What are you currently reading (or just finished)?
I tried to read this some years ago but had to give up. My Copy Editor is always telling me not to use "authors voice" but Dostoevsky has pages of it. I think these Russian writers saw themselves more as philosophers than novelists. Be interested to know what you think - should I have persevered with it?
One that's hard to shoehorn into any single category:
The Museum of Extraordinary Thingsmy review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I recently finished reading Ebba, the first Easter Hare (SPRING) by Leen Lefebre. I just posted a review on my blog: http://inkblottings.com/reader-review...

Catch-up:Read Gene Wolfe's The Fifth Head of Cerberus and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1414020222.
Then a "biography" which I wasn't keen on - 1963: A Slice of Bread and Jam: One boy’s year of adventure, crippling poverty, abuse and an encounter with The Moors Murderers by Tommy Rhattigan and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2352912628.
Just finished a refreshing change from "the 12th in the bestselling series":
Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore**** my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Stephen wrote: "I tried to read this some years ago but had to give up. My Copy Editor is always telling me not to use "authors voice" but Dostoevsky has pages of it. Because every author has a voice, which effectively communicates a unique style. Good luck. This writing business is hard work at times.
I recently finished reading Pandora's Succession by Russell Brooks. I just posted a review on my blog: http://inkblottings.com/reader-review...

I just finished reading the "Bookworm" series. I really like the way the suspense continued. I rated it very highly.
Finished Elmet by Fiona Mozley, a 2017 Man Booker Prize finalist. Although there were some flaws with its execution, I thought it was a haunting and compelling page turner. My review

No, I was referring to the Brothers Karamazov but I suspect that Crime and Punishment is just the same. As you say, good writing is about showing and not telling, but my Copy Editor is obsessed with telling the story through the characters and jumps on anything she considers authors voice. Thanks for the good luck message, by the way. Which of your books would you recommend?
Read Reflections in a Golden Eye by Carson McCullers. I gave it 3 stars. My review

Stephen wrote: "I tried to read this some years ago but had to give up. My Copy Editor is always telling me not to use "authors voice" but Dostoevsky has pages of it. I think these Russian writers saw themselves m..."I love Russian authors. And yes - you hit the nail on the head. Philosophers first, writers second (close second). I particularly love Tolstoy, whose symbolism isn't vague, instead providing both a story and a treatise on whatever his subject matter is. For example, Anna Karenina is about marriage (a good one, a bad one, and a 'normal' one as he saw it - fascinating stuff)
Sorry, you got me going. :) Long story short (hah, no pun intended), yes, stick to it if that's your game. Even when those Russian authors waxed long (and boy did they), their story was still interesting, relate-able and rememberable. Sorry about spelling, long day...)
I recently finished reading Unrequited: Poetry From The Hurting Heart by Mona Soorma. I just posted a review on my blog: http://inkblottings.com/reader-review...

Dear InkBlottings
Thank you very much for the very sincere and exhaustive review of my book. I am glad that you enjoyed reading it inspite of not being a poetry lover.
I am truly grateful for your time and effort.
Regards
Mona
Just finished Nora Roberts The Obsession https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... - fabulous book! Well written and she knows how to build up the sexual tension! It is about the life of the daughter of a serial killer and how she fights to come to terms with what her father did.
Another catchup:Finished a very enjoyable humour-horror read for Star Trek fans by Kevin Anderson - Night of the Living Trekkies - reviewed here - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2338197844.
Also read a John Gordon novel, The Ghosts Of Blacklode and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2358173551.

Bringing a character to life honestly and wholly is like creating the Frankenstein monster at times! If I had to recommend one of my novels, it would be Shannon's Revenge, as it has received more critical acclaim. Thank you for asking, Stephen.
I just finished reading Hunting Prince Dracula, so I will begin reading Of Beast and Beauty. I hope this will be exciting!!!
I recently finished reading When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon. I just posted a review on my blog: http://inkblottings.com/reader-review...

I just finished
The Weight of InkI found a lot to like in it, compared to some historical fiction with female heroines, though it is perhaps over long.

Lol, thanks XD
It's been highly recommended to me, but I'm not so sure I can expect a HEA! (tbf, though, I do love a good sobfest while reading) x
I'm midway through Dean Radin's "Real Magic: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Science, and a Guide to the Secret Power of the Universe." It is everything I expected, and more. Radin's reach is beyond than of mere scientist, he is a creative writer who brings the esoteric into practical form for all to understand. I highly recommend it.
I read The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. The setting is pre-Saxon England with mythical creatures, knights, pixies, good monks and bad monks, ogres, and a dragon. The area is surrounded by a mist that causes personal and collective memory loss. Against this backdrop, Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple, set off on a quest for find their son.The novel is not really about pre-Saxon England. I think it is a meditation on memory--its efficacy, and the role it plays to foster or impede reconciliation on a personal and/or collective level.
An amazing novel.

Earlier today I finished Curtsies & Conspiracies, the second book in Gail Carriger's Finishing School series. It was a rollicking good time. A good bit of action in the story. A character from the Parasol Protectorate series popped up, which was fun.I'll get back to the series a bit later. For now, my plan is to read a longer novel next...
Finished Minette Walters' "The Cellar" - suspense that migrates toward horror and pretty much unputdownable.
Read Pearls on a Branch: Arab Stories Told by Women in Lebanon Today by Najla Khoury, a collection of Arab folktales transmitted orally for many generations. My review

I love seeing what people read, because sometimes nothing on my 'to-read' list sounds like what I want at the moment.I just finished the Girl in the Blue Coat, a YA book about WWII
