RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments Yay! We are at the end of the book. I finished it on the 22nd because I couldn't put it down. I will now start to answer the questions. I was worried I'd give away stuff.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments Day 2 - Chapters 7-12 - DQs

6. So the "quiet" was a girl. She's wearing clothes similar to Todd's but newer. So much newer, they look like a uniform. When I first read this part my immediate thought was that perhaps that was the big secret -- the women/girls hadn't all died, but instead might be sequestered somewhere else like a concentration camp? What were your initial thoughts about the girl & where she might have come from?
I felt she came for another town or city that was better off. Somehow she was separated with her group. Possibly something to do with the Spackles.

7. How in the world did Aaron survive being drug off by a crocodile? His Noise is louder and crazier than everyone else's. I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't more to Aaron. Any thoughts on where Aaron might fit in? I don't think I believe he is truly dead. What do you think? Will we be seeing more of him in the future?
I don’t know how Aaron survived, a lot of will to survive perhaps. Aaron is one of the main people in their area. I think he has a lot of say or influence. We might see him or others like him.

8. Aaron referred to the girl as "The Holy Sacrament", "The Sign from God", and "The Path of the Saint". He also pictured the girl drinking wine and partaking of the host. These all seem to have significant Catholic undertones. What part do you think religion might play as the novel continues?
I don’t think the novel itself seem religious I think that it’s the town and people that seem to be more of that stock.

9. Aaron ultimately envisioned the girl being sacrificed. Could that be the big secret? Do you think that is what happened to all the women/girls?
I have no idea what happened to the women/girls but something happened. Something odd. Perhaps females are sacrifices?

10. The air ship, and the surrounding greenery, seem to be still smoking making it seem the crash just happened -- or at least not that long ago. They haven't gone that far from the outskirts of Prentisstown. You would think somebody saw or heard something. Could that be why Aaron was spending so much time in the swamp? Do you think the kids are in more danger than just people looking for Todd?
That’s a really wonderful question and I can’t answer it as this time without giving away major spoilers. So I will skip this one.

11. The girl seems to not react like you would think she would if the dead couple were in fact her parents. Does anyone else think that there is going to be more to the girl's story? Something that's going to be revealed later -- a big prophecy perhaps, or somehow she's the pivotal point in some larger story?
I noticed too she wasn’t reacting huge on that. It did seem a little odd but if she was on a ship then perhaps this whole area is new to her. Perhaps culture shock and trying to survive.

12. The descriptions of the Mayor and his circle in the first chapters were very reminiscent of societies usually portrayed in dystopian novels. Those novels however are usually set many years into that society -- after the society is fully formed, complete control, a supreme ruler -- this seems to be how you would imagine one of those societies would begin: burning books, outlawing school, etc. Do you think their break-off settlement could have been from a larger similar society?
Oh that’s a wonderful question. Perhaps they are a break-off. Or there are other small settlements.

13. There have been slight references to the world they inhabit that mark it as different from ours. Two moons. The cassor (bird like creatures). The Spackle. Have you noticed any other different traits?
The huge thing is the noise and no women.

14. Manchee makes me think of Oberon from the Iron Druid Chronicles, although with a bit less vocabulary. While it might, on occasion, be fun to hear what an animal is thinking, I don't think I would want it to be constant influx. The girl at first didn't seem to be able to hear the Noise, she also hasn't spoken. Why do you think she hasn't tried to communicate in any way verbally with Todd?
I think everything is overwhelming to her. She’s just observing. She’s smart for that.

Chapters 38 - end

45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?
There is always hope and this part of the book was one of my favorites.

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
yes he is finally learning how to translate body language and important stage he has never learned being isolated and raised the way he was.

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?

48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?

49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?

50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
Will definitely continue with the series

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments DQs - Day 3 - Chps 13-19

15) In chapter 13 we see that Viola is beginning to open up and speak to Todd. Do you see Todd's & Viola's relationship developing further? Would you like to see it develop? Do you think it is a healthy relationship? Why or why not?
Oh, I do. I see a coming of age story with a twist of bonding of good friends, maybe romance, especially if she is the only girl.

16) Once Todd and Viola burn down the bridge they meet a woman by the name of Hildy. Hildy always calls Todd & Viola 'pup'. Why do you think she does this? Is it a term of endearment or something else?
I think it’s like kid. Little one, wee man, etc. Just a nickname for kids in general.

