Rachel (beneatthetrees) COMPLETION POST
The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman
Finished: October 29th
Pages: 399
Sin: Sloth
Criteria: Blue cover, I read it years ago and never finished the series so I'm getting back to it! (It was also listed on NRBC's Sin Sloth Shelf so I think it's a bingo with dark fantasy somehow?)

Wrath Mini-Challenge:
Read a book where a catastrophe takes place: Well, there's a witches vs bears war and the main premise is that the antagonists are separating children from their own souls
Read a book where someone is defenestrated: (the action of dismissing someone from a position of power or authority) two bears fight for the right to rule and the king is killed (and in a way dismissed from his position as the other bear becomes king?)
Read a book containing the phrase "hot-tempered": "Or whether this little child has enemies on Svalbard as hot'-tempered as the ones back at Bolvangar" (73%)
Read a book with a fight in the book (upclose & personal): The Bear King fight I mentioned
Read a book with a large battle in the book (involving armies): See catastrophe, haha!
Read a book with zombies: There's mention of the existence of zombies :"The Africans have a way of making a slave called a zombi" (88%)
Read a book with a person who likes to trick others / with a trickster: Lyra likes to lie and trick people, she is referred to as Lyra Silvertongue after tricking the bear king
Read a book where a religious crime takes place: The antagonists spiritually cut children from their daemons (their souls) to access Dust (aka original sin)
Read a book where poison is used: "We wouldn't have seen the Master put poison in the wine otherwise." (4%)

For some reason I have never read any of the Discworld books...hhmm..not sure why!

Oh no! :-(

Hopefully this one's better!

And I'm actually now seconding what Jenny said haha.

Fingers crossed!!

It's worth checking them out, though I would not read them in order. The first 2-3 are not that good.

I read The Colour of Magic/The Light Fantastic when I was 18 and was not particularly smitten by them. And then 20 years later Hogfather came into my hands and I JUST LOVED it.
Still, though Terry Pratchett became one of my favourite authors, his books are definitely acquired taste, methinks.
I love the City Watch books, the witches & Death in the discworld series, but the ones about the wizzards are more of a hit or miss with me.

From your quote, just to make sure - they are really doing long-distance attacks and not just shooting arrows from fairly close-by? I'm assuming so or you wouldn't have mentioned it, but wanted to make sure :-) Thanks!

Some of them aren't quite so bleak but they do tend to convey that kind of feeling. I like them for that because they're different from the more general crime novels.

The brothers were attacking herdsmen and only started shooting once the herdsmen stood up. I assumed it was from a distance but not that far.

Here's another quote of when there is a battle and Temujin and his army lie in wait and then fire at the approaching enemy:

"The first riders saw the barrier in their path...the arrows punched through the riders." Page 280

Sorry, there aren't any quotes with distances. I can look for an alternative task when I'm home.

I think the approaching army should work. Those are usually distance shots with arrows. I'll use that one. Thanks!

Rachel (beneatthetrees) Hello everybody, unfortunately, I have bad news. I was hoping to do this challenge so I could kick myself back into reading more. I'd thought it was a lapse in passion that was making me not read so much but now I realize it's a lack of time and energy. I need to drop out of this reading group, I'm so sorry!! I had so much fun and I love the prompts, I wish you all fabulous luck and I'm so glad I got to be on Team Sloth!

Currently, we have 17 read books, which isn't all that much yet.

Let's see where we are by Sunday with the larger books and when we know where everyone is at, and then we can see.

Honestly though, the way the reading is going this week, I'm thinking that most likely yours and Jenny's shorter books might be needed. (And if it's only one of those, we'll take the one with most pages, ok?)

I'm going to attempt to put a fat dent into Tower of Dawn today - bank holiday, yay! - because I really want to finish that this week. Depending on how it goes, I'll also try and finish Station Eleven but I'm honestly not sure if I can manage both. It's been a shitty week for finding time to read and I've got a NaNoWriMo meet to run tomorrow for 4 hours, and I'm meeting friends on Sunday, which is going to turn into a loooong chat session ;-)
