This thread is open to discuss Fates by C. Gockel.

Synopsis
The Leader Who Rules Chaos, Rules the Realms…

Two years ago Loki, God of Mischief and Chaos, destroyed a large chunk of Chicago’s financial district and then vanished into thin air. He still has not been found. Odin, ruler of the Nine Realms, is desperate. To find Loki, he sends his son Thor on a dangerous quest to consult the all-seeing Norns. But Thor needs humanity’s help...

Loki’s former lover, veterinarian Amy Lewis, is carrying all of Loki’s memories--but missing some of her own. Hoping to keep Loki from Odin’s machinations, she agrees to help Thor on his journey.

Bohdi Patel’s memory was wiped by Loki’s mischief. He thinks Amy and Thor are both crazy to want anything to do with Loki. But he needs to find his parents, and he’s been told the Norns will answer any question--for a price.

When Chaos is the goal, only one thing is certain: Amy and Bohdi are about to get into worlds of mischief.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments hey guys, i think i'm probably gonna start this tomorrow although there is always a chance i might decide to do a few chapters tonight

message 5: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I'm starting tonight - always better to start before you since you get thru them much quicker :)

message 6: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments haha #oops they are getting longer so i'm less likely to get through it all in one day, although i am hoping to do some cleaning tomorrow which is good for audio books ;)

Claudia | 435 comments I’m starting tomorrow.

message 8: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i'm a little over halfway through because apparently i am just Like That ™ but i just wanted to pop over and say that odin is the absolute wooooooorst and i had forgotten how much, but also bodhi is the best so it keeps my rage in check lol ❤

message 9: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments I’m only through chapter 5 so far. I just want to comment and ask so if she lost the baby anyway was there even a point to the pregnancy? Also did Steve really go to the hospital just to confiscate the remains of Amy’s baby for the government? Like dick move….

oh my god yes, I was thinking the same thing! I had already wondered about the relevance of the short but now it's just like why?! And HOW can they confiscate a fetus????? It has passed, so it's not like it would continue to hold any magic. And I don't see the hospital handing it over either. Unless it somehow comes into play later in the book, but I can't see what it would do. It was just so wrong on so many levels. And Steve never called Beatrice to come to the hospital knowing Amy was having the miscarriage. Steve lost major points with me...

You know I think I felt more indifferent towards Odin in prior books. Didn't like him, but didn't quite hate him either. Oh boy, now it's like What an asshole!

It's funny, can see little bits of Loki appearing in Bodhi. But find it hilarious that any time anyone lies about Loki, Bodhi sneezes. Allergies my butt!

message 12: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Got to Chpt 10 and one thing that I don't quite get, and it may tie into the purpose of the novella, is the gate/promethian wire/magical source thing.

So in the novella, Loki's sword & the promethian wire caused Amy to travel to the different universes. But if there is an actual gate in Loki's apartment, why do they need the magical source to travel to Nornheim? Like in the 1st book when Loki, Amy & Beatrice traveled to Elfheim they just went directly thru the gate. They didn't need anything else to guide them.

And Amy still has Loki's book which can guide them to gates so why doesn't she use it? Unless she never looked at it?

message 13: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i never really liked odin because i think it was clear from the beginning that he didn't really care about anyone but himself and was being really manipulative just to keep power but i don't think i hated him until we saw that he was the one who had the horse rape loki's previous incarnation. and then it just kind of goes downhill from there.

the whole baby thing is ...well, it does have plot relevance although i agree that it probably also could have been left out but that's really just because i don't like pregnancy/babies in books. and i agree what steve did was a major dick move. most of the time i think he's TRYING to do the right thing even if he misses a lot, but that was like ...come on steve, you KNOW that was wrong.

i'm not 100% sure about the gate thing. maybe it's just 'gates are only relevant to the plot when they need to be' lol. or i think sometimes they close permanently or that you can open like a 'one time' gate or something? so maybe the gate in loki's apartment was not permanent and maybe some gates in the book have moved or closed ...or maybe amy just hasn't read the whole thing lol that would be very her.

