ABANDONED. SciFi - guy is climbing a mountain to commune with the gods, climbs through a wall of wind, falls asleep at the top, dreams of voices in his sleep, wind blows him off the mountain to his death when he tries to climb down.

The 'gods' are some kind of machine intelligence who killed their creators I think, and their programming prevents them from actually stopping humans from climbing the mountain to talk to them. They can read and talk into minds. But if the human doesn't have the password or whatever to take control of them, they are able to kill him/her. And they pushed humans back to a primitive state and try to prevent anyone from ever challenging their control. There's like a cult that can fool their (robot minions'?) mind reading through ritual meditations.

lots of other weird stuff happens but I believe that was the beginning part.

Probably part of a series.

Read it in the 90s maybe.
