SOLVED. Bleak Scandinavian Romance/Crime [s]

The book is about a cartographer (map maker) (i think) who goes on an expedition to chart a scandinavian archipelago (i think). he becomes besotted by a woman he meets on one of the islands who lives there alone with her husband but wants to return to the mainland. i think the "hero" kills the husband. the woman has a baby to him. he continually strings her along about leaving the island because he is married. in the end, i think he commits suicide and she leaves the island with the baby.

I think this might be Depths by Henning Mankell.

Good find, Lobstergirl! Side note: the basic theme reminds me of Eye of the Needle - one of Follett's *short* early novels.

Oh, I didn't find it. (I had actually read it.) It is very, very bleak. "Eye of the Needle" is a great story too.

I'm convinced Depths was the book (although I can't remember who gets killed/dies). Moving to Solved.
