Problem combining editions of the same book

There are two ebook versions combined, but I can not combine the paperback version with the ebook versions. The author has a paperback giveaway set up starting for the 21st.

We've tried making the metadata the same, series names the same, etc., and nothing has helped.

None of it matters if the primary authors are not the same. I have removed Smartypants Romance as an author and combined the books. (I have now removed them from all of the books where they were listed as an author.)
