Yea I'm more on the competitive side too but am trying to take things easier :)

That's great that you'll be participating in that BOM. All books go by the edition you read but for that one, the mods have stated that we are to use the page count of 448 pages. There are times when there are a wide variety of editions with different page counts amounting to more or less so they sometimes state a specific page count to use.

Yea it does feel like a long time (2 weeks to go!) but that gives everyone plenty of time to finish up reads that you've started and to get the books that you want from your library (if there are waits).

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments So here is the breakdown on points & some thoughts (sorry this turned out to be longer than I thought it would!):

1. Pages for all books that we read:
Btw 100-499 Pages 0.10 points per page
Btw 500-799 Pages 0.15 points per page
800+ Pages 0.20 points per page

We get these points no matter what, and this section is where we will get the most of our points. If you're able to get in some larger books, this is the time to go for it! That will at least be my goal ;)
2. Meeting Sins:
Color Cover 5 Points
Top Shelf 3 Points
Sin Criteria 1 Point
Sin Bingo (All 3) 7 Points

All books read should meet one of the options listed for one of the Sins - Ashleigh has them posted in one of the 1st posts of this thread and it is also posted in the All About Seven Sinful Towers thread. There is no goal per se, unless as a team we decide we want to try to go for a certain prize (like for highest number of books read from matching Sin). Some people like reading for the challenge so may try to read books that match all 3 to get Sin Bingo more, but I wouldn't focus too much on that. Otherwise you'll get stuck reading a bunch of books that you might not necessarily want to read. This is supposed to be fun and in the whole scope of things, it isn't worth a ton of points. If anything, try to find books with one of the color covers. Regardless we'll find a place for it. And if you REALLY want to focus on Sin Bingo, we can place some suggestions in one of the top threads as we find them and some that have been mentioned in the Captains Group. FYI - The other October BOM, Wilder Girls, will work for Sin Bingo as it is a green cover, YA, and was read by one of the players on another team.

Which also brings us to judging colors. As ruled by the mods, we will NOT be using color tools and will be judging color covers by: the eyeball method, and if there are any questions, ask us here. We can either make the determination here, or ask the other Mods in the Captains threads for opinions.
3. Current Book of the Month (BOM):
Participate in BOM 20 Points
Writing DQs 40 Points
Participating in one of the Books of the Month (BOM) is always fun, and if you get selected to write Discussion Questions (DQs), we get even more points. So far there are 2 Books of the Month (BOM) set for October: Gideon the Ninth (starting 7th) & Wilder Girls (starting 16th). There will be 1 more in the NBRC Back-Room (adult reads) but don't see a date set for it yet. Will keep you posted.
4. Weekly Check-ins for Accuracy:
Btw 80%-120% Range +50 Points
Below 80% -20 Points
Over 120%-Below 250% -100 Points
Over 250% -200 Points

This is where COMMUNICATION becomes key. On the Planning Spreadsheet I did separate each of the weeks so we can keep track of the number of books we read each week so that we are not penalized by reading too little or too much. If you are unable to finish any of your books, or other team members read more than anticipated, we will need to make sure we communicate with each other so that we stay within the limits and don't get penalized. Please feel free to log your books in the Planning Spreadsheet, or if you are unable to/don't like using spreadsheets, please post the details in this thread.

Please let me know if you have any questions/thoughts/other things to add!

maria helena (mariahel) | 1924 comments I'm planning on reading Natural Causes (Inspector McLean, #1) by James Oswald . Just want to double check if it would work for cover colour blue (otherwise it works for a top shelf).

message 56: by Ash (new)

Ash | 206 comments I'm really late because of my wild work schedule, oops!
But I'm Ashlee from Virginia in the United States, and despite the delay in my introduction, I'm extremely excited to participate in Tower Teams!! This will be my first time ever so I'm equally daunted as I am excited, so let's hope I don't mess everything up haha

I read a pretty mixed-bag of genres; YA Fantasy, thrillers, zombie fiction, adult contemporary, basically anything that has an interesting synopsis. This challenge couldn't have come at a better time, because it's exactly what I need to get me back into reading consistently. Can't wait to start with all of you!

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments Hiya All :)

I'm Kelly, living in Washington now as of last March. Starting to get back into things again and looking forward to some reading.

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments Going to start on Quicksilver.

