This topic is open for discussion of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
descriptiondescription

Book Synopsis:
Harry Potter has never played a sport while flying on a broomstick. He's never worn a Cloak of Invisibility, befriended a giant, or helped hatch a dragon. All Harry knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley. Harry's room is a tiny cupboard under the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in ten years.

But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to a wonderful place he never dreamed existed. There he finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic around every corner, but a great destiny that's been waiting for him... if Harry can survive the encounter.

Expect SPOILERS. Use spoiler formatting in comments!

Anita Reads | 1677 comments Is this going to be a buddy read of the whole series. I might be tempted to join, I haven't read Harry Potter in a while, and I miss that world. Let me know if you plan on reading all 7 eventually during a BR and I'm game. I'll have to borrow the first one from my sister though.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments I'll reread this! I've only read a few dozen times...

Kristie | 3596 comments I just bought a new set of HP books that, when placed side by side, form a picture of a castle. I also picked up an audio of the first one for an audio challenge. I definitely want to do a re-read, but I'm not sure I'll have time when you start because I signed up for so many BRs and BOMs in November. I may jump in the discussion later.

I'll do it with you! I've reread the last one a lot, but never any of the others, so it will be fun to do the whole series again- like I'm reading them for the first time and get to talk to people about them :)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I've only read the 6th and 7th book more than once, but yes would love go through the whole journey once again.
I need to get the box set soon. So far I only have 2,3 and 4. The rest I've usually borrowed from my dad or siblings.

This was always my favorite fantasy series until I read Wheel of Time.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I haven't read wheel of time. I'll check it out.
J.K Rowling is the reason I started reading for real. I owe her a great deal:) I started with the 6th book I was so annoyed that everyone around me knew what was happening in HP, but me. So that was the first time I ever said. Ok I'll read that, without it being part of homework. That was not even 10 years ago and now I read about 100+ books pr year. It's really strange to think about.

Wow that is so cool! I think we all had that book that got us into reading. When I was in the third grade, I read the Little House on the Prairie series and realized I loved reading more than anything else.

Kristie | 3596 comments Funny...I just assumed that everyone would want to continue on with the series on this one. I haven't read Wheel of Time either. I'll have to check it out.

That's awesome!

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I know. The only sad thing about HP is that I'll never get to experience it for the first time again. The whole emotional rollercoaster I got in those last books in regards to Snape was amazing.

I agree. Part of the fun of reading HP was the build up for the next books and discussing the possibilities of what could happen with other people.
I've read all of JKR's books ; I think she is fabulous. One of the best writers of our time

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I haven't read The Casual Vacancy yet, but I have it on my TBR list. I've just seen so many bad reviews that I'm scared to be hugely disappointed when I eventually read it.

It is a hard book to read, but I liked it because the writing is incredibly good and it is a book that makes you think. Even now, my mind returns to it whenever I come across someone that has a "not in my backyard" mentality (or I find myself thinking that way). The book really shines a spotlight on society and urban areas and I think that makes a lot of people uncomfortable

Anita Reads | 1677 comments That's great. I know I'll get around to read it eventually, it's just so difficult to decide between all the books I want to read. I have over 2000 books on my TBR list altogether.

Yes, I know... It can be so hard to read everything we want to :)

Storm Ooh, so joining this! :D

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3815 comments Love love love this book! I will probably be dropping in for the discussion when it starts :)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3815 comments @Anita - Karen is spot on about The Casual Vacancy. The writing is fantastic and has a very interesting story line. I would definitely recommend it. I think people were a little disappointed that it was the complete complete opposite of HP and even her writing style is different.

I also recommend The Cuckoo's Calling for anyone who likes mysteries. Again, it's very different from her other books and again has a very different writing style.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Been meaning to read this series again for a long time. I discovered the first three books in 1999 or 2000. I think it was right after book 3 was published but I'm not sure, too lazy to look up pub. dates. I had never even heard of this series (this was long before the hype), just saw them in the book store displayed near the entrance, became enchanted by the covers and the story so I bought them all at once and read them all in a weekend. Then, I suffered for about 6 months to a year before book 4 was published! I couldn't wait to read it!! I remember going to the PX (military store) the day of its release and devouring it probably in a weekend. I really had no idea this series would take off like it did.

I bought books 1 through 4 in British paperback from Toys R Us, but I never did read those. I wanted to see the little differences that were changed from that version to the US version.

