I finished Jane Harper's "The Dry" this week - very atmospheric, a mystery set in a small, drought-ridden town in Australia. Almost done with a re-read of Peter Leithart's "Miniatures and Morals", an analysis (the best one, IMHO) of Jane Austen's novels. On to Carl Heifetz's "Sherlock Holmes: Through the Microscope", and will have to re-read "Pride and Prejudice" (again!) because it's our book club's classic pick.
I just finished July's People by Nadine Gordimer. It is about South Africa in the 1980's as apartheid begins to crumble. In order to survive, a white family has to escape to the village of their servant of 15 years. Gordimer explores the shift in the balance of power between the Smales family, and their servant, July. It is a short book, but it packs a heavy punch. My review

Read volume 3 of the Louise Cooper YA trilogy - Keepers Of Light and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2441657359.
Finished Slave Old Man by Patrick Chamoiseau. It's an unusual book about a slave escaping from a plantation in Martinique. He is chased into the rain forest by his master and a vicious dog. The rain forest assumes mythic proportions with strange happenings and hallucinations. The novel is more akin to lyric poetry than a straightforward narrative. I thought it was very well done and gave it 4 stars.

.I'm currently reading The Stormlight Archive #1: The Way of Kings. It's a wopping 1007 pages long, and there's supposed to be 9 books after it.
It's really interesting how the author sets up such a unique world and a wide range of characters, though I'm only about 100 pages in, so far.
If you have time, I highly recommend reading it!

My July 2018 book reviews post is up on my blog. So, if you want to see what I read last month - and what I thought of the books I read - you can check it out here: http://ziglernews.blogspot.com/2018/0...
Read our two book club picks - one was a "category" pick, anything written by an author local to our region, set in our region or about our region. I chose "The Fantastic Castle of Vineland: George Daynor and the Palace Depression" about an eccentric character who built an odd attraction in Vineland, NJ called "The Palace of Depression" out of junk. The other book club pick was the novel "The Winter Garden" - I was pretty much lukewarm to it. Much of the plot revolved around the siege of Leningrad; went on to read two better novels about that period in history that were, IMHO, were Debra Dean's "The Madonnas of Leningrad" and Helen Dunmore's "The Siege."
I'm about three-quarters through the 900-page tome The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman and am still loving it.
I finished Laurus by Evgenij Vodolazkin. It's an unusual book about a fictional 15thC Russian folk hero. The novel is a sort of blend of allegory, magical realism, and mysticism wrapped up in an atmosphere of fable and fairy tale. I enjoyed it.

Currently listening to The Good Samaritan, a really twisted thriller.
Finished Cassandra: A Novel and Four Essays by Christa Wolf. The novel is in the first-person point of view. The book includes four essays in which Wolf describes her trek through some of the ancient sites in Greece while her vision of Cassandra begins to take shape. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

A. J. Deschene wrote: "Just started Cinder from the Lunar Chronicles. It's so much better than I thought it'd be!"
That series gets better with each book. Hope you enjoy it!
Just starting The Silent Sister. So far so good!
I read Robert Low's The White Raven, his third book in the Oathsworn series about a band of Vikings. It's very well done and totally immerses the reader in the possible sights, sounds, and smells of the era. I recommend it for folks who like historical fiction. My review
