The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking #1), by Patrick Ness, Young Adult BOM, Start Date November 22, 2014
- Day 3 - Chps 13-1915) In chapter 13 we see that Viola is beginning to open up and speak to Todd. Do you see Todd's & Viola's relationship developing further? Would you like to see it develop? Do you think it is a healthy relationship? Why or why not?
Yes I think is already is developing. Yes I think it is healthy.
16) Once Todd and Viola burn down the bridge they meet a woman by the name of Hildy. Hildy always calls Todd & Viola 'pup'. Why do you think she does this? Is it a term of endearment or something else?
I think a term of endearment.
17) Todd expresses surprise when he discovers that Hildy is married "to a man with Noise". Why do you think he is so surprised? Tam is also able to quieten his Noise so that he is virtually 'normal'. Do you think that realising this of Tam that Todd may feel it could be possible for him to also learn how to do the same thing with his Noise?
Yes, I do, if he actually gets a minute to think about it. But it is all survival at this point, but it sounds like it is something that takes skill and practice.
18) When Viola & Todd arrive in Farbranch, Todd is initially pleasantly surprised by the calmness of the towns people and how the Noise here is so different from Prentisstown. However, he soon discovers that the name Prentisstown turns these calm people into very angry people. Why do you think the name 'Prentisstown' has this affect on those in Farbranch?
There is some history here I am waiting to learn about. So many secrets.
19) Todd & Viola are on the run from the men of Prentisstown who happen to also be gathering an army to capture Todd. Why is it so important for the Prentisstown men to capture Todd? What threat, if any, does he pose for them?
See my last answer.
20) When Matthew goes crazy he traps Todd & Manchee in the barn. Manchee really comes into his own here when he tries to protect Todd by biting Matthew. Matthew then responds by chopping off part of Manchee's tail with his machete. How did you feel when this happened?
I was glad he didn't kill him. I mean we chop off certain breeds tail just for show - so Manchee will be all right.
21) In light of the fact that Todd is only a young boy (12 years old) why is an army necessary to capture him? The only weapon he has is a knife so why can't he captured by one or two people rather than an army?
Yeah, I really don't get why Todd is so important. Maybe what he can share with the other settlements about Printisstown will put the town in danger.
Daily Questions: Day 5Chapters 26-31
31. There has been different onions on Ness’ writing style. How do you feel about his grammar and spelling? What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way?
I like some of the graphics that convey noise. I think they add to it. I'm not real fond of the random mispellings since they seem just infrequent enough to not really be how someone would talk. It seems strange that they'd have perfect English except for some random common words.
32. [Chapter 26] Todd thinks that Aaron purposefully stabbed him in a place that wouldn’t cause him to die. Do you think the location of the stabbing was significant? What about significance even in the placement it’s self (significance of being stabbed in the back)? What are your impressions of the song; especially the lines Don’t deceive me. Never left me. (symbolism? Foreshadowing?)?
Maybe they still need him for something but they're trying to make him crazy.
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
I think the fever is making things worse and making him see things. Without all the other stuff going on he'd probably be able to come to a conclusion on how he feels about the Spackle.
34. In chapter 27 when Todd narrators in parentheses, who do you think he is talking to? For example when he has to sit it says: “… there comes a time when I can’t, when I just can’t, when my legs crumple beneath me and I have to sit down. I just have to. (I’m sorry.)” Why do you think the parentheses are used? Do you think it is important?
I'm thinking maybe it's the boy he was talking to later that I assume was his cowardice.
35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?
I think it just makes him a pacifist.
36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?
I think it was his cowardice (see above). Since he left him behind when he went to try to rescue Viola
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
It seems like in each section Todd almost dies and falls into unconsciousness.
38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the follow characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.
Todd- Young
Aaron- Crazy
Manchee- Loyal
Viola- Motivated
Hildy- Wise
Ben- Kind
Wilf- Wise
Jane- Nice
Daily Questions: Day 5Chapters 26-31
31. There has been different onions on Ness’ writing style. How do you feel about his grammar and spelling? What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way?
It annoyed me for the first few chapters but then became what seemed to be a natural side effect of Todd's character. I think it takes more skill to write this way because it isn't a natural thing to do.
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
This scene tore me up inside! It made me a little mad at the author because I didn't think it needed to happen that way and I wanted to continue to see Manchee throughout the book and the series. It did make me contemplate the balancing of human life against animal life. Todd obviously chose to value the human life of someone he barely knows over the life of his beloved, loyal dog. Or perhaps he thought/knew that even if he went back, he would potentially just be putting them all in danger of being killed. I don't know, but this part definitely brought tears to my eyes
31. There has been different onions on Ness’ writing style. How do you feel about his grammar and spelling? What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way? I dont mind the grammar and spelling, I guess he uses it to show that Todd is uneducated. As for skill I think a writer embodies his characters and so when he wrote Todd's speech he was seeing in his mind him actually saying it. And it wouldnt have been hard to at the end of the book was to do a search for "tion" and change it to "shun" to make sure he hadnt missed any.32. Good point about the significance of stabbing in the back I hadnt thought of it that way. I dont think Aaron was trying to kill him instantly just make him suffer and die slowly.
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all? Im glad hes thinking like that I understand his actions although dont approve of them and it shows compassion and goodness that he is remorseful
Hes alone apart from Manchee and hes voicing out loud his thoughts as if Viola were there I think. Also he is delirious from hunger, thirst and pain so is a little crazy.
35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward? No it doesnt make him a coward. His plan was a good one.
36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything? It was an internal battle of his good side and bad side seen through his delirium.
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable? That was so upsetting Im actually going to have to put the book down for a bit before picking it up again. Manchee just saying "Todd?" was heartbreaking. Before Manchee dying Todd was just trying to survive now its different Aaron has taken away part of his family so I believe Todd wont have a problem with killing Aaron now.
38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the follow characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.
Todd- Honorable
Aaron- sinful
Manchee-Devoted
Viola- Smart
Hildy- Wise
Ben- Kind hearted
Wilf- Calm
Jane- Cuckoo
31. I don't mind the grammar and spelling. I think the author is using Todd's grammar and spelling to reinforce the idea he has only limited schooling. Some skills or editing is required to keep the characters voices consistent.
32. The significance of stabbing Todd in the back may be a reminder that Todd abandoned Printissetown.
33. Todd was always taught the Spackle were dangerous so he neglected to see the fear the Spackle exhibited.
34. the talk in parenthesis may be showing the beginning of Todd losing connection with the world around him.
35. Todd realized he couldn't kill Aaron without losing himself and Viola. Finding another way besides murder to rescue Viola is not cowardice.
36. Todd began talking to his conscience (the boy).
37. I expected either Viola or Manchee would have to be sacrificed. I was not surprised by Manchee's fate. Todd loved his dog and his dog was brave, Todd will remember Manchee always. Todd knows Aaron is crazy so Aaron's killing of Manchee does not justify killing Aaron.
