I am looking for a book that was published before 1997 I think. It is about a man who plays computer games, something happens and he falls into the game. There he meets people who think that he is god, and they are all waiting to see what he will command them to do next. In the computer world he learns that all of his actions have a reaction, and that what he wants them to do is not what they want to do.

Also there is some romance in the story. I thought it was written by Andrew M Greely, but when I checked his list I did not see a book that sounded like it.