17) Todd expresses surprise when he discovers that Hildy is married "to a man with Noise". Why do you think he is so surprised? Tam is also able to quieten his Noise so that he is virtually 'normal'. Do you think that realising this of Tam that Todd may feel it could be possible for him to also learn how to do the same thing with his Noise?
I do think it may help him look into himself and figure out how to calm his noise of mask it.

18) When Viola & Todd arrive in Farbranch, Todd is initially pleasantly surprised by the calmness of the towns people and how the Noise here is so different from Prentisstown. However, he soon discovers that the name Prentisstown turns these calm people into very angry people. Why do you think the name 'Prentisstown' has this affect on those in Farbranch?
I think because something happened there. Why else would they be angry?

19) Todd & Viola are on the run from the men of Prentisstown who happen to also be gathering an army to capture Todd. Why is it so important for the Prentisstown men to capture Todd? What threat, if any, does he pose for them?
I don’t know. The only think I can think of is he is special is some way. He’s the youngest male there.

20) When Matthew goes crazy he traps Todd & Manchee in the barn. Manchee really comes into his own here when he tries to protect Todd by biting Matthew. Matthew then responds by chopping off part of Manchee's tail with his machete. How did you feel when this happened?
I was upset. How dare he attack Manchee. I love Manchee and Manchee is one of the best parts of the story.

21) In light of the fact that Todd is only a young boy (12 years old) why is an army necessary to capture him? The only weapon he has is a knife so why can't he captured by one or two people rather than an army?
I don’t know if the army is after Todd. Why would they send an entire army after him? It doesn’t make sense.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments DQs for Part 4: Chapters 20 – 25

22. Prentisstown men are marching and kicking down door in Farbranch. Todd goes through the list of men he sees and notices Ben and Cillian aren’t there. He says, “If they ain’t there, then that means once and for all. And there’s yer lesson. There ain’t nothing good that don’t got real bad waiting to follow it.” Why do you think Ben and Cillian are absent from the group?

The either ran away or are killed.

23. Do you think it is wise of Todd and Viola to choose not to go into any other settlement other than Haven, in case the army follows them and destroys it like they did in Farbranch? Also put into consideration about Cillian’s letter are warning to Farbranch.
I think they should have listened to Cillian’s litter and as they are passing through towns to warn people.

24. The book. As Viola reads the letter from Cillian in Todd’s mother’s book, “There are things you don’t know about our history, Todd, and I’m sorry for that but if you knew them you would be in great danger. The only chance you have of a welcome is yer innocence.” What mysteries do you think has happened in their history? Why would his innocence be his only chance? Do you think it has anything to do with no women/girls especially since there are women in other settlements?
Whatever it is in their history it isn’t good because if it’s better to not tell him because it would cause more danger it has to be bad. I think his innocence is what will keep him alive. People will not blame him or judge him. I do think it has something to do with women and people in their settlements. They do say it’s cursed.

25. Also, in the letter from Cillian it states, “the wider world has to be warned, Todd. Prentisstown is on the move. The plan has been in the works for years, only waiting for the last boy in Prentisstown to become a man.” Do you still think the army is after Todd? Why doesn’t the wider world need to be warned?
I think the army is going to have a war on one or more areas. I think Todd is just in the path of it.

26. Crickets that chirping “sex sex sex”, dogs that you can hear their thoughts and they can hear yours, giant cows saying “Here”, horses thinking “snake”. Do you think the Noise they hear is a universal language for anyone and everyone to understand?
I do think it’s somewhat universal. Even when Todd killed the Spackle he saw the fear and felt the fear of it.

27. We learn a little more about Aaron and his preaching of hellfire, damnanyshun, judgement, and end of the world? Why would he be preaching this is it’s a somewhat newish settlement?
I feel Aaron is warped. He is angry and wants to have his settlement his way and if others are not what he thinks is right he will try to manipulate the preaching to get what he wants.

28. Do you think Viola is right when she says that Todd that he has an army after him who wants to make him a killer? That if they can make him a killer they can make anyone a killer?
I think she is very right and very observant. She’s a smart girl.

