Lynn (officerripley) | 68 comments Notice how all or most of the people saying to keep calm, maybe it won't be as bad as you think, etc. are white/anglo males? The only exception I've seen is an elderly white/anglo female who's religious & is just waiting for "the better world to come" so I guess this one doesn't matter that much to her. All the rest, though: while males, every last one.

message 1102: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments I know a couple of religious blacks who are saying similar things, Lynn. They believe Trump is part of God's plan, so we should just wait on Him. I say we need to keep pricking his thin skin, hoping he will leave Trump Towers in a straitjacket. The continued discussion of Hillary's popular vote win will help with that cause. He keeps claiming he won in a landslide, showing how much the loss bothers him.

message 1103: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (officerripley) | 68 comments I totally agree the pop. vote loss bothers him; he knows he didn't really win. I think it's the same reason why so many Trump supporters are being so hateful--ex.: joke I stole :D from reductress.com: white male who kept telling every1 that he was gonna burn the govt. down if "that woman" won is now telling every non-Trump supporter "Get over it."--incl. a trump-supporter online on another site who tore into me & another member who didn't vote for trump; I said to her (I mean she was being really hateful) something like "Where is all this anger COMING FROM?! Most of you Trump supporters are being so hateful! Your candidate 'won' (as you keep shoving up our noses), so why aren't you happy?! Why aren't you throwing candy in the air?! Seriously, what's with all the anger?!" (I think the anger is becuz maybe deep down inside they are afraid--or know--that he's a lying jerk?) And I also told her, "If the anger's becuz some of us aren't 'respecting' our Prez-elect enuff, I'm going to try really hard the respect the *office* of the Pres but I can't respect this man that's in it."

message 1104: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments We can respect their President the way he respected ours, Lynn. Trump didn't start the birther movement; neither did Hillary, despite his lies, but he became its face. He also obnoxiously questioned whether or not Obama was at Harvard (when there was publicity about his being the first black to head the Harvard Review) and how he got there. I think the Trump supporters reflect him and his aides. He's a sore winner, and so are they. That horrible KellyAnne Conway seems to be almost as deluded as he is. She actually said at that Harvard conference that Hillary didn't have anything in common with the voters. So a woman born in the Midwest and raised by a middle-class father and a mother who was a hard-working orphan before she was married has less in common with those Rust Belt losers than a born-rich New Yorker who lives in a penthouse and sits in gold chairs? Some of these Trump voters feel guilty; they may have expected him to lose so that they could complain about the race being rigged, etc. Now that they've won and have to face the consequences of the election, they're mad at Hillary and her supporters for not winning. They are also mad because he's not going to lock up Hillary, and he said nice things about Obama. They don't care about all of the Wall Street guys in his cabinet; they always knew that he was part of the elite. But wait until that wall doesn't go up or millions of Latinos are not deported. They will then turn their anger on him.

message 1105: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (officerripley) | 68 comments ITA, Mary. And you said, "They will then turn their anger on him." I hope so, but something that bothers me: even if they do turn their anger on him, they can't get to him very easily--not only the Secret Svc. but no doubt has his own private "security force"--so who will they then turn their anger on? Well, we all know who...I am so afraid & worried about all this.

message 1106: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments I don't think they would physically attack him, Lynn, just write nasty tweets and maybe protest. He has unleashed some hatred, which might flare up every now and then, but I think some of the white supremacist hate groups will disappear once their main target, Obama, is no longer in the White House. On the other hand, the liberal anti-Trump groups will increase. The ACLU has already received a record number of new memberships, and the moderator of the "Protest Trump" group that I joined a few months ago on Facebook said he had so many requests for membership that it would take him some time to respond to all of them. I thought the group would disband after 11/8, but unfortunately because of the results, we will be bigger and angrier than ever.

message 1107: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (officerripley) | 68 comments I hope some of the hate groups do indeed disappear, there are so darn many of them.

And this article (http://www.truthdig.com/arts_culture/...) has given me some hope; 1st sentence of the article: "Over the weekend, Teen Vogue published an excoriating op-ed headlined 'Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America.'" The editor of Teen Vogue is a POC named Elaine Welteroth who sounds like she's really shaking thing up in the publishing world.

