Wayne Turmel (wayneturmel) | 91 comments Kings of the Wyld (The Band #1) by Nicholas Eames I just read and really loved Kings of the Wyld (Book One of "The Band"). it's a sword-and-sorcery-military fantasy but a really pleasant surprise. An unexpected amount of humorKings of the Wyld.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) | 165 comments I'm halfway through Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart by John Guy. A very interesting read - it's a biography of Mary, Queen of Scots, who is portrayed as an equal to Elizabeth I in wits and courage. I'm finding the final season of the TV series "Reign" is not that far off from historical facts.

J. (jdrew) | 153 comments About a third of the way through Monster Hunter International (Monster Hunter International, #1) by Larry Correia . I got a copy based on a friend's recommendation and knowing he's a non-stop action fan with lots of shootings, killings and mayhem kind of reader, I am not disappointed. True the beings getting killed are undead, vampires, werewolves and the like so not the same kind of death and destruction as some of the modern thrillers, but certainly this book is action packed.

Gail Gilmore | 4 comments Be Safe, I Love You. I thought it was excellent; great writing, and a topic that's important: the psychological toll of wars on those who fight them. I'm about to start Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich's The Fact of a Body.

I'm reading MAYFLOWER by Nathaniel Philbrick and eating it up—all the surprising details about our lauded Pilgrims. As an added bonus, it has reassured me about the history-writers crutch, the subjunctive voice to tell what MAY have happened or COULD have happened. I just finished a bit of history myself and was relieved to see how much Philbrick leaned on this form. The other big take-away from the book was his detailed characterization of the Puritan mind. Now I understand how these Christian men came to hang my many times great grandmother who was a law-abiding Quaker.

Lynda Dietz | 354 comments I just finished reading It Was the Best of Sentences, It Was the Worst of Sentences by June Casagrande, and it was pretty terrific. I reviewed it here.

I think writers and editors alike can benefit from it.

I'm currently reading Stephen King's On Writing right now as my non-fiction, and fiction for pleasure is currently on hold because I'm doing a final edit on the third and final installment of the Light Bringers Saga by Brandon Ax and prefer to focus when I'm in the middle of edits.

I love this thread! I get so many good "next book" reading ideas!

message 968: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments Finished Dreaming the Hound by Manda Scott. This is book 3 of the 4 book series about Boudica, the Celtic warrior who led the rebellion against the Roman invasion of Britannia. I gave it 4 stars. It was an exciting page-turner.

The series is historical fiction, but this book borders more on historical fantasy than historical fiction since the characters communicate with gods and with spirits of dead ancestors. I'm enjoying the series and intend to finish it. I hate starting something and not finishing it.

Groovy Lee The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince.

I'm not finished yet, but all I can say is, "Oh my goodness." How sad the way she weaved a love-story from that.

J. (jdrew) | 153 comments Just finished Monster Hunter International (Monster Hunter International, #1) by Larry Correia and must say it was a wild ride. All the action, killing and shooting anyone could want, might have been a tad more than I need.

Pam Baddeley | 683 comments Lexie wrote: "I love The Dark Is Rising sequence - I usually read The Dark is Rising in December, though it's too long since I read the others."

I read the first three I think years ago, well four counting Over Sea, Under Stone which is more like a prequel. Planning to read the whole lot in order this time though interspersed with other things as I'm two thirds through the Chaos Walking trilogy for one thing.

Speaking of which, read the short story by Patrick Ness, The Wide, Wide Sea, which fits after book 2 of his Chaos Walking trilogy, and reviewed it https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2041750455.

Jaci Miller | 133 comments Retribution Falls - Almost finished and loving it - will definitely continue on with the series!

message 983: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments Finished The Woman Who Read too Much by Bahíyyih Nakhjavání. It is about a 19thC Persian woman who used Islamic texts to defy the cultural restrictions placed on women. She was a fearless advocate for women's rights and women's literacy. Nakhjavani uses irony, humor, and satire to show the hypocrisy of those in positions of power.
I thought it was a great book. A beautiful story, beautifully told, of an amazing woman.

Lynda Dietz | 354 comments I finally read Cyrano de Bergerac! I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I saw a little farther up the list that someone mentioned the Dark is Rising series, and it makes me want to read it again. It's been at least 10 years since I went through them.

message 985: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 89 comments Just finished The Ghosts of Ardenthwaite Hall which was more satisfying than some in the series. The setting is interesting, a nascent industrial town in the 1830s/40s.

message 986: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I finished Baba Dunja's Last Love, a delightful, short novel by a German author, Alina Bronsky, translated into English by Tim Mohr.

It's a quick read with a wonderful portrayal of the delightful octogenarian, Baba Dunja--a feisty, fiercely determined woman who returns to live in her radioactive, abandoned village close to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. I thought she was beautiful and thoroughly enjoyed the novel.

J. (jdrew) | 153 comments I am in the middle of A Conspiracy of Faith (Department Q, #3) by Jussi Adler-Olsen which is another Department Q mystery, well to me not so much a mystery as a thriller since the reader knows all along who the killer is. Anyway, I liked the first book in this series so am trying another.