29. Todd and Voila meet a Spackle. The Spackle is skinning a fish and very scared by Todd and the knife. Todd kills him with the knife. What are your thoughts about this scene?
I didn’t like this about Todd. It was an upsetting scene and I’m happy he felt remorse about it. I thought there was going to be an army of Spackles after him.

30. Aaron has re-appeared. He knocks out Voila (I assume with something like chloroform) and knocks out Todd but before knocking out Todd says, “I have no further use for you, boy.” Any thoughts to what happens next?
I think he is done with him and has what he needs. As for what happens next, I know because I finished the book.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments Daily Questions: Day 5
Chapters 26-31

31. There has been different onions on Ness’ writing style. How do you feel about his grammar and spelling? What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way?

I like it. It kind of reminds me of the style of Mark Twain. It’s powerful.

32. [Chapter 26] Todd thinks that Aaron purposefully stabbed him in a place that wouldn’t cause him to die. Do you think the location of the stabbing was significant? What about significance even in the placement it’s self (significance of being stabbed in the back)? What are your impressions of the song; especially the lines Don’t deceive me. Never left me. (symbolism? Foreshadowing?)?
I do think Todd’s thinking is right. If Aaron wanted him dead he would have killed him.

33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
It’s a traumatic event. Also it was very personal. He stabbed the poor thing to death. He felt that knife going into the flesh of it and would do that repeatedly. It’s way more personal that a gun or something that you shoot and don’t feel the impacts and resistance of it. It would traumatize me too.

34. In chapter 27 when Todd narrators in parentheses, who do you think he is talking to? For example when he has to sit it says: “… there comes a time when I can’t, when I just can’t, when my legs crumple beneath me and I have to sit down. I just have to. (I’m sorry.)” Why do you think the parentheses are used? Do you think it is important?
Oh, that’s a good question. I’m thinking it’s a talking to himself and an afterthought of it all.

35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?
It was the right choice. It doesn’t make him a coward. I think Aaron’s a coward.

36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?
I think the boy is himself. It’s his doubt. He’s going through some major life altering traumatic events.

37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
I was so sad by Manchee. He is what made the story and I’m so happy it was you that had to make this question and not me. I was like I don’t want to have to reread that part over again. It was so sad. My heart just sank. Aaron is a big bully. If I was in that situation I would have gotten rid of him a long time ago but that’s me. Todd is better than I am. I think it take great strength to keep Aaron alive.

38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the follow characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.
Todd- Innocence
Aaron- Misguided Insane
Manchee- happiness/loyal
Viola- conscience
Hildy- humor
Ben- knowledge
Wilf-kindness
Jane- curious

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments Day 6 DQs Chapters 32-37, pp.353-412

39. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?

Something’s not right. I’m not sure what it is but it’s not right.

40. Throughout the novel, gender roles seem to be at a forefront, what do you think about how gender roles play a part in Cabonel Downs? How do you think it relates to Farbranch and other settlements? What do you think the Author’s point is in making these distinctions? What implications do you think it will have for Todd and Viola going forward?
Honestly I think it’s the opposite of what we’d think. I’m thinking females are the strength but the men can’t let it be that way. They are afraid to let it go. So, they target the women.

41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
This isn’t a way of replacing Manchee. This is a way to inform us of something very important. He will reveal it to Todd. It’s odd how the men reacted to him.

42. We finally understand what happened in Prentisstown and to all the women, what are your initial reactions to this revelation? How do you think it compares now to the other towns as asked in question 40? Do you think Cabonel Downs could go the same way since they seem to have a similar thought process when it comes to “keeping men’s thoughts private”
As I stated I think the men were scared and that really the women are more apt to adapt to the world. It’s a safety thing too. I’m really surprised the women didn’t catch on more quickly to it.

43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
I can’t stand the religious undertones and if anything it’s making fun of religion. How misguided people can get and how they can use and abuse it.

44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
I think it’s wonderful she read the journal because he needed to know what was on his mother’s mind. It was all getting put together.

Chapters 38 - end

45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?

Yes, there is a lot of hope. We have more books in this series to read. ;)

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
I do think it’s important that he is learning to pick up on body language. The difference is he was born there and has learned from a baby how to communicate with the noise. The other’s that weren’t born there didn’t. It was too much of a change and it freaked them out. It’s showing that they can live together well and learn the styles of communication and how to quiet it.

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?
He is a determined man. He’s on a mission. It’s also what makes the book suspenseful. They need a bad guy.

