Name of book, or name of author.. about two physicians, one in medieval times, one in modern. Book is telling the stories of how they practice, mirroring the stories of how they practice. /s

I am trying to find the name of or the author of a book I read. It's fiction. My be under "sic-fi"? The title is something like "The Physician's______" Something like that. It may have been "the Physician's Assistant"? Something with "Physician" in it. I can't really remember. I bought it from B&N in 2005, it was on a shelf marked "new Author" . The book is about two physicians in different era's of time, one in the medieval times, one in the modern era, and the book goes back and forth mirroring the stories about how they practice.
That's all I can remember about it. Please if anyone knows the author or Title, let me know. I tried doing a search on Yahoo! for "The Physician's Assistant" but couldn't find anything. Which leads me to believe that is not the name of the book.

Just an FYI: This is part of a trilogy, the first book being The Plague Tales.
Don't think I finished the last book, but read the 1st two and really liked them.