Todd - tenacious
Aaron - crazy
Manchee - brave
Viola - strong
Hildy - wise
Ben - kind
Wilf - brave
Jane - loony
Regarding part 4 - can I just say I am finding Todd quite stupid and annoying. Actually right now I wouldn't care if someone killed him - that is how much the author has made me care about the MC. (view spoiler)
DQs for Part 4: Chapters 20 – 2522. Prentisstown men are marching and kicking down door in Farbranch. Todd goes through the list of men he sees and notices Ben and Cillian aren’t there. He says, “If they ain’t there, then that means once and for all. And there’s yer lesson. There ain’t nothing good that don’t got real bad waiting to follow it.” Why do you think Ben and Cillian are absent from the group?
I don't know, but I am not convinced they are dead.
23. Do you think it is wise of Todd and Viola to choose not to go into any other settlement other than Haven, in case the army follows them and destroys it like they did in Farbranch? Also put into consideration about Cillian’s letter are warning to Farbranch.
I think they used pretty good logic, it could create noise that might lead the army to them, but I also think everyone needs to be warned.
24. The book. As Viola reads the letter from Cillian in Todd’s mother’s book, “There are things you don’t know about our history, Todd, and I’m sorry for that but if you knew them you would be in great danger. The only chance you have of a welcome is yer innocence.” What mysteries do you think has happened in their history? Why would his innocence be his only chance? Do you think it has anything to do with no women/girls especially since there are women in other settlements?
I think they are just horrible people, period.
25. Also, in the letter from Cillian it states, “the wider world has to be warned, Todd. Prentisstown is on the move. The plan has been in the works for years, only waiting for the last boy in Prentisstown to become a man.” Do you still think the army is after Todd? Why doesn’t the wider world need to be warned?
Yes, everyone needs to be warned, I think they want to take over.
26. Crickets that chirping “sex sex sex”, dogs that you can hear their thoughts and they can hear yours, giant cows saying “Here”, horses thinking “snake”. Do you think the Noise they hear is a universal language for anyone and everyone to understand?
Yes
27. We learn a little more about Aaron and his preaching of hellfire, damnanyshun, judgement, and end of the world? Why would he be preaching this is it’s a somewhat newish settlement?
Because he is a freak.
28. Do you think Viola is right when she says that Todd that he has an army after him who wants to make him a killer? That if they can make him a killer they can make anyone a killer?
I wasn't sure about all that. I do think there is a cult like dynamic in this structure in Prisstown and are relying on people being brainwashed.
29. Todd and Voila meet a Spackle. The Spackle is skinning a fish and very scared by Todd and the knife. Todd kills him with the knife. What are your thoughts about this scene?
Kill Todd back. He is an idiot.
30. Aaron has re-appeared. He knocks out Voila (I assume with something like chloroform) and knocks out Todd but before knocking out Todd says, “I have no further use for you, boy.” Any thoughts to what happens next?
No
Day 2 - Chapters 7-12 - DQs6. So the "quiet" was a girl. She's wearing clothes similar to Todd's but newer. So much newer, they look like a uniform. When I first read this part my immediate thought was that perhaps that was the big secret -- the women/girls hadn't all died, but instead might be sequestered somewhere else like a concentration camp? What were your initial thoughts about the girl & where she might have come from?
Not sure where she came from. Maybe she is immune and on the run.
7. How in the world did Aaron survive being drug off by a crocodile? His Noise is louder and crazier than everyone else's. I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't more to Aaron. Any thoughts on where Aaron might fit in? I don't think I believe he is truly dead. What do you think? Will we be seeing more of him in the future?
I don't like Aaron, I hope he is dead now.
8. Aaron referred to the girl as "The Holy Sacrament", "The Sign from God", and "The Path of the Saint". He also pictured the girl drinking wine and partaking of the host. These all seem to have significant Catholic undertones. What part do you think religion might play as the novel continues?
I don't think the book will get preachy, but I think Aaron and Prentisstowns beliefs will influence things.
9. Aaron ultimately envisioned the girl being sacrificed. Could that be the big secret? Do you think that is what happened to all the women/girls?
I don't think they all died from the noise virus. They may have been sacrificed though or escaped.
10. The air ship, and the surrounding greenery, seem to be still smoking making it seem the crash just happened -- or at least not that long ago. They haven't gone that far from the outskirts of Prentisstown. You would think somebody saw or heard something. Could that be why Aaron was spending so much time in the swamp? Do you think the kids are in more danger than just people looking for Todd? I think they are looking for her, and anyone else who was on the ship.
11. The girl seems to not react like you would think she would if the dead couple were in fact her parents. Does anyone else think that there is going to be more to the girl's story? Something that's going to be revealed later -- a big prophecy perhaps, or somehow she's the pivotal point in some larger story?
She is acting very strange. I wonder if she is mute? If she spoke another language surely she would try to say something.
12. The descriptions of the Mayor and his circle in the first chapters were very reminiscent of societies usually portrayed in dystopian novels. Those novels however are usually set many years into that society -- after the society is fully formed, complete control, a supreme ruler -- this seems to be how you would imagine one of those societies would begin: burning books, outlawing school, etc. Do you think their break-off settlement could have been from a larger similar society?
Not sure, but they seem to have been living like that for years.
13. There have been slight references to the world they inhabit that mark it as different from ours. Two moons. The cassor (bird like creatures). The Spackle. Have you noticed any other different traits?
Seems very Earth like. Can't think of any at the moment.
14. Manchee makes me think of Oberon from the Iron Druid Chronicles, although with a bit less vocabulary. While it might, on occasion, be fun to hear what an animal is thinking, I don't think I would want it to be constant influx. The girl at first didn't seem to be able to hear the Noise, she also hasn't spoken. Why do you think she hasn't tried to communicate in any way verbally with Todd?
I haven't read Iron Druid Chronicles.
Maybe she is mute or still in shock from the crash.
DQs - Day 3 - Chps 13-1915) In chapter 13 we see that Viola is beginning to open up and speak to Todd. Do you see Todd's & Viola's relationship developing further? Would you like to see it develop? Do you think it is a healthy relationship? Why or why not?
I think they will become friends and continue to travel together, but I hope it doesn't turn romantic yet, they are too young for that.
16) Once Todd and Viola burn down the bridge they meet a woman by the name of Hildy. Hildy always calls Todd & Viola 'pup'. Why do you think she does this? Is it a term of endearment or something else?
I think that is her word for child.
17) Todd expresses surprise when he discovers that Hildy is married "to a man with Noise". Why do you think he is so surprised? Tam is also able to quieten his Noise so that he is virtually 'normal'. Do you think that realising this of Tam that Todd may feel it could be possible for him to also learn how to do the same thing with his Noise?
yes, though it will take a lot of practice.
