SOLVED. Adult sci-fi/fantasy robot dragon and robot man go on a trip. [s]

There is a robot man and a robot dragon, and the person (wizard?) who created them has just died. They decide they can't stay all alone where they are forever (possibly a mountain? Or a tower on a mountain?) so they leave and go traveling through fantasy land. They may have some objective in mind, maybe a crystal city?

IIRC, most of the book is their journey, and the things that happen along the way like being attacked by a group of monsters (possibly clam-shaped, but I could have just imagined them that way).

The man robot is an older creation, and he doesn't have to sleep but his battery will wear out eventually. The dragon was just created, and he can recharge by sleeping at night.

I read this book in the US in the mid-90s, I think it was adult sci-fi/fantasy but it *could* have been YA.
