Stephen Taylor (stephentaylor) | 11 comments I tried to read this some years ago but had to give up. My Copy Editor is always telling me not to use "authors voice" but Dostoevsky has pages of it. I think these Russian writers saw themselves more as philosophers than novelists. Be interested to know what you think - should I have persevered with it?

Because every author has a voice, which effectively communicates a unique style. Good luck. This writing business is hard work at times.

Stephen Taylor (stephentaylor) | 11 comments No, I was referring to the Brothers Karamazov but I suspect that Crime and Punishment is just the same. As you say, good writing is about showing and not telling, but my Copy Editor is obsessed with telling the story through the characters and jumps on anything she considers authors voice. Thanks for the good luck message, by the way.
Which of your books would you recommend?

I love Russian authors. And yes - you hit the nail on the head. Philosophers first, writers second (close second). I particularly love Tolstoy, whose symbolism isn't vague, instead providing both a story and a treatise on whatever his subject matter is. For example, Anna Karenina is about marriage (a good one, a bad one, and a 'normal' one as he saw it - fascinating stuff)

Sorry, you got me going. :) Long story short (hah, no pun intended), yes, stick to it if that's your game. Even when those Russian authors waxed long (and boy did they), their story was still interesting, relate-able and rememberable. Sorry about spelling, long day...)

Dear InkBlottings
Thank you very much for the very sincere and exhaustive review of my book. I am glad that you enjoyed reading it inspite of not being a poetry lover.
I am truly grateful for your time and effort.

Regards
Mona

You're very welcome. Bringing a character to life honestly and wholly is like creating the Frankenstein monster at times! If I had to recommend one of my novels, it would be Shannon's Revenge, as it has received more critical acclaim. Thank you for asking, Stephen.

I found a lot to like in it, compared to some historical fiction with female heroines, though it is perhaps over long.

Karnesb (samrprod) | 4 comments Real Magic Ancient Wisdom, Modern Science, and a Guide to the Secret Power of the Universe by Dean Radin I'm midway through Dean Radin's "Real Magic: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Science, and a Guide to the Secret Power of the Universe." It is everything I expected, and more. Radin's reach is beyond than of mere scientist, he is a creative writer who brings the esoteric into practical form for all to understand. I highly recommend it.

message 1390: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. The setting is pre-Saxon England with mythical creatures, knights, pixies, good monks and bad monks, ogres, and a dragon. The area is surrounded by a mist that causes personal and collective memory loss. Against this backdrop, Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple, set off on a quest for find their son.
The novel is not really about pre-Saxon England. I think it is a meditation on memory--its efficacy, and the role it plays to foster or impede reconciliation on a personal and/or collective level.
An amazing novel.

message 1391: by Robert (new)

Robert Collins Earlier today I finished Curtsies & Conspiracies, the second book in Gail Carriger's Finishing School series. It was a rollicking good time. A good bit of action in the story. A character from the Parasol Protectorate series popped up, which was fun.

I'll get back to the series a bit later. For now, my plan is to read a longer novel next...

message 1392: by J. (new)
