Jill | 938 comments I don't really get this mini challenge. How does it work?

Ashleigh | 735 comments Jill wrote: "I'm sorry I missed the deadline. I thought I had until 4pm EST. I'm just getting home. Does this mean I need to move it to the next week?"

I added it to the ss because you had already notified us, so you just need to update it on your end :)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Great job Ashleigh! Better than I could've done for sure!

In Story 1, forgot Robbie's clothes title in the story.

Next week's challenge? We have bingo cards and we just need to read books that connect to the words on the bingo cards.

I added it!

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments So Vikki mentioned a book for Card 2 - is everyone ok with reading for that card? You can try to find that item on the cover, in the title, or use your imagination to fit it into one of the categories (just please list a description/justification of how you think it fits).

Each square is worth 5 points, with 7 points for completing any line (so 6 points total if we get the completion). It's worth more points than any of the sins, except Sin Bingo, so please try to fit it into one of the squares for the Bingo card.

Also, we're definitely not in the running for any prizes for overall points (we're in 11th place overall) but we ARE in 4th place for mini-challenge points so let's try to read more for the mini-challenge if possible.

Sunshine (sunshine22222) | 804 comments Hi, what will get us more points
- Sin Bingo
- Top Shelf
- Colour cover
- Mini-challenge

message 713: by [deleted user] (new)

I know that the SS says only books completed beginning 11/11, but that's Sydney, Australia time correct? So technically if I finish one tonight it will count even though for me it would have a completion date of 11/10?

message 714: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Yep, that's the Australia time. Ashleigh & I usually change it but that would be great if you posted it as completed on 11th.

Also for the Avarice Mini-Challenge, if it is simply a word in text, don't think that would work. The challenge is for "cover, title, genre or theme" so there should be something more to it than just word in text.

message 715: by Cathy M. (last edited Nov 10, 2019 05:42PM) (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Also I've added the Bingo card at the side on the mini-challenge tab on our planning sheet. When a word is claimed or completed, it will change colors so we can see where lines are forming.

When looking for other books to read for the week, please take a look at the card and try to fill the open spots to complete lines if possible!

And please look to see if you can move any of your books to open spots to complete any lines.

message 716: by Ash (new)

Ash | 206 comments Oh noooooo, word in text isn’t applicable? So tragic, I just saw like 3 sentences that fit some sort of slot in Lolita. Oh well, guess it can’t always be that easy lol

message 717: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I didn't say it was not applicable, just that can't be the sole reason you're using it. You should be able to justify how the book fits the word, whether it's something that happens in the book, or a theme. That's why they say to use your imagination and be creative.

Ack! Ok, I have one that I entered for text. I'll have to find someplace else for it to fit. Thanks for letting me know!

message 720: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 10, 2019 06:58PM) (new)

I think I was mislead by the whole "matches the word in some way" thinking it could be ANY way and that the "cover, title, genre, theme" were just examples of a few of the ways you could make it fit.

message 721: by Ash (new)

Ash | 206 comments Yeah I made that same mistake.

message 722: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Sorry, there were conflicting ideas on what to allow but you can scratch what I said earlier - you can use if it fits by word in text without any other justification.

message 723: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments So we can use a book to find those words in the text? How many words per book allowed?

message 724: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments Just one word per book, so we need 49 books to complete a card

message 725: by [deleted user] (new)

So fully completing a card puts us into the penalty level for # of books read, correct?

message 726: by maria helena (new)

maria helena (mariahel) | 1924 comments Cathy M. wrote: "Sorry, there were conflicting ideas on what to allow but you can scratch what I said earlier - you can use if it fits by word in text without any other justification."

What about words in text if you read books in another language than English?

message 727: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments @Cyndee yes I think the max books without getting a penalty is 45 books

@Marie Helena hmm I'm not sure how that would work. But you don't have to just find the word in the book - as long as you can link the book to the word. So it could be something on the cover, it could be a character in the book, there are many possibilities not just finding the word. The rules say to be as creative as possible

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments I had books lined up for this week. Going to see if I can fit them into the Card. I have a whopper of a book with 912 pages. So, I might not be able to read more than 3.

The Savior could work for mansion. The Black Dagger Brotherhood all reside together in a mansion.

