ones and ones that failed spectacularly), I do not think your exact idea would lend itself well to a yearlong challenge for a number of reasons (if you want to discuss it further, feel free to send me a private message).

However, we are aware that there is a vocal minority of members who would like more specific tags so perhaps we can use that concept in a more comprehensive official PBT Challenge. We have done some one off things in the past involving less popular/more specific tags, so the admins can brainstorm behind the scenes to see if it is time to revive something similar.

It seems like your primary complaint is that there are not narrower tag options and that has been received and noted by the admins!

Amy | 12953 comments That’s actually a very interesting suggestion. That there could be a year-long challenge called the narrow tag. Where once a month 12 narrow tags are picked throughout the year. Whether or not it’s ever used, I have to say I was intrigued by the concept. Maybe in a future year?

It is not my complaint, but I've been reading it. I actually generally vote for wider tags, but thought it might be fun to try to incorporate the narrower tags into a challenge.

Also, I noticed that everyone is beginning to anticipate what our next challenge will be and thought we could throw out some ideas just for fun.

I've been thinking about it, but so far I haven't come up with any unwanted ideas.

I like it! Not a bad book title.

Hebah (quietdissident) | 675 comments Hmm. I like the idea of a secondary challenge that still has range in it, even if that range is narrower. Maybe a challenge to read the runner-up tag for an extra point?

One of the things I found surprising about the Trim the TBR challenge is that even though my list is populated with things I already wanted to read, something in me bristles at the idea that I "should" read a particular book in a particular month, particularly since I'm also a mood reader. Or I would miss an opportunity to pair a title with a particular month's theme because it was on the list and might be drawn in another month. (This is not a complaint about it, mind you--I voted for it!--but an observation about how this year's challenge hasn't worked for me, personally.)

Book outline. Main character has trouble taking control of their own life and takes the path that has been presented to them by parents, friends, teachers, bosses. Whatever. Their life is in shambles but does not feel responsible for it because they have lived the life everyone else has wanted for them. They struggle to take control and no longer want suggestions that will lead to future challenges.

Just brainstorming.

Amy | 12953 comments Jason I truly cannot wait to read the novel I know you have inside of you. Stay connected to PBT so we can all support you in this!

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11137 comments I was one of the people that mentioned broad vs narrow tags (in relation to people voting for the tag that was most likely to match their trim). But I don't mind broad tags at all, since every tag so far has served to make me stretch and look for better books.

When we voted on options for this year's challenges, there was one involving Non-fiction books that were linked in some way. I would have voted for it if it allowed for fiction and memoirs as well. I had some really rewarding months this year involving books that linked together in sometimes unexpected ways. Of course, the tags already help to achieve these connections.

We also had an option about the goodreads annual book awards. I might have voted on that one if the rules were a little more flexible (as I had read some already). I'm not fond of the GR awards though because they're done too early in the year and people vote on books they haven't read yet. I might like to explore other lists.

Last idea - I would love an activity in February that is similar to Fall Flurries. Valentine's Day, President's Day, and Black History month are the key themes that I would want to read about. Then, March is Women's History month.

NancyJ, February would work for Black History Month for US members, it's October for UK members.

It's a good idea, but it would depend on where you live - for example, no use to me as I'm in the UK. I have a similar problem with the Fall Flurries & thanksgiving - luckily I have the option of Guy Fawke's Night (Nov 5).

Don't you have Remembrance Day in Nov, as well? That's my Nov option. If I wanted to do Thanksgiving (Canadian), that would also be October.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

LibraryCin, yes we have Remembrance Day as well (Nov 11 - it's really bad that I'd forgotten that one, especially as Dad taught about that!)

Idit | 1028 comments I just wanted to chime in and mention that I thought the buddy reads were great this year. A chance to chat more about a book since when we review books most time there’s not much of a discussion

(That’s not a recommendation for anything. Just thought they were awesome. I specifically didn’t join most because I don’t often read current book but the Map of Salt and Stars one was great.

Would have loved doing a Toni Morison buddy read after she died but things just got too busy

I am thinking of Beloved for October Fall Flurries, as it contains a a ghost-would you have time and/or room in October for BR on it? No pressure, just thought I would let you know I may read it this month
