Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read Samarkand by Amin Maalouf; translated from the French by Russell Harris.
A historical novel linking the two time frames of Omar Khayyam in 11th century Persia with an American in the early 20th century who goes on a quest to locate the original manuscript of the Rubaiyat. An interesting format and an engaging, educational read.

message 3919: by Belynda (new)

Belynda Thomas (belyndawilsonthomas) | 76 comments "Degenerate Regenerate" by Laura Lyndhurst
This is the sequel to "Fairy Tales Don't Come True."
If you are looking for good books to read check these out. I can't wait to read the last book in the trilogy "All That We Are Heir Too."
Author Laura Lyndhurst delves into difficult subjects like prostitution and criminality and she handles them very well. Showing us how good people can find them self in a quagmire by making one bad decision after another. If you are in a book club your club will have lots to talk about. If you read these books you will have lots to think about.

message 3930: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) Finished "A Dangerous Duet", a Victorian era mystery about a young woman who hopes to audition for the Royal Academy living with her Scotland Yard detective brother. An intrigue at the music hall where she plays (disguised as a man) to earn money for the RA tuition intersects with the crime ring her brother is investigating.
Well written, though I thought the ending was a bit of a let-down. But conveyed a good feel for Victorian London.

Spanning several decades beginning in the 1930s through the Viet Nam war and its aftermath, this sweeping family saga describes a family’s struggle to survive during times of war, famine, dislocation, and mayhem. The narrative unfolds in the alternating perspectives of a young girl and her grandmother.

message 3935: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Leigh | 13 comments I've just barely started "The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois" by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers, and it's extremely gripping even at the very beginning, because it has a very literate, literary and exciting "hook" almost right away. I've been entering contests and submitting poems and fiction for publications, though, and also writing a new novel, and so I've had to lay the book aside for a few days. I've got a few other things to read too, and will be posting on the lot as I finish them. Best, VLB

Take a sneak peek into what everyone is saying about this book

1. The book is a precise but detailed scaling of the torch-giving life of our beloved Prophet (PBUH) . It will be a perfect piece of writing for those who want to seek guidance in every aspect of life including social, moral, marital, spiritual or the life hereafter. Moreover the collection of number of relevant narrations with references in the book make it more authentic and bonafide.

2. This book is a sincere effort of the writer and everyone will find it worth reading not only because of the content and the prestigious topic but also for the writing style. Furthermore the hierarchical  manner is also appealing and attractive for the reader.

3. A carefully selected collection of narrations, an inspiring way of teaching valuable sunnah; and a fabulous commentary of writer, dipped in love of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).

message 3943: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder.

Wow! What an unusual and imaginative story. A stay-at-home mother of a demanding toddler turns into a dog. Or does she?
The story isn't for everyone because there are some graphic scenes of violence toward little, furry creatures. But it will resonate with women who have experienced de-selfing, internal conflicts, guilt, isolation, a stifling of their creativity, and society’s erroneous assumptions about their lives as stay-at-home mothers. I found it absolutely riveting.

message 3947: by Sly (new)

Sly Segreto (goodreadscomdrsly) | 6 comments Just finished my 20th or so Lawrence Sanders book, The Tangent Factor. The setting for this book is Africa, an atypical one for Sanders who usually stays close to home, the States. Certainly not one of my favorites but anything by this author is worth reading; essentially a war story that proposes the possibility of United African States under a single leader somewhat configured after our USA. Lots of fighting, some loving and Sanders usual exemplary character development, in this case a somewhat benevolent leader that wants to unite all of the continent. Worth reading if you're willing to suspend what you expect from a Sander's book. I have read many of his books several times but this won't be one of my repeat reads.