48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?
Oh yes. Someone needed to kill him and I’m happy it was her to take that step because then she saved Todd from making Aaron do what he wanted to do.

49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?
It’s so messed up. I was like no. It’s a shame and I don’t know what will happen in the next book. I’m hoping Todd and Viola will run off and start their own settlement.

50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
I loved this book. It was a wonderful read and I will for sure continue on in the series. I will recommend it to the children I work with. :)

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments Day 6 DQs Chapters 32-37, pp.353-412

39. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?
It seemed nice until they went crazy on Ben. I suppose there's been 13 years of hatred towards Prentisstown though.

It seemed like Cabonel Downs put women as second class citizens because they couldn't hear their noise (i.e. they were untrustworthy or secretive) while Farbrach seemed to have all women as leaders maybe for the same reason (they were able to keep secrets).

41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
I'm surprised that Ben could have caught up with them. Since the army was right on their tales. That part seemed fairly unlikely. I think the law is a bit strange especially since you should be able to read their noise and see if they were guilty. Basically this way just left this bad thing to fester uninhibited.

I assumed this was the case since we met Viola so I wasn't surprised at all. Their reaction seems a bit harsh compared to actually finding out if Ben was a willing participant or not. It reminds me a bit of how American's can sometimes treat Muslims like they're all extremist terrorists when that obviously is a tiny portion and completely inaccurate.

43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
I think all religion seems to be fraught with people thinking their better than others or right just because of what they believe. I also believe there's a lot of assuming things about God just because that's what you want to believe is true.

44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
I thought it was cute that he wanted it read in a Prentisstown voice but also perhaps a bit creepy after what they just discovered. I still think Viola didn't deal with her parent's death at all, she seems strangely detached about that whole thing but maybe that's part of the difference between noise people and quiet people as the book is written. It makes her feel a bit cold though.

I feel like it's more poking at people who try to use religion to make themselves important rather than for the sake of their particular deity. They do the same thing with politics and the mayor where politicians are supposed to be representatives of the people but a lot of times they seem to end up doing things to benefit themselves instead of the populous. I think religious leaders can be the same way even sometimes when they don't know it. It's just ingrained in people to do things that benefit themselves so we can do it without knowing it.

What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way?

Well, I don't think his writing is brilliant, but probably does make it more difficult to stick to this voice.

33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?

Yes, it should be expected, he is guilty. I feel he made a grave error - huge.

34. In chapter 27 when Todd narrators in parentheses, who do you think he is talking to? For example when he has to sit it says: “… there comes a time when I can’t, when I just can’t, when my legs crumple beneath me and I have to sit down. I just have to. I don't know.

35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?

Yes - Todd is a coward at the wrong times, it is really frustrating actually.

36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?

I think he was somewhat delusional, but I think the boy was symbolic of another part of himself.

37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?

Yes, he is totally justified in killing this danger to society. So sad about Manchee, but I can see that this would happen. Another loss for Todd.

39. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?
It seems that everyone has their place. Men ruled everything and they were a little harsh on Ben but cared for their families except the women didn't have any input they just did household stuff and have children.

Cabonel Downs seem to be in the dark ages with treating the women as second class people where Farbranch was the opposite, the women ruled and Prentisstown at one time had a equal rules until everything changed. I think the author was trying to show that everyone should be equal and how the differences in the way others lived. I think this will help Todd and Viola to see each other as an equal and help each other through their journey.

41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
Maybe. I think Ben hid from the army since he knew it was coming and he found Todd by listening to the noise which told the story about them. Carbonel Downs reaction was fair since they heard all the bad things that went on there. The law should be changed because there is always people who aren't believers of Prentisstown's laws.

I think the men are a bunch of chickens and some are just plain crazy. I think the other towns are much better since they didn't consider killing what they can't understand or what is different. Cabonel Downs might go the same way. They don't want any of the women listening to their noise and that's probably why they play the music.

43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
I think its a little creepy the way they make it mean what they want it to mean. Aaron is crazy and twisted in the head. He actually believed that he would be some kind of saint or become reincarnated to some kind of god. He's nuts if he thinks that God has a purpose for him if he is murdered by Todd. I think something happened to Aaron for him to think that God talked to him. Like Todd said everyone would have heard the noise too and they didn't. So Aaron must have gone crazy or something happened.