message 14: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i finished today and my audio even had the short story the slip added onto the end so that was nice! definitely interested to see how you guys feel about the direction the second half of the series is taking. like i said before, i was really mad when loki died in the 3rd book and i was almost like 'do i even want to keep reading?' but now i think i might like the 2nd half of the series even better than the first because you still get loki's pov with amy having flashbacks of his memories but you also get bodhi who i think is an awesome character AND i feel like amy becomes a bit more proactive when loki is gone. like with bodhi i think she speaks up more and also takes more of a lead in the planning, which i guess makes sense because loki was so old and her and bodhi are more on the same footing, but still i think it's nice.

also i was just planning on using this thread for the next book and then doing a new thread for the last book - and i think there's like an afterword novella as well - if that's okay with both of you?

and this has nothing to do with this series but i was watching the crow last night because that's just what i do when it's october and i started picturing cal dressed up as eric draven for halloween and now i'm just like 11/10 would recommend, wish there was a real fandom for that series so someone could draw it lol. i'm sure he'd complain about the makeup but at least he could just wear his own clothes. although i think the pants are technically leather so he'd probably have to borrow something from robin ;)

message 15: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments So far thru Chp 13 - they've been up against dragons, giant spiders, adze, and turtle like creatures. Geez, what's next?! What kind of world IS this???? ANd where the hell is Thor!

message 16: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Oh my, I could SO picture Cal as the Draven!!!!! It so fits! He might even like the makeup, it would spruce up his pasty white skin.

message 17: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments haha cal is so pale he wouldn't even need the white face paint, just the black for the lips and eyes XD

message 18: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Hahaha very true :D

message 19: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments I’m only halfway through this book but should finish it tomorrow. I’m with Cathy and like what is up with all these creatures and where is Thor? Also Odin is a great big bag of dicks and I hope he dies.

@Devann Cal as Draven would be awesome. I can totally picture it. I'm also good to use this thread for the next book.

message 20: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Hahaha Claudia! The only thing about Odin dying is that there still needs to a balance I'm thinking, so is it even possible? Or would he transform like Loki?

Oh yea, meant to say I'm good with continuing in this thread. The mods will be busy with thestart of TT.

Unfortunately I won't be able to read much tonight because I'm still working on Reports for our Partners Meeting tomorrow.

message 21: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments @Cathy Well the hope would be that he dies and the reincarnates as a decent human being. Because your right I don’t think he can die as being order he needs to be around to maintain the balance.

message 23: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i figured i would probably start reading the next one on monday when tower teams starts

message 24: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments SO I finished the book last night but I don’t know if I really have much to comment on.

Like I still hate Odin and hopes he dies in a fire. I’m also still not a fan of Amy. I love Bohdi.

Steve also seems to be being stalked by Freya who seems to be trying to lure him into a trap probably for Odin. Like that’s what I figured from all those women who kept popping up and trying to tempt him.

message 25: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i was about to come over and see if you guys had finished since i couldn't remember lol. i was hoping that this series would pick up for you guys once we got to this point but i guess 3 stars still means you're enjoying it well enough?

message 26: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments I am like super torn on this series. There are part that I really like and enjoy but then something will happen that like turns me off. It’s nothing that completely ruins the series but it does stop me from loving it. Like does that make sense? I figure it’s enough to keep me reading to the end but it’s not a series that I would read more than once.

message 27: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments yeah i have a lot of series like that so i get what you mean. like from what i'm seeing of both of your reactions you think it's interesting and it does some cool stuff with the mythology / isn't just a paint by numbers urban fantasy thing, but also you guys really don't like amy and i get that she's a huge part of the series so if you can get at least temporarily on board with the whole ~too good for this world. too pure~ thing then it's probably really hard to fully enjoy it lol. i thought she did come out of her shell a bit in this one but also it still makes me want to shake her whenever she literally can't kill things that are attacking them, although maybe i shouldn't be so quick to jump to violence as a solution when i am reading ;)

message 28: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments do you guys know what you want to try next? i know that continuing incryptid or starting dresden were both options we had thrown out before, although i'm open to other options too

message 29: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments I’m in for continuing Incryptid. I will need to listen to the second book though so we can continue with the third. OR is there another series you guys have been wanting to read?

message 30: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Okay, had a crazy busy 2 days prepping for and the having our partners meeting so I got so behind on my reading :( Then earlier the hubs and I remembered that the new season premiered for Peaky Blinders so binged the whole season. Finally finished though!