Zamboni | 3 comments I'm freaking out a little. I wrote a satirical anti-Trump book: 21 'fractured fairytales' based on our current political nightmare. Pretty standard stuff, retellings of Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel and the like. (Hard-edged, but standards. There is one swear in the entire book.)

I self-published the book, and planned on advertising on Twitter. They refused to let me, because: "We've reviewed your [account/tweet] and confirmed that it is ineligible to participate in the Twitter Ads program at this time based on our Hate, Sensitive Topics, and Violence policy. Violating content includes, but is not limited to, that which is offensive, vulgar, or obscene."

I won't give any details, because when I asked for help on the "Support for Indie Authors" group's 'Marketing and Promotion' thread, they deleted my message as 'too political.' Which freaked me out even more. I mean, whatever else this is, it's a marketing problem.

I don't deny Twitter -can- shut down my ads. But I wondered if any of the indie authors had run across a similar problem, and what they'd done about it. I don't know. I was (naively) surprised when Twitter refused to run anti-Trump ads, but not shocked. But for _book-lovers_ to shy from dealing with a marketing problem because it's too political in the Trumpian era? I'm a bit shaken.

Lynn (officerripley) | 68 comments Geez, I can see why you're shaken. Damn it to hell, I knew this kind of stuff would happen if He Who Must Not Be Criticized got "elected"! I'm so sorry for what you're going thru with this; it's totally not right, damn it, damn it, damn it! If you decide to go the GoFund me route (or some other kind of fundraising thing) to help with your book, PM me--I don't think we're allowed to post here about fundraising or selling-stuff sites; but if you PM me with the info. , I will totally donate to it. Hang in there; I guess we just gotta keep fighting.

Can you PM me with the site (amazon or whatever) URL so I can buy your book? Seriously, I want to.

message 1110: by Zamboni (new)

Zamboni | 3 comments Thanks, Lynn! Consider it PMed! If you do buy it, I hope you enjoy.

I posted a few stories on a liberal blog. They're formatted terribly on the site (they're much prettier in the book), but they give a taste: http://www.boomantribune.com/story/20...

(I hope it's okay to link to that! It's a non-sales site!)

Sorry to hear about your troubles, Zamboni. We only have 30 days until the Fascists take over America. I think we're going to have many more incidents like the one you describe in the next four years. We all have to organize to oppose what he's going to do.

Zamboni | 3 comments I hear you, Lisa. I'm still in the 'flailing around in panic' stage. I mean, I'm not sure what I can do, other than call my blue-state reps ... and donate. Eyes on 2018 midterms, I guess, even though the House is painfully gerrymandered.

That's why I wrote the book, I suppose. Writing is the only thing I'm even passably good at, so it's the only way I know how to respond to this horror. I keep reminding myself that there are 3 million more of us than of them. At least there's that, though it's cold comfort ...

message 1113: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 424 comments I am also in the process of finding groups to join to oppose Trump's policies. The first priority for me is any attack on first amendment rights. I also live in a blue state and my Congresswoman is wonderful as are my two senators. If any of you know of any organizations to participate actively in around issues of civil liberties, immigrant rights, or protecting what's left of our fragile social safety net, please post information about it here. I live in the Chicago area but am interested also in any national organizations doing anything.

Mark,

I agree wholeheartedly. The beginning of this disgusting Republican movement really began in the late 80's-early 90's with the rise of Newt Gingrich. He is probably the most crucial individual in the breakdown of professional politics.

Beverly Garside I find myself having to hope for a silver lining. He has tanked before he's even taken office. The odds of a series of major fuck ups right off the bat are pretty high. He can't handle this, and the republicans controlling the congress are in full panic mode just over health care. They have painted themselves into a corner and pulled the fire alarm. I feel like a bunch of rabble-rousing kids have been given the keys to the family house and left with the responsibility to make it run themselves - paying the bills included. They've been trashing the adults for over a decade and now they have to put up or shut up. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving lot.