Bad blood between the towns. I think there was war between them before Todd was born or when he was very young. Prentiss sounds like a surname, so I think a dictator called Prentiss took over the town.
19) Todd & Viola are on the run from the men of Prentisstown who happen to also be gathering an army to capture Todd. Why is it so important for the Prentisstown men to capture Todd? What threat, if any, does he pose for them?
Maybe they found out that Todd has his Mother's book, and there are secrets in there they don't want anyone to know.
20) When Matthew goes crazy he traps Todd & Manchee in the barn. Manchee really comes into his own here when he tries to protect Todd by biting Matthew. Matthew then responds by chopping off part of Manchee's tail with his machete. How did you feel when this happened?
I was so relieved when I realised it was just his tail. i thought he was going to die. So many book's I have read lately have killed off major characters, no one is safe anymore.
21) In light of the fact that Todd is only a young boy (12 years old) why is an army necessary to capture him? The only weapon he has is a knife so why can't he captured by one or two people rather than an army?
He has already escaped Aaron twice. They know he has made it to Farbranch, so maybe they plan to wipe out the whole town. Todd's mother's book and the note said to warn them We don't know what about yet, but maybe it's something that Prentisstown doesn't want to get out.
I think they were killed by the men of Prentisstown
23. Do you think it is wise of Todd and Viola to choose not to go into any other settlement other than Haven, in case the army follows them and destroys it like they did in Farbranch? Also put into consideration about Cillian’s letter are warning to Farbranch.
I think it is wise as they're trying to protect others.
I wasn't really sure at this point. It was a total mystery to me.
I thought the town was after Todd. I think the wider world does need to be warned as Prentisstown sounds like bad news.
26. Crickets that chirping “sex sex sex”, dogs that you can hear their thoughts and they can hear yours, giant cows saying “Here”, horses thinking “snake”. Do you think the Noise they hear is a universal language for anyone and everyone to understand?
I'm not sure. Some of the comments from the animals seem really strange and unusual.
27. We learn a little more about Aaron and his preaching of hellfire, damnanyshun, judgement, and end of the world? Why would he be preaching this is it’s a somewhat newish settlement?
Because Aaron is totally insane.
28. Do you think Viola is right when she says that Todd that he has an army after him who wants to make him a killer? That if they can make him a killer they can make anyone a killer?
I wouldn't be surprised.
29. Todd and Voila meet a Spackle. The Spackle is skinning a fish and very scared by Todd and the knife. Todd kills him with the knife. What are your thoughts about this scene?
I felt sorry for both Todd and the Spackle. The Spackle was minding its own business but because Todd had been brainwashed toward the Spackle for so long he couldn't think straight so he panicked and responded accordingly.
30. Aaron has re-appeared. He knocks out Voila (I assume with something like chloroform) and knocks out Todd but before knocking out Todd says, “I have no further use for you, boy.” Any thoughts to what happens next?
Aaron kills Viola so he could, metaphorically speaking, turn a knife around in Todd to make him bend to the will of Prentisstown.
I found Ness's writing difficult to get my head around at first. However, I began to realise that this style of writing was intentional; designed to illustrate that Todd was essentially illiterate and as such his grasp of how words were spelt was extremely poor. I think this enhanced Ness's writing and yes I think it takes skill, and a great deal of concentration, to spell words incorrectly when you can spell properly.
I never really thought whether there was any significance with the stabbing other than that Aaron was totally insane and was probably quite likely to do what he did. I'm not really sure of the significance of the song.
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
I think he responded the way he did because he shocked himself at his ability to be able to kill at all. I felt sorry for him and it didn't lighten the shock of the kill itself at all for me.
I'm not sure.
35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?
I think it is a harder thing to not kill someone when every fibre in your body pulls you to do that.
36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?
This was a bit strange for me. I didn't really understand this part.
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
I was very sad when Manchee died. By this stage Todd had really grown to love Manchee and so I thought it would really affect Todd because he had lost a loyal friend and companion. I don't think killing anyone is justifiable however, I really did wonder if Aaron was able to be killed as he seemed to keep resurrecting himself.
38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the following characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.
Todd - determined
Aaron - insane!!!
Manchee - loyal
Viola - patient
Hildy - dependable
Ben - protective
Wilf - trust-worthy
Jane - supportive
What an abrupt ending!!! Wasn't expecting this, I have to admit! But a novel isn't supposed to end like this! :(You're right Caron, I HAVE TO read the second book ASAP!
Day 6 DQs Chapters 32-37, pp.353-41239. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?
40. Throughout the novel, gender roles seem to be at a forefront, what do you think about how gender roles play a part in Cabonel Downs? How do you think it relates to Farbranch and other settlements? What do you think the Author’s point is in making these distinctions? What implications do you think it will have for Todd and Viola going forward?
41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
42. We finally understand what happened in Prentisstown and to all the women, what are your initial reactions to this revelation? How do you think it compares now to the other towns as asked in question 40? Do you think Cabonel Downs could go the same way since they seem to have a similar thought process when it comes to “keeping men’s thoughts private”
43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
Sarah wrote: "Regarding part 4 - "I felt the same way at that point but I feel like Todd redeems himself at the end of the book.
Vinny wrote: "What an abrupt ending!!! Wasn't expecting this, I have to admit! But a novel isn't supposed to end like this! :(You're right Caron, I HAVE TO read the second book ASAP!"
THANK YOU!
Stacie wrote: "Vinny wrote: "What an abrupt ending!!! Wasn't expecting this, I have to admit! But a novel isn't supposed to end like this! :(You're right Caron, I HAVE TO read the second book ASAP!"
THANK YOU!"
I was in shock. I love unpredictable books. My currently reading list is too filled to start the second book right now, but as soon as the new year starts I'm going to find out what happens.
Day 6 DQs Chapters 32-37, pp.353-41239. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?
I was wondering too what the music was that Todd kept hearing. But then Viola explained. I couldn't bring myself to trust Dr. Snow. Sorry but my mind kept drifting off to President Snow. Anyway, Dr. Snow seemed secretive. Sincere was what Todd thought. But I learned that you can't trust too many people in New World.
I hated how they treated women. They kept shutting Viola up, telling her that it wasn't the time for a woman to be talking. With Farbranch, given that Francia was the deputy mayor and people listened to Hildy, I'd say that the opposite was true. Todd stood up for Viola so at least that was good. I don't think people's view on women would change much. We find out that they killed all the women in Prentisstown. What would make Viola special for her to remain alive?
41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
I think Todd needed the extra guidance. The reassurance that he was doing the right thing. The poor boy was doubting himself. Ben was just what he needed. I hate that law. I mentioned in a previous comment that I think the Mayor wanted total control and now i see he believes 'If you're not with us, you're against us. Stand by our side or die'.