Amy doesn't get on mynerves nearly as much as in previous books. I was actually shocked that she did so well on the run with Bodhi. And I think I'd like them together.

Bodhi is growing on me. I was totally confused when they got to Asgard and Thor told Odin that Loki was in Hel. I thought maybe we're wrong? But then the Norns pretty much confirmed it so Thor has definitely gained a few points in my book keeping it from Odin. BUt I feel like Odin should know, after having spent lifetimes with Loki, who he is. How is it that no one but the Norns knew the truth?

SO now that Bodhi knows, wondering how this whole transformation thing works. Thor mentioned that Bodhi had "human magic", whatever that is. Can Amy give him the memories back somehow?

I didn't realize that was Freya! I kept getting her and Frigga confused because the names are so similar. Did know something weird was going on with all those women hitting on Steve like that though. And Steve really took a turn for the bad IMO. He seems a little full of himself now.

I'm in the same boat as you. Overall I like bits and parts and do find the story interesting enough to continue on.

message 34: by Cathy M. (last edited Oct 06, 2019 01:21AM) (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I'm down for whatever! I'll need to read the 2nd InCryptid as well, and am always down for Dresden.

message 35: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i'm just worried i won't like dresden and you both will and i will be like #oops lol. but i do want to at least read the first one so that i can know for sure since everyone and their mother recommends it. we could do other genres besides urban fantasy too. i'm honestly kind of getting a bit fed up with urban fantasy. seems like i drop most UF books i try after a few chapters because it's like they're all the exact same book.

message 36: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I'm actually afraid of that too! AND it's definitely one of those series that takes a few books to get good. The 1st one is not at all indicative of the rest of the series.

What are your fave genres? I should probably look up the series that we've mentioned before... Me, I'm mostly into Fantasy/Urban Fantasy but really do read anything (except for NF which I don't particularly like).

message 37: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Are you both ready to start Book 5? I was thinking about starting it tonight, at least a couple chapters, even though I'm completely engrossed in my other read right now. It's gotten so good I've been trying to sneak in pages here and there at work today :P

For epic fantasy series, the Riyria Revelations are really good! I read the 1st 2 during Wheel and reading the last now for TT.

message 38: by Claudia (last edited Oct 07, 2019 06:50PM) (new)

Claudia | 435 comments I totally tend to stick to Fantasy and Sci-Fi. I occasionally dabble in YA and romance but tend to get sick of it pretty easily.

I'm not much of a fan of the newer romance books as often the male protagonist is an abusive assh*le that is supposedly redeemable or suppose to be attractive despite his awful personality. I tend to stick to the more fluffy ones/fairytale retellings if I'm gonna read romance. I could actually rant for a while about how much I hate the turn the romance genre has taken.

I like reading thrillers and mysteries as well if there is anything in that genre you guys want to read.

message 39: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments I'll be starting book 5 tomorrow.

message 40: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i will probably start book 5 tomorrow. i still have a few hours to listen to on gideon the ninth but after that i'll be ready to go.

i was planning on reading My Life as a White Trash Zombie sometime this month if you guys wanted to try that series? i'm not usually much on zombies but it looks fun.

i also don't read a lot of non-fiction - and there aren't really a lot of non-fiction 'series' anyway - and really only like romance if it is M/M or F/F because like you said so much of the M/F romance genre now is just so outright abusive and i don't want to deal with it. although really even if i am reading a queer romance book i still like there to be an actual plot and JUST romance.

i do read some mysteries and thrillers but i find that much of that genre has a plot that starts with a woman being murdered which isn't always a dealbreaker but if it's like ~beautiful young women are being brutally murdered and this asshole cop has to figure out why~ then i'm just like dear god why lol.

message 41: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I'm not a huge fan of zombies either but did hear that series was pretty good (White Trash Zombie) so I'll be down for that. Another zombie series I heard was really good was Until the End of the World & Mordacious (I guess they're related) by Sarah Lyons Fleming.

Only made it to Chpt 4 so far & now I get it about the pregnancy/fetus thing. Gosh this must be so hard for you Devann! With the comments from me & Claudia & having no clue how everything eventually ties in :)

But backing up a little bit, at the end of the prologue, was that maybe Loki's son (he looked similar)? It was a little confusing with the running around but I thought Cindy, who initially was helping him, had hurt Steve. But it was Freya? And then Cindy just left Steve?

