Wren (wrenlee) Hello.
It's Wren here. I was wondering if anyone had any good dystopian books to read.
There has to be a few things:
-Action
-Little to no romance (Exception: A fantastic whirlwind romance.)
-A few badass characters

I would prefer a complicated story with little romance or family drama. (Those annoy me.) I would love to get not-so-known books if you get what I mean. I would also love it if no one mentioned 'The Hunger Games' or 'Divergent' or 'The 5th Wave'. (Read those already.)

So....
HELP!

Haha. I've read all of those already.

Betty Cross (bettycross) | 70 comments My YA Novel Discarded Faces has a little bit of romance but concerns a rebellion in an urban environment against an oppressive dictator. The romance is a girl/girl relationship, which is VERY illegal in their society,

Available only as an ebook.

message 5: by Ella (new)

Ella (ella_2703) Slated by Teri Terry has a little action, some romance however it isn't the whole story line, and a very good and complicated storyline. I dont know if you've read it but its one of my favourites.

I suggest these Legend (Legend, #1) by Marie Lu The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater and False Memory (False Memory, #1) by Dan Krokos

message 7: by Wren (new)

Wren (wrenlee) V, I've read all of those! Funnily enough.

v.v | 442 comments Ok how about these

Tiger's Curse (The Tiger Saga, #1) by Colleen Houck and The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa and Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant

message 10: by Wren (new)

Wren (wrenlee) Um...adult. New adult. Middle grade. Romance. Contemporary. (But I've read '13 Reasons Why' and the Stephanie Perkins books.) I've read a lot of popular books in dystopian. 'The 5th Wave'. 'The Hunger Games'. I've read TMI and TID. I've read TMR. The first Giver.

message 11: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jessilovesbooks) | 364 comments The Young World (The Young World, #1) by Chris Weitz All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre The Testing (The Testing, #1) by Joelle Charbonneau Not a Drop to Drink (Not a Drop to Drink, #1) by Mindy McGinnis In the After (In the After, #1) by Demitria Lunetta

They all have a bit of romance, but I didn't feel like it was the main focus in any of them.

message 15: by Madi (last edited Oct 23, 2014 04:16PM) (new)

Madi Monument 14
PODs
Steelheart
Unwind

All have a little romance, but it didn't distract from the plot/setting/other characters :)

I tried to pick some of the lesser known ones because it seems like you've read a lot of the popular ones.

Unwind was my fave. I also really liked steelheart...mainly because I love dystopians where the characters have their own vernacular.

message 16: by Wren (new)

Wren (wrenlee) Jessica. You have brought to the table books I haven't read.
V, see? I haven't read everything! I've read The Testing and Enclave, though. I have Not a Drop to Drink. Right now. I have it. I'm not on it yet. I've considered In the After. Didn't like the idea. Nor did I really like the idea of The Young People...

message 17: by Wren (new)

Wren (wrenlee) Mmm.. I also intend to read All Our Yesterdays...

message 18: by Wren (new)

Wren (wrenlee) I've read Unwind. The whole series. I finished Undivided YESTERDAY.
And finished the whole series of Monument 14!
And I will read Steelheart.

Andrea: BookStoreFinds (bookstorefinds) | 27 comments The darkest minds! Two books out with one novella and book 3 is coming out on the 28th! Awesome series!

message 20: by Wren (new)

Wren (wrenlee) Thanks for the suggestions. Though...it seems like most are on my TBR list or I've read them! Which is really funny.
But it makes me feel like I can say dystopian is my genre.

Andrea: BookStoreFinds (bookstorefinds) | 27 comments I read External Forces recently and I Loved it! Not quite dystopian but it was great!

message 22: by Wren (new)

Wren (wrenlee) Ooh. I've read the Darkest Minds. Can't wait for In the Afterlight!

Andrea: BookStoreFinds (bookstorefinds) | 27 comments I'm currently reading Sovereign (Sovereign, #1) by E.R. Arroyo and then The Offering (Sovereign, #2) by E.R. Arroyo by E.R. Arroyo and I'm loving it!

Glenn Conley (gecizzle) Hear Me Scream. A bit of rape, maybe. But not really any romance. Lots of action.

I may have just the book for you - it has action, little to no romance, a few badass characters and, while there is a slight bit of family drama, it is a much more complicated story than that. It's also not-so-known - in fact, I just added it to Goodreads today and it will be available in a few weeks on Amazon. And BELIEVE IT OR NOT, wrens actually play a part in the story!

Alice in No-Man's-Land Alice in No-Man's-Land by James Knapp

message 36: by Kristina (new)

Kristina Definitely Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

message 37: by Benjamin (last edited Nov 30, 2015 09:48AM) (new)

Benjamin | 26 comments I didn't take all the time to read all of the suggestions, so I apologize if I'm repeating any, but a few I've read are:

The Legend Series by Marie Lu.
The Maze Runner Series by James Dashner.
Starters/Enders by Lissa Price.

Also, stand alone novels (that are slightly connected, but can be read individually) are these books by Jessica Khoury:

Origin
Vitro
Kalahari (Haven't read this one yet, but it is connect to the others as well, I believe.)

With the exception of The Maze Runner I can't really promise Romance isn't involved in any of these. And it is in The Maze Runner, just not at all the driving force of the story. but romance in a YA is nearly impossible to avoid. But I never felt the romance in these ones are "annoying" or in your face.