The few men that wanted to protect the women gave me hope that not everyone in the town had a one track mind. The others, as Ben said, they couldn't trust. Everybody knew the men's thoughts, but couldn't know what the women were thinking. They did keep the women separate in Cabonel Downs so I think that's slightly better than killing them off.
43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
Well Aaron thinks he's Metatron. So that's all crazy speak. I think Aaron was sane once, then Mayor Prentiss took charge and from then on Aaron seemed to want to tell others what God wanted. So yea, crazy is what I think drove him.
44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
I find their friendship a good thing for each of them. They're both running and with where Todd comes from, no one trusts him and people are trying to kill him. They are basically alone in this world. I was looking forward to the journal. (I read till the end so that part's done for me) They're journey to the point where they are now though, as been rough but I'm glad they had each other.

Same here! I've already signed up for a few buddy reads and challenges so can't start the second book immediately. But I'm pretty impatient about it.
Stacie wrote: "Vinny wrote: "What an abrupt ending!!! Wasn't expecting this, I have to admit! But a novel isn't supposed to end like this! :(You're right Caron, I HAVE TO read the second book ASAP!"

Why are you thanking me, Stacie? *confused look*
Day 6 DQs Chapters 32-37, pp.353-41239. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?
It's just another settlement, that's what I think initially but probably better off than Farbranch and a few other poverty-stricken settlements that Todd and Viola passed on their way to Haven. And Doctor Snow's helpful nature makes it seem like the people are of good nature. I was curious about the Eldermen and wish it was explored a little more!
The idea of playing a continuous music to conceal the Noise was a good idea, I guess! :D
The treatment towards women in Carbonel Downs and Farbranch was exact opposite! I hated how they kept all the women outside the main territory of the town and used them only for daily chores in CD (remember how they kept shutting Viola up when she tried to warn them about the army and kept calling her little girl?), whereas in Farbrach women were treated quite respectfully- Francia was the Mayor there and people obeyed Hildy too!
As it is clarified afterward, most of then men were simply jealous of the women since the Noise germ wouldn't affect them and they could listen to the thought of men without revealing their own! Must have hurt their male ego or whatever it is. Bleh! That's the whole point of showing the distinction. It shows how some of the men treated women with respect (in Farbranch), some shut women out from the so-called society (in Carbonel Downs) and while some murdered them brutally (Prentisstown of course!).
41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
As I've said earlier, I knew Ben would be back, at some point or the other. He had to be back. Because Todd had questions for him. As for his survival, it's a little hard to accept that he overcame all the obstacles and reached to Todd-but then we have seen how Aaron survives in the story time and again, eh? In comparison this is acceptable. :P
Obviously, the residents of CD weren't happy to see a man from Prentisstown arriving in their settlement. The reaction was obvious.
The Law is quite justifiable, I think. The beasts that Mr. Prentiss and his supporters were deserved no better treatment. Since the people of other settlements didn't want a war, isolation was the best way to keep the Prentisstown men away. So I won't say the law was unjust. (But of course not everyone from Prentisstown deserved it)
My reaction- Are these people even human? No they aren't. They are filthy creatures! I was angry.
However the other settlements treated women, those were better than Prentisstown. Even in Carbonel Downs. At least they weren't acting like butchers!
43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
He is a pathetic psychopath. There's no other way to describe him. The idea of 'A man is killed and a new man is born" is sick. It was the Mayor's idea primarily I guess. Aaron was just this insane person who wanted to attain martyrdom though what he thought was a 'sacrifice'. Moron! And it was good for the Mayor too as Aaron got along with his ideologies.
44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
Yes, yes! Their relationship is one of the best things about the book - the author draws the picture of the gradual growing of their relationship really well! :) I love the part when Todd says that "I can read her." It was heartwarming. ^_^
Yes, of course! It was great to see Viola reading out Todd's mother's journal for him.
So, I am pretty late in starting this one, but I am hoping to finish it today. Its been difficult not to read everyone's comments as I don't want to ruin it. So I'll start with the questions and see how I get on.I do have to admit, the spelling/language really put me off to start. I thought 'urgh, I am never going to be able to read this' but actually, now that I have got used to it I am managing OK. Anyway...
1) The Book starts with introducing this concept of the Noise and Todd can hear his dog's thoughts. Todd does not seem to like his dog. How do you think this relationship might develop? Do you think Todd will grow to feel differently about his dog? Do you think the relationship might grow and change?
I love Manchee already, and I have a feeling that the relationship between Todd and his dog is going to improve as time goes on. Manchee seems like he will be very loyal. I just love how he is written though. I can just imagine that would be exactly the thoughts of a dog. Putting a question mark at the end of each of his comments is perfect too.
2) We have learned that Todd is the only remaining boy in his town, everyone else has moved on to manhood, at 13 years old. There seems to be some secret initiation, secrets that the boys are kept from that are revealed when they become men. Why do you think this might be?
I couldn't even hazard a guess. It seems odd that although Todd is the only boy left, no-one has yet let slip what it might be. I can't imagine it will be very pleasant though.
3) Aaron was defenitely introduced as an ominous character from the jump. It was strange that he was in the marsh when Todd was and kind of popped up out of nowhere. What do you think Aaron was up to? Do you think he knew about the girl or the absence of noise?
I think he did and he was trying to either hide it or stop it. Aaron strikes me as the kind of religious fanatic who gains power from everything staying the same. The absence of noise means change which would be a threat to Aaron, not to mention the girl. I suspect he will do everything he can to destroy it.
4) I was getting a little concerned when Ben and Cillian were trying to get Todd the hell out of dodge and Todd was being so resistant. What were you feelings around this.
I found myself getting really annoyed with Todd. He was being so difficult when it was obvious that Ben and Cillian were looking to do it for his own good.
5) I was wondering if women/girls don't hear the Noise and if that has something to do with why they are all gone. When Todd finds the absence of Noise he doesn't find a Spackle, (whatever that is?) but he finds a girl. Any speculation about this?
I think the germ which brought the Noise about works only on men. Although there were indications that it was the same germ that killed all the women, it may not be that. I am going to have to keep reading to find out, as I am definitely curious.
Glad to see I'm not the only one starting late! I began reading last night and want to try and finish over the weekend. DQs for Part I - Chapters 1-6
1) The Book starts with introducing this concept of the Noise and Todd can hear his dog's thoughts. Todd does not seem to like his dog. How do you think this relationship might develop? Do you think Todd will grow to feel differently about his dog? Do you think the relationship might grow and change?
I think Todd is going to grow attached to Manchee as their journeys goes on; Manchee is an intelligent dog who’s not just driven by instinct, and he’s Todd’s only familiar face in the world that is turning out to be not at all what he thought.