Beverly, the silver lining is that now we're getting organized. I live in Evanston, Illinois and I am thrilled by the outpouring of people eager to actively oppose Trump's coming regime. Last night I went to a meeting of the Action Network. My Congresswoman Jan Schakowski and my State Sen. Daniel Biss talked about what we can do:

1. check the website www.IndivisibleGuide.com to find groups to engage with
2. Write to the editors at newspapers
3. Contact your own Congressman and Senators when you support or oppose bills even when they agree with you. They appreciate the support.
4. March on Saturday in Washington or in your own city
5. Remember - Hillary won the popular vote by almost 3million. There's more of us than there are of them. We can do this.

message 1120: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments Lisa, I get Rogan's To-Do List in my e-mail. She sends petitions to sign and actions to take each day. I guess it's similar to the Indivisible Guide. I've been tweeting Congress members, media folks, Trump and his aides. I especially enjoy taunting Paul Ryan and Kelly "Alternative Facts" Conway. Tomorrow I'm going to buy something at Nordstrom. I wish Hillary had won the Presidency, so they could be resisting, and we could be hoping that she can get something done. I'm also trying to make everyone, including the DNC, recognize that the Democrats are not in the toilet as people keep trying to suggest. Hillary won more votes than Trump, both in the primaries and the general election and as happened in 2014 and 16 (maybe even 2012), more people voted for us to be in Congress than for them. The Republicans are a minority party who has power because the system is rigged against urban nonwhites in favor of small-town whites. If the situation were reversed, the electoral college would be history, and Senators would be allocated based on population.

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 424 comments Mary, between the Indivisible Chicago and the Dem Party of Evanston and the Il chapter of what was Pantsuit Nation, I get plenty of suggestions. Tonight I'm going to a meeting of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom to see what that's all about. I may join. Will get involved in Indivisible. They actually have meetings. In the meantime, participating in as many marches and rallies as I can. I got my down coat fixed and new water proof boots. And guess what! Chicago hasn't had any snow since December. Temperatures in the 40's and 50's. I'm not a scientist, but I think there's some global warming going on here.

Mary Sisney | 322 comments There's definitely something going on with the weather, Lisa. Dry California has had more rain this year than last year when we were supposed to be drenched. In fact, we've had more rain than we've had in years. I've mainly been writing. My letter to the L.A. Times, entitled "As American as Jim Crow," was published yesterday. You can probably find it online because you know I don't know how to link. On Monday I bought some Tom's shoes at Nordstrom. I wore them today; they were very comfortable. I appreciated that the woman who sold me the shoes had a noticeable accent and appeared to be from the Middle East. RESIST!

Virginia Arthur | 19 comments Hi Mary, hope things are good on your end of CA. We are going to have to ramp up vigilance of our public land agencies. It fills me with horror to think Trump/GOP has access to our public lands with the stroke of a pen. It's boiling under the surface right now but they are going swarm in soon. SNL made a joke about Trump dissolving the National Park Service but this isn't a joke in my mind.

Lynn (officerripley) | 68 comments So of course, just as soon as Black Lives Matter was founded, *everybody* just had to come out with contrarian, in-your-face other groups (ALL Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, Rich Corporate White Male Lives Matter--yeah, I made that last one up but it's true to too many "people"--yada yada, ad nauseum). So I'm sitting here watching a baseball game today (and watching my team do their darndest to lose but whatever) and there's this male idiot in the stands wearing this *stupid* tee shirt that says, "ALL RIFLES MATTER." Not to me, a$$hole, not as much as people's lives anyway. Rifles! I ask you! What a moron.

message 1127: by Rafael (new)

Rafael da Silva (morfindel) These kind of people shows that not all lives matter, they are not really worried about some groups. They only intend to maintain their privileges.

message 1128: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 424 comments Hopefully we can all keep the pressure up. Every day there is something else to protest or support. Black lives Matter. All people matter and we have to keep pressuring the Trump administration every day so that they can't accomplish their goals of turning America into a racist xenophobic oligarchy.