44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
I think they are so cute. I like that they finally came to terms with they way they feel about each other and I think in the end they will have a strong partnership. I couldn't wait to see what was in the journal.

45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?
I hope so. It would really be terrible to go through this and not have the hope they need.

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
It was a great turning point. It's better to understand someone without having to hear their noise.

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?
Aaron is so hyped on being crazy that it keeps him going. It's like the Terminator who is determined to get what he wants.

48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?
Yes. I was good thing that the author had Viola kill Aaron so that he didn't get what he wanted and Viola got some kind of revenge for what he was doing to both of them.

49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?
When I saw this part I wanted to yell NO!!! How can the author do this? I'm hoping that there are some people left to help get rid of the army. I really don't know what is going to happen but can't wait to read the next book.

50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
I loved it and I will definitely continue the series. I am waiting for my reserve to come in.

45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?
Always need to have hope otherwise it's not worth doing anything.

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
I think it's interesting because he's one of the few who really hasn't ever lived without Noise. I imagine it's like kids who grow up with technology all of a sudden not having any. Or even us, being without internet for awhile makes us all twitchy :)

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?
Not sure, he kind of annoys me because he's so over the top crazy. I suppose it could be some weird rebirth immortality thing but I think it's more about Todd not actually being able to kill him.

48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?
Probably. She seems a lot stronger than Todd and better able to handle things. Though I wonder why they're so upset about it with Aaron trying to kill them all the time. The book makes it sound like they'd be such terrible people for killing him although to me it sounds really justified. It's not at all like murdering someone for leaving a town.

49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?
I suspect that Todd will try to escape and meet up with either other towns or those still on the space stations. Maybe Viola will do her contact thing in a few months.

50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
I liked it. Parts were a bit odd but overall enjoyable. I'll continue the series.

15) In chapter 13 we see that Viola is beginning to open up and speak to Todd. Do you see Todd's & Viola's relationship developing further? Would you like to see it develop? Do you think it is a healthy relationship? Why or why not?

Looks like they are stuck together for a while and I see them getting close.

16) Once Todd and Viola burn down the bridge they meet a woman by the name of Hildy. Hildy always calls Todd & Viola 'pup'. Why do you think she does this? Is it a term of endearment or something else?
I think it is a term of endearment, theirs is a community of farmers so it makes sense.

I don’t think Todd thought that far ahead yet but I believe that the seed of possibility of having a normal life with Noise has been planted.

My guess is (view spoiler)

19) Todd & Viola are on the run from the men of Prentisstown who happen to also be gathering an army to capture Todd. Why is it so important for the Prentisstown men to capture Todd? What threat, if any, does he pose for them?
There may be something in Todd’s mom’s journal that mayor doesn’t want getting out of Prentisstown. Or something having to do with new settlers.

20) When Matthew goes crazy he traps Todd & Manchee in the barn. Manchee really comes into his own here when he tries to protect Todd by biting Matthew. Matthew then responds by chopping off part of Manchee's tail with his machete. How did you feel when this happened?
I was really scared that Manchee will get badly hurt or worse. Got pups of my own which makes reading about violence against animals especially tough.

21) In light of the fact that Todd is only a young boy (12 years old) why is an army necessary to capture him? The only weapon he has is a knife so why can't he captured by one or two people rather than an army?
The 5 people set out to capture them earlier failed and now they have to go against a whole village. I suppose Mayor Prentiss didn’t want to take any more chances.

45. I thought that was a really touching part when she read the book to him in Ben's voice. I thought there was hope until I read the end
46. I think Todd realized that you can really know someone without hearing their Noise.
47. I don't know about symbolism but I'm getting really fed up with Aaron!
48. I must admit I got a bit bored with the fighting bit and skim read it. I'm glad he died but I didn't really care who did it.
49. It sort if feels like we've come all the way back to the beginning. Ben might still be alive.
50. It was a great read, very exciting but very depressing. I can't wait to read the next one!

I agree with you Kelly, I think the author's purpose was not to make fun of religion, but to show how it can be twisted, depending on the times. History is indicative of just this, religion has changed and evolved in so many ways since early civilization. I think the settlers came to New World for religious freedom, and found their faith tested, and out of fear and the lack of power felt by Aaron and even Mayor Prentiss, the religion turned into something that they felt could bring by the security and power they once had.