2) We have learned that Todd is the only remaining boy in his town, everyone else has moved on to manhood, at 13 years old. There seems to be some secret initiation, secrets that the boys are kept from that are revealed when they become men. Why do you think this might be?
I can’t imagine, but must be pretty bad if making Todd go out into the unknown wilderness alone is a lesser evil.
3) Aaron was defenitely introduced as an ominous character from the jump. It was strange that he was in the marsh when Todd was and kind of popped up out of nowhere. What do you think Aaron was up to? Do you think he knew about the girl or the absence of noise?
Aaron was hiding something for sure. Perhaps he knew that a female was the cause of Quiet but hadn’t found the actual girl yet and was looking when Todd stumbled on him.
4) I was getting a little concerned when Ben and Cillian were trying to get Todd the hell out of dodge and Todd was being so resistant. What were you feelings around this.
I was feeling the same way. It was obvious he was going to make it out somehow, otherwise there wouldn’t be a book, but I was on the edge of my seat nonetheless. And I’m really concerned about Ben and Cillian now.
5) I was wondering if women/girls don't hear the Noise and if that has something to do with why they are all gone. When Todd finds the absence of Noise he doesn't find a Spackle, (whatever that is?) but he finds a girl. Any speculation about this?
I was thinking something similar, maybe they absorb the Noise? I was also thinking about that mysterious germ, was it result of an experiment gone wrong? We know how it affects men, so could it be that its effect on women is so devastating that it’s easier to declare them dead? Todd mentioned “evolushyn”, looks like science and learning are not entirely forgotten in this new world. Can’t wait to learn some more.

I too agree with you and well said...
Vinny wrote: "What an abrupt ending!!! Wasn't expecting this, I have to admit! But a novel isn't supposed to end like this! :(You're right Caron, I HAVE TO read the second book ASAP!"
Now I really want to get to the end ASAP and see what is going on...I got this from the library in ebook format as a trilogy so thankfully I wont have to wait to get #2
31. There has been different onions on Ness’ writing style. How do you feel about his grammar and spelling? What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way? The shorthand really bothers me. Sometimes, I have to read the word aloud to figure out what it is supposed to be. Also, reading the word "yer" is cringe-worthy. That being said, I know that Ness is doing it to characterize Todd and the town as a hole. I think it can be used in an interesting way, like if it gets better and better with the series to reflect Todd's growth. Though I find it annoying, I think Ness took a risk and I can respect that.
Never leave me. (symbolism? Foreshadowing?)?
I do think the stabbing in the back is a big deal. It could have been on the arm, or leg, or hand but instead it was the back. I think this symbolizes the town turning on him and such. I really like the song, especially since it came from Todd's mom. I'm not sure what it means at this point, but I'm hoping the idea behind it- the loyalty it promotes- is something that is changing Todd. Already, we can see how he has grown and changed into a person who looks out for others rather than himself.
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
I'm glad that he is still rethinking it over and over. If he had just moved on, it would show that he doesn't care. So this is helping redeem him in my eyes.
I'm wondering who Todd is supposed to be telling this story to. It seems like it is just his own personal narrative. I have two theories. The first is that he the () signify interjections. Like in the moment he wasn't thinking about it, but now as he rethinking the story he is adding them in, or maybe he just didn't know what he was feeling. My second idea is that it's his thoughts, and the sounds that would be heard to those around him.
35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?
I think it makes him brave. Killing, which he had down in the past, has had a big effect on him. I like that he doesn't just want to talk it into his own hands.
36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?
I agree with other people. (:
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
I was so very sad about Manchee's death. I think the fact that Todd was so heartless in killing Manchee he sealed his fate. He has to die, no question. Also, Manchee thinking "Todd" over and over was heart breaking.
38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the follow characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.
Todd- Stubborn
Aaron- Heartless
Manchee- Curious
Viola- analytical
Hildy- Annoying

Daily Questions: Day 5Chapters 26-31
31. There has been different onions on Ness’ writing style. How do you feel about his grammar and spelling? What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way?
I find it interesting. I keep getting the feel of the Wild West not sure that has anything to do with the language.
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
I was thinking if he was raised to hate the Spackles and believed that because of them they caused the deaths of his family, then I guess I could see why he was so ready to kill the Spackle
34. In chapter 27 when Todd narrators in parentheses, who do you think he is talking to? For example when he has to sit it says: “… there comes a time when I can’t, when I just can’t, when my legs crumple beneath me and I have to sit down. I just have to. 37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
I was very upset with this turn of events.

I don't know, but this part definitely brought tears to my eyes
.."
I totally agree with you. I felt it was unnecessary.
DQ's for Chapters 20-2522. Ben and Cillian aren't there so I suppose it could mean two things: either they were killed by the others or they chose not to come. I hope it's the second one
23. I think it was a very unselfish decision of Todd and Viola not to go into other settlements. It would be much better for them in some ways if they did as they could get supplies and support but I suppose they would then leave a trail in the peoples' noise for the army to follow. I think a good decision
24. I still have no thoughts on what the unknown history of Prentisstown could be. It's got to be something to do with the women
25. I think the army have used Todd as an excuse to start their plan for take over. I think they still want to capture him because they don't want him to warn any of the settlements
26. The noise does seem to be in the same language whether you're an animal or a person. Although when they met the Spackle the noise was different, Todd said that it was pictures and things he couldn't understand.
27. I don't know why Aaron chooses this line of preaching. I suppose it's a pretty scary existence with people landing in ships and Spackles.
28. I don't know if I believe Viola about them wanting to make him a killer but he is doing a good job of that all on his own.
29. The scene with the Spackle seems such a waste. If Todd hasn't gone in there with his knife then maybe they could have learnt something from the Spackle.
30. Where did Aaron come from? I thought he was dead! I am wondering how Todd is going to survive this but I guess he must or that would be the end of the book!
22. Prentisstown men are marching and kicking down door in Farbranch. Todd goes through the list of men he sees and notices Ben and Cillian aren’t there. He says, “If they ain’t there, then that means once and for all. And there’s yer lesson. There ain’t nothing good that don’t got real bad waiting to follow it.” Why do you think Ben and Cillian are absent from the group?death
23. Do you think it is wise of Todd and Viola to choose not to go into any other settlement other than Haven, in case the army follows them and destroys it like they did in Farbranch? Also put into consideration about Cillian’s letter are warning to Farbranch.
yeah, plus it can make it a little less obvious where they are going, slows the army down.
I'm not really sure, I think a great deal of it involves the women
I think that Todd is a planned part of the Army, they can't be complete without him, or if they are complete, theres a matter that he got away, so he's public enemy number one
26. Crickets that chirping “sex sex sex”, dogs that you can hear their thoughts and they can hear yours, giant cows saying “Here”, horses thinking “snake”. Do you think the Noise they hear is a universal language for anyone and everyone to understand?
