Joanne I'm a bit behind only starting this book today but wanted to reply to some of the earlier posts.

I've probably read the first 4 books 10+ times each, because that was all that was released when I discovered the series. Waiting for the last 3 books to be released was torture. Also my parents disapproved of me reading them (although never outright banned them) so I had to wait and get them from the library!

I really like Hermione's character but I've never been a Ron fan. I always found him boring and annoying. Compared to Harry and Hermione, and all his brothers (especially Fred and George), I never warmed up to Ron. SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE SERIES (view spoiler)

I've always found the first couple of chapters of book one to be a bit slow, as well as all the Dursley scenes throughout the series. It was neat seeing all the name-dropping and references to things that come into play later in the books.

Joanne I'm about to start chapter four and I can't help myself. I have to post my favourite meme:

description

This one never fails to make me laugh

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I don't know if I agree that Hermione was a scaredy-cat. When they were being chased by Filtch and stuff she was the one that came up with a spell to unlock the door, and notice the trap door. If she was such a scaredy-cat I don't think she would have been able to pull that off.

Ron is kind of whiny but he was the last boy in the pack of Weasleys and I bet his twin brothers picked on him a lot.

Snowtulip | 4679 comments This will be my first re-read, although I've seen the movies a million times :D

The plan was to try them on audio this time around, but oddly enough there is a long hold line at the library, so kindle for me. I own the series in hardback.

Admit I'm a little nervous to start for many reasons already mentioned in the thread, primary being concern that I may not love the first book as much as I remember...

I think it's perfectly normal for her to be scared. Who wouldn't be scared with some of the stuff happening? The main thing is you do the thing, even if you're scared. You deal with it. That's bravery, which is why she belongs in Gryffindor in my opinion.

Michelle (govmarley) | 3150 comments I feel the same way about Ron and the chess match. He was scared, but still brave.

message 557: by Dev (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments yeah and that's a big point with this book in particular too i think, what with neville towards the end as well.

not that i necessarily think not being brave is the worst thing in the world anyway. i wouldn't call myself particularly brave or scared [just somewhere in the middle i guess] but overall gryffindor is definitely the house i relate to the least.

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 1142 comments Chapter 13:

Nicholas Flamel

I couldn't remember how they found him then it all came flooding back as I started reading.

I did think that they made Hermoine extra annoying in this first book, but I think it was all apart of the reason why/how she, Harry and Ron became friends.

Silje (sikna) | 1444 comments I started listening to the audio today (Stephen Fry version) and realized this is probably the first time experiencing the book in English! The first book came out when I was seven, so I didn't read it until later and in Norwegian. I changed to English on the third book I think. Also, I sort of grew up with the movies, since at the beginning I was eleven when the first movie came and therefore the same age as Harry:P

I've gotten as far as the sorting hat.

SandyL | 4747 comments I listened to the audiobooks of some of the series many years ago, and read this first book in the series just under a year ago. I remember when they came out I couldn't understand how people other than kids were so into a book about a 10 year old kid! Then, when I was doing a lot of driving someone lent me the audiobooks and, wow!, I got it! So much imagination in these books.

Just started chapter 2, and in chapter 1 I noticed the line that Ashlee (msg 560 above) quoted - how true! I wonder if Ms Rowling knew how big her creation would become?

Hi Shannon !
they are really nice and each house edition have additional information about the house, their founders and notable wizards and witched from the house. You also have a little quiz at the end. it's really nice. Plus, the hardcovers are just gorgeous !

You might have to wait a while to have a whole ravenclaw box set. book two is only released this summer.

Do you mean of the Anniversary set? I didn't realize they were planning to come out with house specific editions of all the books. wow. Otherwise there has been previous house-specific box sets out there, e.g. the trunk sets:

Yeah, I guess not. When I try to explain that to my kids they look at me like I've got three heads. :)

Joanne It's funny to remember that back then there were several search engines, Yahoo, Altavista, etc. Now Google has becomes so popular its used as the generic word to search.

ah, yes. I've seen them a few times on instagram. But, indeed, I was talking about the official 20th anniversary editions. They only released the first one so far, and the second comes out in the summer. The ones you thought of, however, are custom made. They are really beautiful !

The main colours of the books (house colour or black) will swap with each book as it's released.

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 1142 comments So, I'm listening to the Jim Dale audio and I'm kind of getting narrator envy. I can only get the Jim Dale audio here, but the UK people can get the Stephen Fry one.

Why are we so restricted? It's not fair. I think we should be able to choose for ourselves which one we like best! I'm not sure which one I would pick because I've never heard the Stephen Fry one but I've liked him narrating other books, so now I'm very interested in hearing his version.

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments @Claire I just feel like SO MUCH of the trouble in this series could have been avoided if there wasn't a system set up that decided that 1/4th of all children are 'evil' when they are eleven years old lol

ClaireB | 4269 comments Devann wrote: "@Claire I just feel like SO MUCH of the trouble in this series could have been avoided if there wasn't a system set up that decided that 1/4th of all children are 'evil' when they are eleven years ..."

true, true. That's a critique I've made in the past, too. it's really a discriminating system they've got in Hogwarts. I know they present the house in the brightest light possible when doing the sorting, but there is so much stigma attached to slytherins... that's just sad. Also, the system only breads competition. and too much competition can be very damaging. especially at that age.

message 599: by Rosina (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rosina | 1800 comments I finished!...I quite enjoyed this. The last half moved quite fast. What was my favorite part? I was surprised by the forest and cant wait to see how that will tie in on future books. I liked how in the last part what they were learning at school was really put to the test and that was almost like that should have been the final exam.

message 600: by Dev (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments @Claire yeah I was actually thinking on this reread [as well as in the past] whether all the house competition is really a good idea / completely fair. I mean to me the points system seems totally unfair because professors can just give points to their own house for almost no reason and take points away from other houses unfairly [as we've seen on SEVERAL occasions]. Quidditch is okay because I mean at least there's a concrete set of rules and I feel like with sports competition is a given, but there is literally no rhyme or reason to the house cup.