And I thought Odin wasn't trying to conquer Earth? Or was that a lie that Odin told Bodhi & Amy when they were in Asgard at the end of last book?

message 42: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments Yeah same even when I read romance I tend to want it to have plot.

Not really into Zombies either but My Life as a White Trash Zombie sound like it would be fun. I’m kind of reminded of IZombie with the morgue job. I’m unsure on reading the whole series but I would give the first book a try.

I sometimes read non-fiction but usually it’s like philosophy or like a memoir of someone who’s interesting. I read the occasional motivational self-help book as well but it’s rare.

message 43: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 435 comments I’ve read through chapter 10 of the book. I’m liking this one more as it seems to be tying things together that have been bugging me. I’m so happy that Amy found out about the fetus but man that was the worst way to find out.
Do they clone her baby girl? Cause that would be messed up.
Oh my god do I love Beatrice so much in this book she is hilarious. (view spoiler)
I kind of feel bad for Steve but also I kind of had a you had it coming moment. (view spoiler)

message 44: by Devann (last edited Oct 09, 2019 05:08AM) (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments haha you guys are always speculating about what is going to happen and im like UUGGHHH CAN'T TELL YOU EVEN IF YOU'RE RIGHT! so i'm just like [sits here quietly]. like before you were like 'is loki's family really dead? i don't think they're dead!' a bunch and i was like [JUMPING UP AND DOWN WITH MY MOUTH COVERED] gee i don't knoooow??? ;)

and usually when i read non fiction it's like books that have a lot of short biographies of people from history that you might not know about - women, poc, queer people etc - which are definitely interesting but probably not good for a buddy read.

i think i'm in chapter 8 or 9? not sure lol

agree that beatrice is awesome and i don't know why amy continues to be surprised when she always has multiple weapons on her lol. it's like girl your grandma is an action hero now you've just gotta get used to it ;) agree that the thing with nari is a bit weird

i went ahead and requested the thread for the last book for this coming monday and it's about twice as long as this one and there's a short novella afterward - not sure if that will be included in the audio or not - but i seem to remember it being one of those X number of years later things.

also if we decide to do white trash zombie it's got a pink cover so it works for tower teams ;) the until the end of the world book doesn't look too bad but from the summary i'm thinking it might be too much like ...mopey romance for me i guess? it's got a blue cover though so that's also good for towers!

Same, I'm enjoying this one more. It could also be that we're more familiar with the characters and Amy is not as goody goody as she was before and seems to have taken it down a notch.

I think you're right about the Odin, Loki, Hoenir thing. I didn't see it before but in this book, it seems more apparent. Especially after someone said that Hoenir and Loki find each other in each incarnation.

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Got thru Chpt 13 but wont be able to finish until tomorrow night.

I had a feeling in the last book that Prometheus was tied to Odin so another mystery put to bed.

And the serum that Amy is contagious right? How did Odin see that already when it seems to have only affected small animals? What right does he have to try to take amy because of it? He ain't boss here!

Beatrice as action hero granny is hilarious!

And yet another world to go to. Wonder what kind of bizarre creatures will be after them now!

Amy having Loki's memories is finally out. Awkward hahaha! Can't wait to see when people find out about Bodhi. And there has to be a way for Amy to give Bodhi Loki's memories.

message 49: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i think amy has definitely gotten more devious in this one - especially with the serum and making it contagious so the government will have trouble controlling it and not telling bodhi because she is trying to protect him etc

@Cathy odin thinks he's boss of literally everything even when he isn't so that's why he thinks he should control everything lol. he really is just the worst.

i think i'm around chapter 13 as well because i'm at the point where they're about to set out on their expedition too. i actually slowed down with this one due to a combination of listening to another book some yesterday and watching more TV than usual lol

So what was with the # of vials she made? She knew that the govt would come sniffing around and confiscate it so why did she make so many? Hoping it would be used or recreated? Amy is actually the worst when it comes to secrets, she was doing such a bad job trying to hide it. The goodness is just too innate in her - could just picture her getting all sweaty because of the guilt.

Me too. If it wasn't for Gideon, I would've finished this one already but I've gotten behind. I meant to read it daily according to the BOM schedule but :(