I think it's universal
27. We learn a little more about Aaron and his preaching of hellfire, damnanyshun, judgement, and end of the world? Why would he be preaching this is it’s a somewhat newish settlement?
i think he's just crazy...but then again most religious organizations preach the end of the world every time theres a big catastrophe, y2k, etc.
28. Do you think Viola is right when she says that Todd that he has an army after him who wants to make him a killer? That if they can make him a killer they can make anyone a killer?
pretty much, Todd is the last of the boys. he represents the finale of the army
29. Todd and Voila meet a Spackle. The Spackle is skinning a fish and very scared by Todd and the knife. Todd kills him with the knife. What are your thoughts about this scene?
I think there was more to the Spakle war than meets the eye.
30. Aaron has re-appeared. He knocks out Voila (I assume with something like chloroform) and knocks out Todd but before knocking out Todd says, “I have no further use for you, boy.” Any thoughts to what happens next?
yeah only because i have read it, im answering this late. i cant really say
Chapters 26-3131. There has been different onions on Ness’ writing style. How do you feel about his grammar and spelling? What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way?
I think it's interesting, I don't mind it, and actually I get more of a accent in my head with the spelling. if it wasn't spelled like it was, i'd be thinking damn-nation, rather than dam-nay-shun
I do think the stabbing in the back is a big deal. It could have been on the arm, or leg, or hand but instead it was the back.I think it's aarons way of telling that he thinks Todd stabbed the town in the back when he chose to run
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
if he was raised to hate the Spackles and believed that because of them they caused the deaths of his family, then I guess I could see why he was so ready to kill the Spackle, but on the other hand, he doesn't have the heart of a killer, so killing the Spackle would cause hima lot of guilt and shock.
I'm not sure actually, only because I didnt notice it when I was reading, or think it was significant in any way.
35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?
No, I think he has consciously decided he would never stoop to the level of a killer
36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?
I think it was a hallucination
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
I think this will definitely lead to the decision to kill Aaron when the final battle happens. I hated what happened, and now I have that bit of hope that maybe it was a illusion and somehow manchee will come back, but probably not:(
38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the follow characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.

Day 6 DQs Chapters 32-37, pp.353-41239. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?
It seemed pretty nice, which means there is probably something dreadfully wrong with it.
I think its an interesting way to show how different groups react to the same situation depending upon their point of view. You can see how each of these option and ways of handling the Noise issue would arise, and the reasoning behind them. Not agree, but understand.
41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
I actually found his arrival kind of convenient, and not in a good way. I would have rather learned the truth from Viola reading than from Ben suddenly re-appearing. It doesn't surprise me that the towns had a law against the men of Prentisstown after what they did, although I think the killing of someone in front of children is a little extreme.
I wasn't really that surprised, I think the book had been hinting at that pretty heavily throughout. I don't think that Carbonel Downs would progress to this because although they don't particularly respect their women, they recognize that without them the town will die.
43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
I think he's just insane, so has twisted it to suit his purposes--although they still remain kind of unknown for me.
44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
39. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?I think that Dr. Snow was a bit off, I don't trust them. i bet we will find this town much like the others, hateful towards the prentisstown men.
It's hard to say, in some towns women seem to be little more than slaves, or dead. in other towns where there are female mayors, they seem to be the rulers.
41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
I think he was brought in to fill the hole, but I can't see that the hole will really be replaced, because theres a difference between a four legged furry companion that has been through so much, and an adult with grief of his own, and the fact that hes a prentisstown man, it will only make the journey harder.
My initial reaction was that men couldn't handle not understanding women, plus the voices probably didn't help their craziness.
43. What do you think about the subtle religious undertones? We know a little bit more about Aaron and his gospel, and it seems just as twisted as he is, how was this able to escalate to the level it did with the ideologies the settlers had for New World?
Well, i mentioned in another question that most of the time religious nuts emerge deuring times of turmoil, or when something unknown happens (y2k, etc)
44. How cute are Viola and Todd? Their budding relationship has been enjoyable to read throughout the book. They have finally come to terms with their feelings for one another, what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see Viola read Todd’s Mother’s journal?
I think their friendship is a good thing, plus it helps him learn to respect women, rather than look down on them like they have no voice and aren't worthy of decisions. A friendship with a woman gives the women of the world a voice, if he emerges to be like king of the new world at the end of the series or something like that.
Part 4 Chapters 20 - 2522. I think they are dead, the Prentisstown men killed them.
23. The army would need to march on the roads, so will go through the settlements anyway. They should go and warn everyone so that the little settlements can band together and fight back.
24. I think there is a big secret and if he knew it then others would hear it in his noise and not trust him. I think he would have found out the secret as part of his manhood ceremony.
25. I think they were waiting for Todd to become a man so that he would fight with them. I think they mean to "take over the world". I think Aaron knew that the "quiet" was from a new settlement ship and maybe want's to stop her contacting the mothership, so they wont come prepared for a war.
26. Yes.
27. He probably had those teaching drummed into him for years and that's what he believes. Brainwashing begets brainwashing.
28. I think maybe killing was part of the manhood ceremony - sacrificing?
29. I was upset by that. I didn't want Todd to kill him. It shows how deeply ingrained beliefs can be when you have had them drummed into you your whole life. I was hoping he would be more open minded - he accepted that women were still alive, why not give spackle a chance too.
30. Someone just kill Aaron already! It sounds like Aaron has been manipulating things. Maybe he was more in charge of Prentisstown than Mayor Prentiss.
I like it. I think it gives the reader a better idea of Todd's personality and upbringing. It probably takes more skill to write it in a way that it not overdone.
Well, stabbing him in the back seems symbolic. I don't know about the significance of the song. I don't know who he would be saying that to.
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
I think it's to be expected. He killed a living being and afterward realized that he didn't have to. I think the shock of it was realistic.
Not sure. I think it might just be a writing style the author used.
35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?
No, but I think he thinks that because of the way he was raised. He's not a coward, just human.
36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?
I think it's because Todd was feverish and hallucinating. Maybe the boy symbolizes the parts of himself that Todd tries to ignore or doesn't like.
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
This is my second time reading the book and I thought it might be easier the second time around. I was wrong. It was just as difficult to read. Poor Manchee. What a good, good boy. I think it is justifiable to kill Aaron if it is because he is trying to defend himself or someone else.
38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the follow characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.
Todd- Kind
Aaron- Creepy
Manchee- Loyal
Viola- Vulnerable
Hildy- Matriarch
Ben- Strong
Wilf- Wise
Jane- Childlike
Day 2 - Chapters 7-12 - DQs6. So the "quiet" was a girl. She's wearing clothes similar to Todd's but newer. So much newer, they look like a uniform. When I first read this part my immediate thought was that perhaps that was the big secret -- the women/girls hadn't all died, but instead might be sequestered somewhere else like a concentration camp? What were your initial thoughts about the girl & where she might have come from?
