Plch | 25 comments I bought this book in 1998 or 1999, a thick paperback with a light blue cover, a watercolor of a glass with a few red, orange and green toothbrushes inside. I think the author was a woman, the setting was contemporary, late '80s or early '90s.

The protagonist was a woman, I'd say older than 40 and younger than 50, actually, now I remember the book started with her birthday but I don't remember which one! She's married to the love of her life, they met when they were both young children in NY (they are both of Jewish background), they have always been together and now they live near Hollywood where he is the star of a tv series, nothing huge but it's a steady one. They have two grown children, the older is a daughter, who has finished college and is now working in a restaurant (in Chicago?), the younger is a son and he's studing law.

At the beginning of the novel we can read some of an article published on the protagonist on a woman magazine and how they wrote that she has the perfect home and the perfect life... but her life seems to fall down into bits in the next few days.

First the TV series is cancelled, then the man that had been admistrating her money disappears with all the money (and other people's money too), then, trying to contact her husband about this disaster, she finds that her husband is having an affair with a woman she knows, an artistit that creates 'erotic ceramics'. Afterward, her daughter tells her she wants to marry her boss and move to Australia and her son that he wants stop with law and to became an actor.
In the meantime an handsome man seems to be falling in love with her and she is not sure about what to do.

I don't remember much of the rest but that she and her whole family, husband included, goes on holiday in central America at some Club Med, during this holiday the son discover his father's infidelity and gets mad with him.

Afterward she falls ill (heart attack??)... and...

...I left my copy in a phone booth (remember them?) in prague! I had bought it in Prague in a half price book store, one of the few titles in English on sale, when I went back there was no copy left and not other bookstore had it.

Can anyone help me? thank you!

Anna | 207 comments It sounds similar to Almost Paradise by Susan Isaacs, but not all the details fit. (And I haven't found an edition that has toothbrushes on the cover...)

Plch | 25 comments Thank you for your help, I'm sure it's not it but it looked promising. For one thing it's too old, then the story is focused just on the woman and her present not on others or the woamn's past.
>>I also checked other books by the same author but none seems to fit.

Abou the cover: I'm pretty sure the author was American but maybe that was the cover of the British edition? In Prague we mostly get those.

Here's a description:
Rendezvous Review: On the twenty-third year of a very good marriage between Michael and Annie Wilder, several things happen almost all at once. Michael begins a turbulent affair with a basically unattractive, but sexually insatiable woman. Annie's father dies. Their best friend, who is also their money manager, runs away with all of their money. Their young son is unhappy in college. Their daughter wants to marry a man they have never met, who lives in Australia. (view spoiler)

Plch | 25 comments Thank you so much! That's it! Compliments! It's really quite an obscure book I now realize.
Typing from my phone, tomorrow I'll move the tread.