15) In chapter 13 we see that Viola is beginning to open up and speak to Todd. Do you see Todd's & Viola's relationship developing further? Would you like to see it develop? Do you think it is a healthy relationship? Why or why not?

-I do see Todd and Viola’s relationship developing. They are both together in a world of outsiders. I do think it is healthy because they will look out for one another. (view spoiler)

16) Once Todd and Viola burn down the bridge they meet a woman by the name of Hildy. Hildy always calls Todd & Viola 'pup'. Why do you think she does this? Is it a term of endearment or something else?

-I believe she uses it as a term of endearment and perhaps to show the kid’s youth. I thought it was funny she even called Manchee “pup pup”.

17) Todd expresses surprise when he discovers that Hildy is married "to a man with Noise". Why do you think he is so surprised? Tam is also able to quieten his Noise so that he is virtually 'normal'. Do you think that realizing this of Tam that Todd may feel it could be possible for him to also learn how to do the same thing with his Noise?

-I think everything about Farbranch surprises him because it is so different from where he grew up. Todd seems to look up to Tam and is in awe of how well he hides his noise. He is being asked to question everything he was brought up believing about the noise and women. That would have to mess with someone’s head.

18) When Viola & Todd arrive in Farbranch, Todd is initially pleasantly surprised by the calmness of the town people and how the Noise here is so different from Prentisstown. However, he soon discovers that the name Prentisstown turns these calm people into very angry people. Why do you think the name 'Prentisstown' has this affect on those in Farbranch?

-The town people have a very different recollection of the past. I think Todd was lied to about the past and perhaps Prentisstown has a shady past.

19) Todd & Viola are on the run from the men of Prentisstown who happen to also be gathering an army to capture Todd. Why is it so important for the Prentisstown men to capture Todd? What threat, if any, does he pose for them?
-He must be able to expose Prentisstown in one way or another, or else they wouldn’t be going to so much trouble to find him.

20) When Matthew goes crazy he traps Todd & Manchee in the barn. Manchee really comes into his own here when he tries to protect Todd by biting Matthew. Matthew then responds by chopping off part of Manchee's tail with his machete. How did you feel when this happened?
-I was worried Matthew hurt Manchee bad enough to kill him. Poor Manchee!

21) In light of the fact that Todd is only a young boy (12 years old) why is an army necessary to capture him? The only weapon he has is a knife so why can't he captured by one or two people rather than an army?
-They must be desperate to find him and stop him from doing whatever he is prophesized to do.

39. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?

At first it seemed very friendly and welcoming, until you noticed the segregation and disrespect toward women.

Farbranch had women leaders, Cabonel Downs suppressed the women. I wonder how Haven will treat women?

41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
I don't think Ben will replace Manchee. I don't know if it will be safe for him in Haven, so he may not go with them.
It is like the people of Prentisstown are in exile from the rest of the community. Keep the bad influence away. It's easier to execute one person who leaves than fight a whole town to wipe them out.

I think there are quite a few men who feel the same way as the Prentisstown mes, that is how the army keeps growing. I think the men in Carbonel Downs could go either way.

43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
There are religious undertones, but it's not a preachy book, more pointing out how corrupt and twisted religion can get.

44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
I don't want this to get romantic. I think it's about time that Todd got to hear some of the journal. I thought it was a vital bit of information and they should have been reading it together ages ago.

I don't know how they are still going with all that running all day, no food and no sleep for so much of the book.

45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?

Oh i loved it 2! It was about time! Viola should have read the book earlier! And i loved that she read it with an accent or "Todd's voice". I'm glad that it talked so much about hope. Maybe it will give them a little bit, now that all seems lost.

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
I think it does. It shows him that it's possible to know someone without the noise. Shows him how we "normals" do things =p it's a deeper connection that you end up having with people, than just being able to read their mind.

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?
OMG Aaron just die already! >_< i wonder if he is now truly dead, or if he shows up in the next book >_>

48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?
I think it was. Considering the army wanted Todd to kill someone - "if one falls, everyone falls" type of thing, I think that his innocense is what's going to save him in the end. Plus it would change him dramatically. He is afterall, the "boy that can't kill".

49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?
No clue. I can't believe the Mayor beat them to Haven! I can't believe Haven surrendered so easily!