I had a similar thought. I was thinking there would be outside towns, or planets that actually had women.
He reminds me of one of those evil characters that “gets killed” numerous times before actually dying.
8. Aaron referred to the girl as "The Holy Sacrament", "The Sign from God", and "The Path of the Saint". He also pictured the girl drinking wine and partaking of the host. These all seem to have significant Catholic undertones. What part do you think religion might play as the novel continues?
I think the girl will be of great importance to the storyline. I’m not sure if religion will play a part in the book or not, but Aaron certainly believes in some kind of prophecy.
9. Aaron ultimately envisioned the girl being sacrificed. Could that be the big secret? Do you think that is what happened to all the women/girls?
I think the virus was somewhat made up. Perhaps all the women were “sacrificed” because they were different.
Aaron was probably looking for this girl all along because he believes she is “The Holy Scarament”.
11. The girl seems to not react like you would think she would if the dead couple were in fact her parents. Does anyone else think that there is going to be more to the girl's story? Something that's going to be revealed later -- a big prophecy perhaps, or somehow she's the pivotal point in some larger story?
I think she will play a huge part in the story
Possibly. Maybe separate religions will come into play in this aspect?
13. There have been slight references to the world they inhabit that mark it as different from ours. Two moons. The cassor (bird like creatures). The Spackle. Have you noticed any other different traits?
I remember wondering what a cassor was. I even tried to look the word up on my kindle, then realized it was made up
I think she is being overly cautious. She obviously knows Aaron, and wasn't to be trusted.
I find it a bit annoying, but it does suit the style of the book and feels like Todd's voice. It would be harder for me to write like this as I don't speak like this.
Aaron stabbed him through his backpack. That wouldn't even guarantee him causing any injury. If Aaron just wanted to hurt him and infect him with Spackle blood, he could have sliced an arm or leg or exposed skin somewhere.
I think the song is related to Todd and Viola.
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
It was like a visceral reaction he had to the Spackle, not a conscious decision to kill him. He is consumed because he couldn't kill the animals/people he wanted to, but was able to kill the Spackle. He doesn't want to be a killer, but now he is.
I think he is talking to himself.
35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?
No, it's good that he understands his limitations. But I hope someone kills Aaron soon!
36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?
He is hallucinating. He is very sick - fever, coughing up green goop, has hardly eaten in days, physically exerted too much with no sleep, most likely infected wound, possible infection from alien species. The boy he is seeing is a part of himself. he is also hallucinating Aaron.
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
Noooooooooo Maaaanncheeeeee! I had to put the book down for a bit after that. It would have been justifiable to kill Aaron at any point in self defence.
38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the follow characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.
Todd- sheltered
Aaron- Psychopath
Manchee- loyal
Viola- optimist
Hildy- welcoming
Ben- protective
Wilf- intuitive
Jane- impulsive
Rosina wrote: "Does anyone know if this will continue as a series read?"I don't think there's going to be any continuation for the series read. However, we can request for a BR for the second book The Ask and the Answer and see if other members are interested too!
And I have the complete trilogy too, in the same file! :D So it's making me more impatient to pick the second book up!
DQ's from Chapters 26-3131. The writing style doesn't bother me at all, in fact it reminds me of the character a bit. I guess it takes more skill to write like that as he is having to be the character even more.
32. I guess the significance was that his mum sort of saved him. I wonder if Aaron felt that Todd had betrayed the town, stabbed them in the back, so he thought he would do the same?
33. He is still a child and to kill anyone with your bare hands at any age must be horrendous but to do it when you are so young.... And I think he also is tormented by the fact that the Spackle was only defending himself
34. I didn't notice that at all.
35. I was surprised he didn't kill Aaron. He is a different kettle of fish to the Spackle. I think he deserved to be killed by Todd
36. Seeing the boy was a bit weird. I just thought that he was hallucinating.
37. I was devastated when Manchee, he was protecting Todd until the end. I wish the author hadn't done that
38. Todd - fearless, Aaron - evil, Manchee - loyal, Viola - partner, Hildy - kind, Ben - fatherly, Wilf - simple (in a positive way), Jane - can't remember her
DQ's for Chapters 32-3739. I liked Carbonel Downs
40. I find it so strange that they split up the men and women. Will this be what happens to Todd and Viola when they get to Haven?
41. I think Ben's role in the story is to tell him the truth about Prentisstown. I am sad that he doesn't stay with them but I think he is still alive.
42. I suspected that they killed all the women but I was still shocked when I heard it. I think separating the sexes is the first stage towards it, which is scary.
43. I don't think the author is particularly pro-religion. I haven't noticed any other religious bits apart from Aaron.
44. I'm actually pleased they are getting together now. I hope they can manage to stay together in Haven. Can't wait to read the diary.
I finished the book last night. To sum it up: I liked it, gave it four stars. I found it sad in many places (like when Manchee died, although I never liked the dog) and when Farbranch was attacked. I still find Todd to be irritating and immature, but I remind myself that he is the result of the environment he grew up in, and he's also only 13 (I keep thinking he would be older, like 15-16).The end was quite desolate, you could talk about a cliffhanger! I immediately put a hold on the next part of the series from our library, looking forward to reading that as well.
My copy of the book included a short story describing a bit of Viola's life in the space ship as well as the landing and how her parents were killed. I thought the short story was a nice addition, giving more information about Viola than what was in the main story.
Day 6 DQs Chapters 32-37, pp.353-41239. Todd wakes up in Carbonel Downs, what are your first impressions with the town?
Seems ok. nothing special.
I think the author was showing that when splinter groups occur, there are changes and belief differences.
41. Ben is back? Is this the author’s way of replacing the hole Manchee left for the rest of the story? How do you think he survived? How did he find them? What do you think of Carbonel Downs’ reaction to his presence? What do you think about the law that prevents Prentisstown residents from leaving?
I actually didn't think that bringing Ben was needed. I am pretty sure all the information he had was in the book
I am looking forward to hearing about the journal. I don't really think much of their relationship. They needed to depend on each other to get as far as they did. I really don't think there is much of a love relationship at this point, nor do I want their to be one.
Camilla wrote: "I finished the book last night. To sum it up: I liked it, gave it four stars. I found it sad in many places (like when Manchee died, although I never liked the dog) and when Farbranch was attacked...."I too finished the book and agree with you. I really find Todd immature and a pain. I will continue with the series and do hope that as the stories progress he grows up. But as you said he is the result of his environment.
Vinny wrote: "Stacie wrote: "Vinny wrote: "What an abrupt ending!!! Wasn't expecting this, I have to admit! But a novel isn't supposed to end like this! :(You're right Caron, I HAVE TO read the second book ASAP..."
