Buddy Read - Survivor In Death (Oct 2014) Spoiler Zone
I think this is one of my favorites, I love Nixie and it's so fun to listen to Eve trying to keep away from her.
Not to mention that you get so much more with Susan Ericksen. When I have to just read the books, I feel deprived. Susan's performance is IN-CRED-I-BLE!!!!!
Oh, yes! Robert Petkoff, Phil Gigante (does wonderful Scottish burrs), Davina Porter (Outlander), just to name a few.
Yes, you will Michelle. I had put off reading Outlander for a long time but got the audio, plugged up & fell in love! I'm continuing the series.
I'll start next week. Taking meds this week that makes me sleepy. I fall asleep and forget what I read or heard on tape. I hate it.
I will pick this up at the library. I accidentally bought the abridged version and too much is missing in it.
Oh wow, I didn't even realize there was an abridged version. I cannot think of much in this book that could be pulled out and not effect the story.

Afterwards, I was checking the Audible site and the unabridged is 8 hours and the abridged is 4 hours!!! I cannot imagine. I mean, I've never gone for abridgments. After all, if I want to read (or listen) to a book, I want to do the WHOLE THING!
I mean, really, if I want to read the abridgment, I'll just ask one of you guys to give me the Cliffs Notes. But abridging Eve & Roarke? As Roarke would say:
BOLLOCKS!
Finished TAKEN this morning, have now started SURVIVOR. Forgotten quite how emotional this one was. (Of course, it may be because I haven't been feeling well... but I don't think so.)
Love how Eve is all concerned she's going to "owe" Summerset. Listening to Summerset in this audio, I can really see how people think Malcolm McDowell would be perfect.
The beginning of this story was chilling as it was told from Nixie's point of view. I could barely breathe. Then the moment when Eve finds her...
No Kirsten, probably not. This is in my top five of the series...and yes very emotional. Nixie's POV throughout the book is so heart rending.
Yeah, I'd forgotten all about this one. Not Nixie, but all the other details. A sidenote: one of the things I like about the In Death series is the descriptions. Like when she describes the street level LC that Eve & Peabody have in interview, even in a serious point in the story, JDR has me laughing out loud!
I haven't been feeling well... J.D.'s In Death series is my go-to prescription when I'm feeling icky. Started CONCEALED IN DEATH this morning.
I don't know if it is because I know what is going to happen or what but sometimes a re-read hits me harder than the original read. Nixie's ordeal and Eve's reaction to her is something else. I love how she tries to push Nixie on Peabody but the young girl won't have it.
Roarke once again comes through and opens his house to Nixie. Her reaction when she first sees Roarke "Is he a prince" is beautiful.
Summerset loves having a little girl in the house again. He is so sweet and really has a big heart.
I know I keep repeating myself but I love this book.
Oh Sharon I had that problem with ViD. Sometimes knowing isn't such a good thing. And don't worry Sandra , I'm only starting tomorrow.

I've read it several times and every time it hurts. This one, maybe because I haven't reread as much is really pulling my heart strings and I'm only on the 3rd chapter.
Kirsten wrote: "I haven't been feeling well... J.D.'s In Death series is my go-to prescription when I'm feeling icky. Started CONCEALED IN DEATH this morning."Me too, although I feel fine. Get well soon.
Michelle wrote: "I've only ever listen to Susan and the Robb audibles. Are there any other great narrators ?"I love Julia Whalen's narration. She did The Witness.
It must really have hurt Eve to say something nice about Summerset to Nixie;-)I also love Eve's concern for Peabody. The small things. Like making her sit while waiting for the partner
Chapter 5 I love these interactions with Roarke:Eve: "Just wait. Oh, shit, parking. You need a permit. I’ll—”
Roarke: “Please” was all he said, and signed off.
Eve: “Right,” she said to dead air. “Forgot who I was talking to for a minute.”
*********
Eve: "I’ll let you make your own impressions.”
Roarke: “All right. By the way, I’ve arranged to have my ride picked up. That way I can have my lovely wife drive me home.”
Eve: “We’re ten minutes from our own gate.”
Roarke: “Every minute with you, Darling Eve, is a minute to treasure.”
Eve: “You really do want sex.”
Roarke: “I’m still breathing, so that would be yes.”
These type conversations between Roarke & Eve make this series special for me. The little snips at one another, the innuendos, the words of love - priceless.
Kirsten wrote: "I love it when they're having one conversation and then she breaks off to swear at other drivers."Me too. And Roarke always comes back with a comment about it exciting him.
It breaks my heart when Eve feels bad because seeing Nixie having a nightmare takes her back to her own. Go Roarke way to go to make her feel better.
The beginning in Nixie's pov is one of the most chilling of the series for me. I guess it's the first-hand witnessing of these horrific murders by this child who sees her loved ones get their throats slashed and it's descriptive...she crawls through their blood. Man, this is a tough one.
Almost finished with my reread of Survivor. Again, I'll just say this is a hard one to read at times. But there are good things happening also. Love the depth of feelings and care Roarke & Eve show one another as they work together and both realize that the other one is at risk - and both voice that they won't survive if they lose each other. Beautiful, beautiful relationship. Two of my favorite characters ever.

The only thing that kept young Nixie Swisher from suffering the same fate as her parents, brother, housekeeper, and young sleepover companion was the impulsive nine-year-old's desire for an illicit orange fizzy at 2 a.m. Taking the bereft girl under her wing, Eve is determined to make sure the killers don't get the chance to finish their lethal job. From the first, however, the investigation is baffling. The Swishers were a nice family, living on the Upper West Side in a house with an excellent security system. Ordinary almost to a fault, they seemed unlikely victims for this carefully planned and executed crime. Valuables at the scene were left untouched, there was no sign of vandalism -- just the corpses of five people murdered in their sleep.
