It does-and the upper loft is more books!!! I booked this sight unseen (my sister recommended) for a surprise for my husband and our 30 yr anniversary. But I tell ya, he is never going to believe I did not know this library was there🤣🤣

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11223 comments Anita, could the mods discuss the possibility of tweaking the timing rules a bit for the next couple months? Perhaps set an earlier target date for the first count? And maybe just a day for any extra voting.?
Just an idea. Thanks.

We will confer! Let me know your objective as that will aid in the discussion. Not everyone checks in each day so we do want to give everyone a chance to chime in. The extra voting is actually usually absolutely critical to what gets selected so one day is not really adequate unfortunately.

I was talking about the Tag reveal. I guess I wasn't clear.

We don't see what the voting patterns look like, so you're the best judge of how much time is needed. If most people vote in the first 4-5 days, then you might know if there is a clear loser by the 20th. If we had a runoff vote then, this would allow time to have a final decision by the 23rd. If all three are viable, perhaps we could let the votes stand as they are on the 23rd at noon, even if they're close. (Or you could be the tie-breaker.) This way we'd always have the tag (and trim and horizon) decisions on the 23rd. If the #1 vote is really clear before the 23rd, perhaps we could get an early answer in short months or holiday months.

My reasons: Mainly, it's nice to have one predictable day to set aside time to plan. (Others may really need a weekend day for planning.) Most months, the Trim # and horizons country are more time sensitive (to me) than the tag decision. 1) If I get my (Trim) library requests in early, it reduces stress and may save me money. 2) I also appreciate (and enjoy) extra time for the research and discussion about the horizons books. 3) The tags might help me to decide what to read (or postpone) during the last crucial week of the month. I always have more books than I have time to read.

If you had a target day of the 20th (or the 21st), you might post a note that they're all close (to motivate the stragglers to vote), or announce a runoff. Either way, the highest vote at noon on the 23rd would win.

Thanks for listening!

I am happy with the week long voting for the theme in the first place. Having been on here for over 6 years I have found that some months I have much more difficult time getting on GR regularly than others, or I might log on and not have time to explore the shelves if I feel I need to. Also, some years can be crazier than others as well.

As for tie breakers, one day isn't enough, either. I still use a PC and don't have access to this on a smart phone, etc, so need to have time when I log in (and this is how I like it--I don't want to be tied into stuff all of the time, but also smart phones give me headaches literally).

Oh that looks like a wonderful retreat .... where is it located?

Hubby and I did a week-long retreat earlier this month at Cherry Ridge Retreat in the Hocking Hills of Ohio. We stayed in the STILL WATERS cabin. Serene and beautiful setting.

Holly R W | 3184 comments @ Book Concierge, My husband and I talk about going to Hocking Hills. We had to cancel a trip there earlier in the summer. We were going to stay in the lodge at the state park. When you were there, what were the highlights of your trip?

message 62: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3114 comments Just my two cents that might appease everyone. Why not vote earlier in the month? Instead of 15th, vote of 5th. We still have the same amount of time to vote, same amount of time to re-vote when necessary, and more time to "plan".

Not trying to rock the boat, just a suggestion.

It is located in the woods near a small town called Caseville, located right on the shore of Lake Huron(Michigan). We celebrate the opening of summer there, Memorial Week-end, every year. However, we always camp. So this will be a true surprise for my husband-No set-up, no trailer troubles (which has been happening way too often lately), no dog to walk.

Cherry Ridge looks wonderful! I am saving that link for future reference, as Ohio is only a hop, another hop and a jump and skip away! It looks very similar, but ours is a Bed and Breakfast. (that's a bonus for me, NO KITCHEN!) It is an old church that was converted. Our room is on the lower level with a screened in porch over looking a pond also! The weather here has been lovely-low 70's, praying it stays that way!

I for one do not like the idea of letting a close vote stand as is. Although I get anxious for the reveal and the posting of the challenge tags, for me that is a part of the excitement of the game!

message 65: by Meli (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments I am on board for voting early. It doesn't really matter much to the reading itself, you just get to plan earlier. The 5th seems real early, but again I guess it doesn't matter when ... the first month, if we change, would be more workload on the admins, but once we get through the first round it would be the same time lag in between.

message 66: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10341 comments If the 5th seems a bit early, we could move the starting date up by 2 days, to the 13th, and leave the process as is. So, if it's a tie, we still end on the 23rd.

message 67: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8493 comments I'm fine with the process as it is. Yes, it's a tiny bit more of a challenge if we have to wait an extra day or two when there's a close vote. But bear in mind that while we've had a couple of nail biters in the last few months, over the course of the group's history it's almost always clear cut.

I think the reason for the run-offs has to do with a change made a few years back ... the "winning" tag isn't JUST the one with the most votes; it also must have at least 50% of the vote.

As for planning .... If I don't already have them on hand, I've already requested books from the library to fill any possible winner. Trim and Horizons are a bit more challenging, but I've got a month to get them in hand. I don't make any special effort to match the Horizons book to the monthly tag; can't plan for the Trim in any case.

Amy | 13038 comments I have zero complaints. Just wanted to say that I really appreciate how much work in the moderators put into this. They also have to consider their own schedules. I also like the idea of not really knowing what the next tag is going to be until closer to the end of the month. Not that I don’t also enjoy planting and look forward to hearing everything come down. But in the event of a tie I can wait the extra two days. Fabulous job moderators!

message 71: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3114 comments Just wanting to clarify. I have to complaints and am okay with the way things are. I don't "plan" like others. I was just looking for a compromise that may work.

message 72: by Meli (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments I also have no complaints, just support moving it up for planning purposes, but it doesn't hinder my enjoyment! Not a strong request, just meant to say "yeah, I'm down for that if people want to do it."

All the moderator's hard work is much appreciated!

message 73: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9370 comments Thanks for all of the feedback!

We are "listening" and discussing behind the scenes a bit.

There are a lot of reasons why we do things the way we do them and when we do them, but what I am hearing is that it would be really good if we could have a decision by noon on the 23rd while at the same time not disenfranchising any members who really are interested in voting.

I have an idea that I believe will eliminate the extra re-vote days while still ensuring there is a clear tag winner. We will give it a try next month as a trial run and see how it goes.

Ditto that.

I understand the impatience as I look forward to the planning stage, but I am not asking for changes to an already difficult and time consuming task.

I like the idea of extending voting when it is neck and neck between two--those who have voted for the distant third one can make the difference. I didn't vote for survival, but when I've been in the tiny distant third I've liked having the option to add my voice.

If the mods agree, I think that Jason's suggestion could work as long as we have time to adjust the the idea so we can keep it in mind :)

message 79: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10341 comments We could always update the survey to include a second choice in case we run into close votes. Just want to add I have no complaints, either, just offering suggestions in case it is helpful.

Nikki | 663 comments Just want to add my agreement on how much I appreciate all the effort put in by the admins and the thoughtful way that you handle these kinds of requests.