Sunshine (sunshine22222) | 804 comments sweet!!!

I do need to get back to that series

message 734: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm trying to remember exactly what role the Aristocracy played specifically in that book. Let me go check my copy and I'll get back to you. :)

message 735: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I think they refer to the Aristocracy as the "royals"/upper echelon of the vamps who (in earlier books - I'll only on book 11) were against Wraith as king. They might even use it when outsiders talk about the king.

Yep, okay so for this specific book, they aren't in it much. The two biggest references are:
1. Abalone, King Wrath's advisor, is a member of the Aristocracy but he isn't stereotypical of the uppity, holier-than-thou.

and 2 (the biggest). Throe begins to target the Aristocracy in his drive to overthrow Wrath.

Thanks Cyndee! #2 seems like a great justification, or can pull up a quote to fit that task.

I'll grab a quote. I've got my copy open in front of me :)

message 739: by [deleted user] (new)

p. 427: "After all, the aristocracy was centuries away from any fighting tradition."

message 740: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Thanks so much Cyndee! Hopefully Namita looks here before long to see that we helped figure out where to place them :P

And please note that I shaded out specific boxes in the 1st column and last. Have been playing around with what we currently have claimed to maximize the points. That doesn't mean you can't use the green shaded spots, just please try to fit your book in one of the inner spots, or 1st or last row, first! This is based on estimate of finishing 41 books.

I've been trying to find books for some of the harder ones - have one for Pharaoh or Sheikh (both are in my book), found an audio for Might and a short ebook for Deluxe. I have plenty to read for the week but will see what we still need closer to the end of the week to see what else I can fit in.

Especially for those of you who do not comment a lot, PLEASE let us know what you plan on reading this week ASAP so we can plan this out!

message 741: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 11, 2019 05:22PM) (new)

Are there words you want me to look for in mine to move them around that would work better than where they are now? I didn't use text for any of them yet and as I'm reading more into them, I'm more in touch with the themes and where they could fit, so I might be able to make them fit better. Just let me know!

message 742: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I don't think we need to move anything around for now, but that could change depending on the books for the players who haven't checked in this week or logged what they plan to read.

BUT if your books work for any of the other words, especially for spots that are still open, if you could list them in the Notes section, that would be a tremendous help! That way, if some books get logged that only work for spots already claimed, we can move them around.

And you can always use the quote option! Sorry, that was my fault - I read other comments from other teams who said no to quotes so that's what I went by originally. But checked with other captains who said they were allowing that option.

message 743: by [deleted user] (new)

No need to apologize! It was no big deal to find another spot for them and everything is so open to interpretation. I'll definitely look up the unclaimed words and note anything found.

message 744: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Namita I'm adding your books to the mini-challenge as:

Queen of Air - Crown (quote)
Steelheart - Bank (that whole scene in the Prologue at the bank) + quote
The Savior - Aristocracy w/the explanation/quote that Cyndee pulled from above

Please feel free to move them if you feel they would work in better spots! Just thought I'd leave some of the easier spots open for one of the later additions.

I'm currently reading Vargattacken by Lars Berge and Mord.net (Colt, #1) by Dan Buthler . So far, I haven't come up with a way of linking them to any words by cover/theme/plot so I figured word in text was the most likely way of being able to use them for the mini challenge.

message 746: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments That 2nd book could work for horse - the MC's name is Jacob Colt - last name Colt is a type of horse.

message 747: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) | 1278 comments I’ve finished my first book which I updated on spreadsheet. I’ll probably only get 1 more read this week which I’ve already added to spreadsheet

message 748: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments I added Searching for Sylvie Lee by Jean Kwok
I know it will work for blue color cover.
Unless we want to use this for the mini. What do you think?

Since I started an audiobook today, I'm getting back into my groove. I was in a bit of a slump. Will finish 2, try for 3

message 749: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments If we use my book above for mini, what words are left to be claimed for bingo card?

message 750: by Ashleigh (last edited Nov 12, 2019 06:50AM) (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments Which word would you use your book for?

The words we have left unclaimed (to complete lines) are:

Might
Chairman
Caviar
Midas
Oyster
Horse
Mansion
Sheikh
Tiara
Deluxe