Could be used for:
Pride: Award winning
Sloth: Been on my to-read shelf since 2015
Gluttony: 600+ page book
Greed: Anything Goes

message 59: by Ash (new)

Ash | 206 comments Hi Kelly! Very bold to start off with a 600+ page book, I could never lol

message 60: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (writers_soul) | 426 comments Hi everyone! I’m Amanda from Michigan :) this is my first TT. I’m a substitute teacher & student working on my MA. I am chronically ill so I do have bad days/ weeks where I don’t read as much as I’d like. They are unpredictable which I do apologize for, but I’ll pull my weight!

I love horror, true crime, YA, lgbt, non- fiction on various subjects, crime mysteries, historical fiction, contemporary, and coming of age. I pretty much read everything besides romance. I will read it here and there (mostly for challenges if I can’t find anything else) but it’s definitely not my genre.

I’m super excited for this!

message 61: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments Welcome Maria Helena, Kristin, Stephanie, Ash, Kelly and Amanda!

Looks like there'll be a wide range of books and genres read from this team!

So just under 2 weeks until the challenge starts (feels far too long away haha!). I think my first read will be Gideon the Ninth.

@Maria Helena I think that would count for blue, but I'll ask in the captains group to double-check.

message 64: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I’ve heard mixed reviews on Quicksilver so look forward to seeing how you like this one Kelly!

I plan on starting with Gideon for BOM and Heir of Novron on Kindle and A Feast for Crows on audio. Am hoping to finish the Song of Ice and Fire series and the Outlander series this round, and have several series I hope to finish as well so have a huge stack to begin with!

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Ash, can you please be more specific re the criteria for Perks? ie which player/team/read when?

message 66: by Ash (new)

Ash | 206 comments I know it was someone on Team Ira, but I’ll check for specifics after I get home from work tonight. Do I post the specifics here or on the spreadsheet?

message 67: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments You can post either place, thanks!

I can look thru them later tonight when I'm on my computer as well. Justneeded a starting place :)

message 68: by Ash (new)

Ash | 206 comments Hey, I'm finally off from work!

We shall see :) I hope it's not too cryptic.

I'm doing the Search Inside Yourself class today and tomorrow. It's been very interesting meditating in a room full of other people.

message 82: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments Ooh Kelly that sounds interesting! The past year or so, I've been trying to meditate with the Headspace app, but I can imagine it's a whole other experience doing it with other people :)

Yay you're here! Hi Sunshine :)

message 87: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments That sounds really interesting! I've always wanted to try to meditate but can't seem to sit still & stop thinking to succeed.

message 88: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) | 1278 comments I also struggle to sit down and just switch off and stop thinking about things. My mind never seems to stop. I've always struggled to relax and unwind. My boyfriend used that Headspace app at one point but I never ended up giving it a go.

message 89: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments I want to use headspace more. I'm not very good at the meditation thing. But there was a big focus on how we listen to others and active listening and generous listening and all that kind of stuff. Gave me a lot to think about.

Search Inside Yourself: The Unexpected Path to Achieving Success, Happiness Is the book that's based on the original class.

message 90: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments I love the variety of Headspace, and I bought a premium subscription last month. The different modules and exercises are great. Like, if you want to unwind after a stressful day but only having a couple of minutes, they have an exercise for that. Or you're struggling to sleep, or struggling with fitness, they have exercises for that. It's so great. I need to get back into it, been lacking lately..

I think I need to check that book out Kelly!

message 91: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments Hi Sunshine!

We're all checked in now, yay!

message 92: by Sunshine (new)

Sunshine (sunshine22222) | 804 comments Hi....

What does Avarice reference mean?
Does it mean, for sin Bingo we only need two elements?

Points/Sin reason note that these are either / or, NOT stacking
7 points for achieving Sin Bingo (matching all three elements / two for Avarice)
5 points for each book used for colour cover
3 points for each book used for top shelf
1 point for each book used for sin specification (EXCEPT for Avarice, which gets 0 points

message 93: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments So Avarice is another word for Greed. To match a book to Avarice/Greed, you can read a yellow book, a dystopian book, or a book that doesn't fit into any other category.

If you read a book that doesn't fit into any other category, you don't get any bonus points.

In order to achieve sin bingo for Avarice/Greed, you only need to read a yellow dystopian book.