50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
I liked the book. Wasn't crazy about it, but i liked it. It had a great story and good characters. I will definitely continue with the series.

45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?

At that point in the book, I did. Not so sure at the end.

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?

Hopefully. I think it will also help him maybe read others he comes in contact with throughout the rest of the story.

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?

I truly thought he had changed into some otherworldly being by the end. Seemed very improbable that he was still functioning with half of his face wide open.

48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?

I was fine with it, but I think that eventually Todd will have to kill someone judging by the tone and direction of the book.

49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?

Only because I read the teaser for the next book when I was trying to decide if I wanted to read it.

50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?

I thought the book was well written and fascinating. But I can't say I enjoyed it. The level of violence and death, losing Manchee, and the general hopeless feel of the end was too much for me. I won't continue the series--I'll just look for spoilers to find out what happened.

Corey (coreyhuffman) | 389 comments I agree with your final sentiments Kim. I really enjoyed the book, but I was a little annoyed with the ending, well most of the book actually. Too many odd surprises, the children were constantly being found and miraculously escaping each time. I don't understand how Haven could be so populated and on the cutting edge of technology for this settlement and yet just surrender to a bunch of thugs just like that.

I want to jump in on the next one as soon as possible as well, and hopefully the book lives up to its name because there are a lot of askings and I want some answers.

♦Ashley♦ (ascherger12gmailcom) | 1131 comments DQs for Part 4: Chapters 20 – 25

They were probably killed or escaped.

23. Do you think it is wise of Todd and Viola to choose not to go into any other settlement other than Haven, in case the army follows them and destroys it like they did in Farbranch? Also put into consideration about Cillian’s letter are warning to Farbranch.
It seems some of the towns aren’t taking their warnings seriously anyway.

Whatever Prentisstown’s past may be, it’s not good if everyone won’t even let the men come into their settlement. If Todd were innocent and not involved, or had no knowledge of Prentisstown’s past then perhaps he will be accepted into Haven. I absolutely think it has something to do with the absence of women in Prentisstown.

I think the army is after Todd to either join them or be killed.

26. Crickets that chirping “sex sex sex”, dogs that you can hear their thoughts and they can hear yours, giant cows saying “Here”, horses thinking “snake”. Do you think the Noise they hear is a universal language for anyone and everyone to understand?
I do think it is a universal language. Weather different species understand what the others are thinking is a different question.

27. We learn a little more about Aaron and his preaching of hellfire, damnanyshun, judgement, and end of the world? Why would he be preaching this is it’s a somewhat newish settlement?
Aaron wants everyone to conform to his beliefs.

28. Do you think Viola is right when she says that Todd that he has an army after him who wants to make him a killer? That if they can make him a killer they can make anyone a killer?
Yes, I believe Viola is right. I don’t think she gets the credit she deserves for her intelligence.

29. Todd and Voila meet a Spackle. The Spackle is skinning a fish and very scared by Todd and the knife. Todd kills him with the knife. What are your thoughts about this scene?
I was screaming for him to stop the whole time. He was conforming to Prentisstown’s idea for him. I thought there was going to be an attack on them both after the Spackle was killed.

30. Aaron has re-appeared. He knocks out Voila (I assume with something like chloroform) and knocks out Todd but before knocking out Todd says, “I have no further use for you, boy.” Any thoughts to what happens next?
Perhaps he knows Todd has killed now.

39. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?
Dr.Snow seemed very nice. At first I thought they would stay and rest for a while, but the more I learned about the town and their disregard for women I started to think they should keep moving

Every town seems to have their own idea of gender roles, just like different countries around the world have different ideas. If you were born into that way of thinking you don’t really know any better. Is it really some outsider’s responsibility to come in and tell you everything you’ve known your whole life is wrong? I’m interested to see was Haven will be like.

41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
I don’t think anyone can take Manchee’s place. I was heartbroken after that scene! Ben probably survived the same way Todd has: hiding, scavenging for food, lying about where he comes from. He found Todd by listening for his noise. It’s obvious everyone hates anyone from Prentisstown.

I wasn’t surprised by this revelation. I figured it had to be something bad for the whole town to be exiled. Perhaps it could come to that in Cabonel Downs. They’ve already segregated all the women, and they don’t listen to anything any woman has to say.

