Have to thank my Mom for this book. Was talking to her about the challenge and how we needed to read books with animals in it but I was looking for books with obscure animals and couldn't think of any books that had those animals in them. And then she told me about this book she read years ago but was pretty sure there were obscure animals mentioned. Right she was 😊

Totally misread this 🙈 But yes, I think Stacie is right. We can find the same animal up to 7 times, no?

(This was awful. Gave it 1 star. It was her debut novel and it was so confusing and badly written. Compared to her other books like My Sisters Keeper and The Pact, this was bad. Honestly, don't bother with this one.)

Book:

Date Read: 10/25
Pages: 896
Sin: Lust (everyone has read but me), Gluttony (over 600 pages)
Mini-Challenge Animals:
Ant: "One day he sprained his ankle in his effort to avoid stepping on an ant."
Barnacle: "thick layers of barnacles had collected on its keel"
Bat, Scorpion, Centipede, Tarantula: "Can one imagine a naturalist refusing to study the viper, the bat, the scorpion, the centipede, the tarantula"
Bear: "Caught like bears in their dens"
Beaver: "Rose like gigantic beaver huts"
Porcupine/Beetle: "the porcupine bristles up, the beaver feigns death"
Bird/Fly: "Men who are envious of the flies and birds"
Bloodhound: "He should set the bloodhounds of the pack on his trail"
Booby:"Because it has pleased a great booby to come and lounge at the Luxembourg" (p. 597 location 20764)
Butterfly: "A whole bohemia of butterflies swooped down"
Cat: "pressing himself closer to the cat"
Caterpillars: "the traces left upon them of caterpillars"
Chamois/Hippopotamus: "it was a hippopotamus undertaking the pursuit of a chamois"
Chicken/Turkey: "A chicken jumping, and a turkey spreading its tail"
Moorhen:"Who eat moor-hens on Friday" (P. 44 location 2020)
I could find more of the non-tricky ones if need be but hopefully we can use one of the trickies! :) Finally finished!!!

For my second book, I have options with more animals but I also have the first two BOM books. Is it more helpful to read a BOM book?

Yes, this is true. Since we aren't reading an unlimited number of books, having only unique ones would've been cool, but it does still gives us a decent amount of points if we find the animal a second time :-)

Yikes :-/
I haven't ever read a Picoult so far, though I've had "My Sister's Keeper" on my shelf for quite a while after finding a second-hand copy somewhere ages ago.

Animals are only going to count for this week's mini challenge. So if you think you can finish another book before the countdown, an animal one can't hurt!
However, BOMs do bring more points than the mini challenge books because participating in the discussion and answering the questions is worth 20 points.
(This is totally helpful, I know haha.)
If you are limited for time and it has to be either one or the other (and not animal this week, BOM next week), then go for the BOM.

Ooookay, I'm going to keep spamming the thread :-p
So, books for this week so far:
We have 27 finished books.
2 more will be added tomorrow that Stacie has finished.
Vianvamp will finish 1 more (maybe 2).
I will finish 1 more.
Nicole could finish 3 more.
There may be one incoming still from Gemma, Joy, Eni and Melinda each.
I'm sure there'll be at least 1 more incoming from Snowtulip.
That gives us a total of 34 books that will be done for certain, with 6 books pending, bringing us to 40 books.
That leaves us with a little wiggle room.

If you still want me to play I'll post what I read. Just let me know what you want me to do.

I'm on meds now and my daughter is checking with me every day to make sure I take them :). I am reading but I am trying to make sure I don't overextend myself. So no more reading 2-3 books a day!! Sticking to 1 a day of 1 every two days. :)
