Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
Tower Teams VII
>
Team Avarice

Yea it does feel like a long time (2 weeks to go!) but that gives everyone plenty of time to finish up reads that you've started and to get the books that you want from your library (if there are waits).

1. Pages for all books that we read:
Btw 100-499 Pages 0.10 points per page
Btw 500-799 Pages 0.15 points per page
800+ Pages 0.20 points per page
We get these points no matter what, and this section is where we will get the most of our points. If you're able to get in some larger books, this is the time to go for it! That will at least be my goal ;)
2. Meeting Sins:
Color Cover 5 Points
Top Shelf 3 Points
Sin Criteria 1 Point
Sin Bingo (All 3) 7 Points
All books read should meet one of the options listed for one of the Sins - Ashleigh has them posted in one of the 1st posts of this thread and it is also posted in the All About Seven Sinful Towers thread. There is no goal per se, unless as a team we decide we want to try to go for a certain prize (like for highest number of books read from matching Sin). Some people like reading for the challenge so may try to read books that match all 3 to get Sin Bingo more, but I wouldn't focus too much on that. Otherwise you'll get stuck reading a bunch of books that you might not necessarily want to read. This is supposed to be fun and in the whole scope of things, it isn't worth a ton of points. If anything, try to find books with one of the color covers. Regardless we'll find a place for it. And if you REALLY want to focus on Sin Bingo, we can place some suggestions in one of the top threads as we find them and some that have been mentioned in the Captains Group. FYI - The other October BOM, Wilder Girls, will work for Sin Bingo as it is a green cover, YA, and was read by one of the players on another team.
Which also brings us to judging colors. As ruled by the mods, we will NOT be using color tools and will be judging color covers by: the eyeball method, and if there are any questions, ask us here. We can either make the determination here, or ask the other Mods in the Captains threads for opinions.
3. Current Book of the Month (BOM):Participating in one of the Books of the Month (BOM) is always fun, and if you get selected to write Discussion Questions (DQs), we get even more points. So far there are 2 Books of the Month (BOM) set for October: Gideon the Ninth (starting 7th) & Wilder Girls (starting 16th). There will be 1 more in the NBRC Back-Room (adult reads) but don't see a date set for it yet. Will keep you posted.
Participate in BOM 20 Points
Writing DQs 40 Points
4. Weekly Check-ins for Accuracy:
Btw 80%-120% Range +50 Points
Below 80% -20 Points
Over 120%-Below 250% -100 Points
Over 250% -200 Points
This is where COMMUNICATION becomes key. On the Planning Spreadsheet I did separate each of the weeks so we can keep track of the number of books we read each week so that we are not penalized by reading too little or too much. If you are unable to finish any of your books, or other team members read more than anticipated, we will need to make sure we communicate with each other so that we stay within the limits and don't get penalized. Please feel free to log your books in the Planning Spreadsheet, or if you are unable to/don't like using spreadsheets, please post the details in this thread.
Please let me know if you have any questions/thoughts/other things to add!

But I'm Ashlee from Virginia in the United States, and despite the delay in my introduction, I'm extremely excited to participate in Tower Teams!! This will be my first time ever so I'm equally daunted as I am excited, so let's hope I don't mess everything up haha
I read a pretty mixed-bag of genres; YA Fantasy, thrillers, zombie fiction, adult contemporary, basically anything that has an interesting synopsis. This challenge couldn't have come at a better time, because it's exactly what I need to get me back into reading consistently. Can't wait to start with all of you!

I'm Kelly, living in Washington now as of last March. Starting to get back into things again and looking forward to some reading.

Could be used for:
Pride: Award winning
Sloth: Been on my to-read shelf since 2015
Gluttony: 600+ page book
Greed: Anything Goes

I love horror, true crime, YA, lgbt, non- fiction on various subjects, crime mysteries, historical fiction, contemporary, and coming of age. I pretty much read everything besides romance. I will read it here and there (mostly for challenges if I can’t find anything else) but it’s definitely not my genre.
I’m super excited for this!

Looks like there'll be a wide range of books and genres read from this team!
So just under 2 weeks until the challenge starts (feels far too long away haha!). I think my first read will be Gideon the Ninth.
@Maria Helena I think that would count for blue, but I'll ask in the captains group to double-check.

Works for blue!

I plan on starting with Gideon for BOM and Heir of Novron on Kindle and A Feast for Crows on audio. Am hoping to finish the Song of Ice and Fire series and the Outlander series this round, and have several series I hope to finish as well so have a huge stack to begin with!

I can look thru them later tonight when I'm on my computer as well. Justneeded a starting place :)

Allison Ann on Team Ira read The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's visible on her 2019 Reading Challenge, though I'm not sure how to see the exact date from that page.

What is the Backroom BR and how do I not know about it yet? LOL

It was borderline but one captain agreed it was green. And I blew up the cover on my tablet and think it meets at least 50%.

It was opened a couple years ago for BRs of the more adult variety (MM romance/erotica) - as long as you're 18 or over, you can join!
Here is the link. And here is the link to the BR thread.

Yay!! Thank you, Cathy!!! Green it is!!

Last round, the discussions were more fun than the books so have fun :D

We shall see :) I hope it's not too cryptic.
I'm doing the Search Inside Yourself class today and tomorrow. It's been very interesting meditating in a room full of other people.

I'm popping in to brighten your day
LOL
I've been around for a bit and seen most of you on challenges (past & present).
I live and work a few miles from downtown Chicago. I mostly read romance (not paranormal unless it involves a challenge)
Looking forward to this challenge

Yay you're here! Hi Sunshine :)

Search Inside Yourself: The Unexpected Path to Achieving Success, Happiness Is the book that's based on the original class.

I think I need to check that book out Kelly!

What does Avarice reference mean?
Does it mean, for sin Bingo we only need two elements?
Points/Sin reason note that these are either / or, NOT stacking
7 points for achieving Sin Bingo (matching all three elements / two for Avarice)
5 points for each book used for colour cover
3 points for each book used for top shelf
1 point for each book used for sin specification (EXCEPT for Avarice, which gets 0 points

If you read a book that doesn't fit into any other category, you don't get any bonus points.
In order to achieve sin bingo for Avarice/Greed, you only need to read a yellow dystopian book.

Sorry, no. It has to be Dark Fantasy together, no variations except plural forms. At least it works for blue cover!

Got it! Thanks

The more pages the better chance of winning? I'm competitive....lol"
Yea I'm more on the competitive side too but am trying to take things easier :)
That's great that you'll be participating in that BOM. All books go by the edition you read but for that one, the mods have stated that we are to use the page count of 448 pages. There are times when there are a wide variety of editions with different page counts amounting to more or less so they sometimes state a specific page count to use.