43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
Yes his religion is twisted. Look at all the different religions in our world, and the devastation caused when men and women fight in their god’s name. It really isn’t much different from the book.

44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
I hope they remain close friends or have a brother/sister type relationship. They are only 12, but then I think of the world they live in and that one is considered a grown adult at the age of 13. I’ve been dying for them to read the journal!!

SthTx Dawn (dawn99) | 226 comments 39. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town? I can see why the men might want to separate themselves from the women..seeing as the men can't hear their thoughts and the women can hear theirs..awkward. But I didn't like the sexist slant this part took..would have been interesting if the women's roles weren't so 'traditional'

Farbranch - Women in leadership roles, respected, treated as equals, the happiest of the three known societies so far

Carbonel Downs - Women are inferior to men, but treated civilly in society, traditional roles assigned to men and women

Prentisstown - women killed..least happy society, no wonder they want to kill people..

I think Todd and Viola's relationship so far has been one of mutual strength and companionship. They both depend on each other and view each as equal to each other.

41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving? I don't think Ben is a replacement for Manchee, but I think he serves to show Todd and Viola (and the reader) how the New World treats the adult men of Prentisstown. (view spoiler) I think the law concerning leaving Prentisstown is for the outside world's protection.

42. We finally understand what happened in Prentisstown and to all the women, what are your initial reactions to this revelation? How do you think it compares now to the other towns as asked in question 40? Do you think Cabonel Downs could go the same way since they seem to have a similar thought process when it comes to “keeping men’s thoughts private” Hmm...good question, I hadn't thought about it in that way, but now that you mention it I think maybe so. Carbonel Downs has separated the women and that can only lead to mistrust and anger.

43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World? I think the author is using religious fanaticism as a means to move the story, but I'm not sure what other statement he is trying to make.

44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal? I think they make a great pair..they are great partners and compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses.

SthTx Dawn (dawn99) | 226 comments 45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?

I think this was the perfect message for Todd and Viola during their long arduous journey. I hope they listen to Todd's mother's advice.

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?

I loved this part...Todd's awareness of Viola tells us that the Noise is just that..Noise.. Noise can lie, but what Todd understands about Viola and vice versa is true

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?

Aaron is good at being a bad guy, but man am I ready for him to be gone! Aaron's persistence shows us that whatever trials Todd and Viola go through, it's not going to be easy.

48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron? I think it was important that Todd didn't kill Aaron, and Viola understood that. (view spoiler)

49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book? Arghh..so frustrating with the cliff hanger ending..

While I didn't like the end of the book..I enjoyed it as a whole, and grudgingly (because I don't like cliff hanger type books) will continue ..Excellent book overall just wish the author could have found a way to have a conclusion to the book.

I was glad to finally get a glimpse of the diary. Without hope I don’t think Todd and Viola could have continued on for as long as they did.

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
Yes it’s a definite turning point. He is learning how to read people through actions and body language instead of listening to their thoughts.

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?
I said this in the beginning, but he reminds me of one of those horror movie villains that keeps coming back for the sequel, the next movie, and the next…

I was hoping she would be the one to kill him.

I was hoping for a more satisfying ending. Guess I’ll have to read the next book.

50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
I have a few other books already lined up for December, but my goal for January is to finish up some of the series I left unfinished

45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?

With an end like this it would appear hope is the only thing left, because there sure isn’t much else!
I liked the diary scene too. I wish they’d got to it sooner, but I also understand that Todd might not have handled it too well if he read it earlier.

46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
Absolutely. I think of all character growth Todd experienced in the book this new awareness of his is my favorite.

47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?
Yeah, how very action movie cliché! :) I guess the author had been putting their last fight off until after Todd finally started seeing himself as a man.

48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?
It would’ve been ok with me if Todd was the one to finish him off. Letting go off one’s innocence for the right reasons and in right circumstances is I believe a necessary way to go sometimes. But on the other hand that would have been exactly what Aaron wanted him to do.

49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?
I was surprised by the sudden surrender, I hope next book explains why they didn’t put up a fight. I would be interested in seeing people opposing Mayor Prentiss teaming up with indigenous population of the planet to fight together. Also the planet has an unusual ecosystem and I’d like to have it explored more in the next book.

50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
I enjoyed it a lot and would like to continue. There were some surprising twists and some predictable ones but overall I thought this was a great read.