I never did read all of book 5 so I'd love to revisit that one. There are a lot of details from that book that I'm unfamiliar with when I see people discussing it online. I didn't read the final book until it was out in paperback, yet I somehow managed to avoid all spoilers for it. So, anyway, yeah I want to re-read this and will try to participate here, but my newer reads will take priority.

I guess if people want to reread the entire series we'll just ask for new threads as they are needed.

message 24: by Erin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erin I will join this! I was just thinking about how I should reread this series because everyone else seems to have read the books more than once except for me.

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments I'll join too. I can't resist Harry!

Beth (jasonverlander) | 1567 comments The rules still apply here as well. Any spoilers go under the cut. I know the majority of people that will be doing the BR has already read this, but I haven't and don't want to be spoiled. So please, don't mentioned anything in later books in this thread unless it's under a cut

Kristie | 3596 comments I originally read this book because a neighbor of mine refused to let her kids read it when it first came out. She said that she was religiously opposed to her children reading it. So, of course, I had to read it to find out what was so bad about it. Turns out, it was because there is magic in the book. Her kids aren't allowed to read anything with magic in it. Too bad too, they missed out on a great book.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments My sister let me borrow the first book. Yay.

I'd love to re-read the series and I'm considering buying the audiobooks to do the re-read that way. Has anyone else listened to them? Is the narration good?

message 31: by ❀Tea❀ (last edited Oct 26, 2014 02:50PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9629 comments I didn't like it. I've tried both of them but honestly didn't see much difference between them. (Ok one had British accent :P) In both cases Hermione sounded too whiny to me.
But that's me. I've heard plenty of people saying it is great.
Would sample on Pottermore help?

Karsyn (imzadi) Karen wrote: "I'd love to re-read the series and I'm considering buying the audiobooks to do the re-read that way. Has anyone else listened to them? Is the narration good?"

Happened to see this, so thought I'd jump in and answer. I've listened to both narrators. I loved them both though I preferred Jim Dale. I think he's fantastic, some people don't like him. I guess JK prefers Stephen Fry who I thought was just fine, I'm just a Dale fan. Fry had some great sound effects that were cool tho.

Audible has samples as well that you could listen to, see what you think of them.

I will start late with you guys. I wanted to comment to get the notifications. :)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments I would like to join this BR. :)

Justin (rockstarintraining) Just watched the beginning of the first movie with my two boys (4 and 2). They don't seem to appreciate the awesomeness of it all, but it made me want to read the series again. Great to see this buddy read kicking off. I always loved the first book. Short, introduces the HP universe, and more fun than later when things get progressively darker. I'm in.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments My cousins don't appreciate it either. I'm shocked really. they're 8 and 11 (if I remember correctly) The problem though is, that they're not so good at English yet and therefore have troubles understanding it. But I beleive the first 4 movies is made so you can switch to Danish sync.

Kristie | 3596 comments This was my grandson watching Harry Potter for the first time.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Hahaha. This is the scene where...let's just say they lost the car. Can't remember which HP that is at the moment. The best part was after that, he kept pushing his little red car (you can see it behind him) away, then chasing it and shouting, "My car, my car!". He was so little that it came out, "Ma cah, ma cah!" lol I still literally laugh out loud when I see the video. :D

Adorable!

All this talk about the movies made me want to see one. I'm ill today, so a good movie is what I need I think. I decided on the Deathly Hallows Part 1, since it's so long since I saw that one.

I found us another victim for later start. She's HP newbie so we need to be careful with her. :P

Anita Reads | 1677 comments Ok. So no major spoilers. Has he/she seen the movies?

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3815 comments That picture is so adorable!!

This is my favorite series of all time. I started reading them when i was 11 and I think it was just the perfect age for me to get hooked / obsessed. It's such a huge part of my childhood and really helped my imagination and my love for books I think. I have read the books and the audiobooks about 20 times each (at the very least). I could probably narrate them myself.

I always love when someone is reading them for the first time! I'm always worried I will force these books on my own children and they won't have any interest ;)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3815 comments Also I'm ABSOLUTELY a Jim Dale fan. I couldn't even get through 1 book with Stephen Fry.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I've only reread them a couple of times. But I'm loving them every time nonetheless.

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9629 comments Anita wrote: "Ok. So no major spoilers. Has he/she seen the movies?"

You have couple of HP newbies here already so use spoiler tags for both just in case. Movies are also spoilerish. ;)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I know, but maybe some of the newbies were like me who started with the movies.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

I started with the books and then when I watched the horrible acting in the movies was shocked and hurt. But, kept watching them anyway lol
