Christine (christine_may) | 20 comments Along with my challenge choices I want to read some non fiction related to Victorian authors and times.. I’ve chosen Brian Wilkes book:The Illustrated Brontёs Of Haworth Scenes And Characters From The Lives And Writings Of The Brontё Sisters|221028]. And I would like to readVictoria R. I.. There are so many more, but it’s unlikely I would ever be able to get them read in the month, though these will qualify for non fiction November reading.

I was thinking the same thing! I'd very much enjoy reading some non-fiction related to Victorian period, which is why I ordered "How to Be a Victorian" by Ruth Goodman. However, I don't think I'll manage to read it in October, so my plan is also to read it in November.
This illustrated book of Bronte sisters sounds interesting too.

I looked up 'How to be a Victorian' and bought it! I think I'll be fascinated. (Got the Kindle version which cost very little).

Christine (christine_may) | 20 comments I was browsing in my local library, which is very small, and limited in books, with barely anything on Victorian history but I came upon The Battered Body Beneath the Flagstones, and Other Victorian Scandals
I wasn't going to take it out until I read 'On November 1849, thirty thousand people stood outside a London prison in order to witness the execution of twenty eight year old former servant Maria Manning' (with her husband). It so shocked me that there were public hangings in Victorian England that I took the book home to find out more.
An unexpected addition to my list.

That sounds very interesting. Who was the author?

Jennie (moosecreekbooknook) | 20 comments Aside from my tbr, I'm going to participate in a read along of Bleak House. Also, despite wanting to wait until October 1st, I broke down and started reading Harry Heathcote of Gangoil by Anthony Trollope through my library's ebook app. They have very few Victorian novels so I was surprised to find this one, since I'm guessing it's not one of his more well known ones.

Jennie, make sure you check out Katie's videos of the serialized reading of Bleak House that she did. She also did videos on Our Mutual Friend. I really enjoyed them and plan to read Bleak House and follow her videos.

Natàsya A.J (bookishnajm) | 10 comments I found Villete & North And South in my community library. Currently reading N & S by Gaskell even though it is not part of my TBR. I might also read Wives And Daughters too in addition to my TBR.

Marisia Martin | 30 comments I am reading The Wicked Boy: The Mystery of a Victorian Child Murderer, by Kate Summerscale, about a criminal investigation in 1895.

Roz (irasobrietate) I received How to Be a Victorian and The Victorians as gifts years ago and still haven't read them yet, so I think I'm gonna try to at least start one of them this month. I also want to read Unmentionable: The Victorian Lady's Guide to Sex, Marriage, and Manners because it sounds not only highly informative but also absolutely hilarious. Ungovernable: The Victorian Parent's Guide to Raising Flawless Children, by the same author, sounds fascinating as well, especially considering my research interest in college was education, particularly moral education.

I definitely won't finish all of these this month, but I should be able to make a decent dent at least.

Lorna | 28 comments I highly recommend Sarah Chrisman's books - Victorian Secrets and This Victorian Life. Sarah became so engrossed in Victorian clothing and daily life that she gradually switched with her husband to living and dressing as Victorians every day. Her memoirs are a wonderful insight into not being afraid to live your dreams. She also dispells many stereotypes about daily Victorian life. She and her husband now live in the Port Townsend where she writes novellas based around the town in the 19th Century and incorporating details from her own daily experiences.