Oh, sorry. It's just something I say sometimes when people agree with me. I was thanking you for agreeing with me about the ending.
When she first came into the picture I thought something similar: women were separated and she ran away. But I’m not sure what to think right now, the ship and two moons speak strongly in favour of interplanetary travel, but on the other hand, we only see things from Todd’s perspective and he has been lied to his entire life so we can’t really trust that what he knows is true.
Aaron seems the type of religious fanatic blinded by his believes and often taken advantage of because of it. People like this scare the world out of me because they are so hard to reason with. I suspect he doesn’t really know too much and is having his strings pulled by the mayor. I believe we will see him again and I also think that not killing him will turn out to be a good thing for Todd.
8. Aaron referred to the girl as "The Holy Sacrament", "The Sign from God", and "The Path of the Saint". He also pictured the girl drinking wine and partaking of the host. These all seem to have significant Catholic undertones. What part do you think religion might play as the novel continues?
Religion is often used in literature as means to control community and deprive people of necessity to think for themselves and Aaron seems just the man for the job.
9. Aaron ultimately envisioned the girl being sacrificed. Could that be the big secret? Do you think that is what happened to all the women/girls?
People like Aaron tend to fear and want to destroy things they don’t understand. I can see this being done to other women but I’m hoping there’s more to it though.
The swamp is where Todd goes to get away from the Noise, so I guess the crash site is far enough for men in town to not hear it, especially since they are always subjected to sound.
11. The girl seems to not react like you would think she would if the dead couple were in fact her parents. Does anyone else think that there is going to be more to the girl's story? Something that's going to be revealed later -- a big prophecy perhaps, or somehow she's the pivotal point in some larger story?
I think there's definitely more to her story. Dead couple could be her guards transporting her to a not so nice a place and she caused the crash somehow for example.
Mayor strikes me as the Big Brother of Prentisstown but I don't think his influence goes anywhere beyond it.
13. There have been slight references to the world they inhabit that mark it as different from ours. Two moons. The cassor (bird like creatures). The Spackle. Have you noticed any other different traits?
I think the place is connected to Earth in some way, it could be a colony or Earth itself after a natural disaster.
I wish I could communicate with my dogs when they are sick so they could tell me exactly what is wrong, but other than that I wouldn’t want to know what goes through their minds :)
I was wondering why it took the girl so long to start speaking, she can understand and she has a voice (she was screaming when Aaron caught her in the swamp). Hopefully she’ll tell us herself in the next chapter :)
November 30 Chapters 38 - end
45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?
46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?
48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?
49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?
50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
November 30 Chapters 38 - end
45) I loved the scene where Viola read the diary to Todd. His mother talked a lot about hope. Do you think there is still hope, even after everything?
I loved that scene too. Especially that she did it in Todd's accent. I actually do. They seem to have nothing to look forward to but hope is one thing that a person can always hold on to.
46) I get the feeling that people rely too much on Noise to tell them what others are feeling. Do you think Todd's sudden understanding of Viola signifies a new turning point for him?
I think it's because Noise is all around and to Todd, Viola is an anomaly. I could say I hear my best friend's thoughts without her having to say anything. Because 'We have a connection'. I think that's what Todd felt in the end. He maybe couldn't hear her thoughts, they just knew each other well enough to reach that point.
47) Aaron just won't die! Do you think there is any symbolism behind his ability to keep showing up when they think he is dead?
I heard many people say before that if a person is fighting death, as long as they're fighting, they'll go on living. I think this probably refers mostly to people fighting diseases and what not. I think we can add it here too. Aaron believes himself to be this sacrifice and he refused to die because to him, it needed to end a certain way.
48) What did you think of the final fight between Todd and Aaron? Do you think it was good that Viola was the one to kill Aaron?
I was slightly mad at Viola. She killed Aaron instead of Todd. I mean, since the beginning of the book I was hoping Todd would just end it already. Then Viola jumps in and suddenly, there is no more Aaron. At first I felt like she stole Todd's right. I soon changed my mind when I thought that maybe Viola was trying to preserve Todd's 'innocence' if you could call it that.
49) So Haven is now New Prentisstown. Any theories about what will happen in the next book?
The Mayor took over. Noise is basically non-existent. I think the Mayor's going to mess it up just like he did Prentisstown. I can tell you one thing, I was not expecting them to get there before Todd and Viola.
50) What was your impression of the book? Will you continue the series?
I loved it. Todd angered me at times. And Manchee's end broke my heart. (I'm still thinking what of Ben then? No gunshots were heard. Dead people seem to come back to life in this book. Is there still hope?) I will definitely read the rest of the series. I want to know what happens.

Chapters 26-31
31. There has been different onions on Ness’ writing style. How do you feel about his grammar and spelling? What do you think the biggest result of his style is: adding to the characterization of Todd, making his writing seem poor, or something else? Also, do you think it takes more or less skill to write this way?
It was beginning to annoy me but I understand now why it was written they way it was. It kind of shows the differences between the people and what town/space they are from.
That was my thought because I believe that he could have killed him if he wanted. Aaron could have stabbed him anywhere but chose to do it on the backpack probably knowing that it would hit something in it. It seemed a sad song but there's something in it that will probably help Todd.
33. Todd’s thoughts seemed to be consumed by his actions of killing the Spackle. Is this the response you expected? Do you think it should be expected? Does it change your onion of Todd, or lighten the shock of the kill at all?
Well that is the response that was expected since he was told all these bad stories about them. It shouldn't be expected from a kid as young as Todd. It doesn't change my opinion of Todd but makes me sad for him.
I think Todd is just trying to explain to himself as to why he needs to do something.
35. [Chapter 29] Do you think Todd came to the right decision when he realized he wouldn’t kill Aaron? Does this make him a coward?
Yes, I think he did and don't believe that he is a coward but a kid.
36. Why do you think Todd was seeing that boy? Why couldn’t Manchee see him? Does the boy symbolize anything?
I think he was seeing himself as an alter ego. I think the boy was there to give him the courage that is needed.
37. Manchee. How did you feel as you read the scene at the river? What were you hoping would happen? Are you surprised by Manchee’s fate? How do you think this will affect Todd? If he decides to kill Aaron do you think it would be justifiable?
I felt so sad for both Manchee, Todd and Viola. I hope that Aaron left Manchee alone since I think he was just looking to see if Todd would give in and come back. I think the thought of Manchee being dead will make Todd angry but I don't think that he will kill Aaron because he is still a kid who is still afraid.
38. I’m wondering what impressions you all have for various characters. So, for each of the follow characters please pick one word to describe their personality. Pick a trait or description that you think is most central to who they are as a person.
Todd-Innocent
Aaron-psycho
Manchee-loyal