message 1129: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments Hi, Virginia, I wasn't checking with this group in March. I was too angry at everybody, especially Democrats. I'm busy mean-tweeting Sean Spicer, Ivanka, occasionally Trump, Pence, and Sanders, but mostly journalists. Chuck Todd is one of my favorite targets. So much makes me angry now. I hate the way these people keep saying, "America voted for Trump." No we didn't. White America voted for Trump, but the majority of Americans of all colors voted for Hillary, and we are all real Americans. I've recently attacked Bernie, Keith Ellison and Elizabeth Warren for criticizing Obama. The Republican leaders are not criticizing Trump because they don't want to alienate their base. Black women are the core of the Democrats' base, and yet they don't mind alienating us by attacking our popular leader. I also went after the journalists (I use that term loosely) who criticized Hillary's campaign in that stupid book SHATTERED (which I will still read) as if Trump had a great campaign (which he's now claiming). He lost every debate, had three different campaign directors, all of whom were amateurs, and his convention was laughable. Hillary lost because of media malpractice and bigotry. Trump was elected primarily to stop the browning of America and to put women in their place. He knows that because he's as cunning as he is crazy and ill-informed. When he beat Hillary, he had already accomplished half of what they elected him to do, and he's clearly trying to take care of the other half. Reports of dreamers being deported and brown families being broken up help Trump. His voters want him to deport as many nonwhite people as possible. They don't care how he does it and how many nonwhite people are frightened or hurt by it. I like mean-tweeting his enablers, people like Paul Ryan and most recently Chris Matthews and telling them that when the history of this period is written, they will be seen as villains. This period will be compared with the Jim Crow period that followed Reconstruction. And those who celebrated Trump's victory or acted as if the people who voted for him deserve sympathy will be seen for the bigots that they are. The good news is there are some heroic figures, some of them unexpected--Republicans David Frum, Ana Navarro, and Steve Schmidt and several journalists. I'm a Rachel Maddow fan again because her dog-with-a-bone style is perfect for this situation. Rachel will keep digging and gnawing until she gets to the bottom of this Russian mess. I also like Joy Reid, who is great on the bigotry, and Lawrence O'Donnell, who never liked Trump, and so is really shining at this moment. And there are some heroic political leaders. My new crush (replacing composer/actor Lin Manuel, who has given me some of my best lines) is California Rep Ted Lieu, a fellow mean-tweeter. I also like another California Rep Adam Schiff, and of course Maxine Waters is having her moment. Stay on Trump's behind, Maxine! This is a bad time in our history, but I'm comforted by the fact that we sane, more tolerant people are in the majority. In some ways, the Reagan years were worse because he was a more popular President here and around the world. But Reagan wasn't crazy, and he wasn't surrounded by crazy, incompetent people like Bannon. These are dangerous times, so we all need to stay vigilant. I'm off to tweet my latest advice to Rachel. I think she needs to check out the Stein-Russian connection. She may have been one of Putin's "useful idiots," someone who wouldn't help the Russians if she understood what was going on but was used by them. Michael Flynn did not win votes in Wisconsin, Michigan, etc., but his tablemate at that Russian event hosted by Putin did. And why did she ask for a vote recount? Rachel needs to find out why she ran, who donated to her, and why she asked for that recount. Hang in there, everybody.

message 1130: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (officerripley) | 68 comments Rachel Maddow is great; don't know why I hadn't gotten around to reading it before, but I just finished her book Drift: The Unmooring of the American Military
Drift The Unmooring of American Military Power by Rachel Maddow .
The book's been out for about 5 yrs but still timely as all-get-out; she points out how that smiling POS Reagan basically shredded the Constitution with his Grenada & Iran/Contra catastrophes & how that basically elevated the war-declaring power of the Executive Branch (which the Founders of the US never intended, they wanted the 3 branches to be equal). And now we got a prez who doesn't read--espec. the Constitution apparently--but only watches Fox "news" & "professional" wrestling. So in answer to something that a Trump supporter said to me, "Oh, don't worry about him declaring war! Only Congress can do that." Well, Reagan found a way around that, now didn't he? We really are in huge trouble. (Why oh why do these far-rights love war so much?! Oh wait; because it's never them or theirs going off to fight; they send poor people's kids off to fight instead...forgot that for a minute...)

message 1131: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments I think the sane Republicans are less willing to go to war now after what happened with our last wars. We are still in Afghanistan & the Iraq War clearly destabilized the Middle East. But Trump isn't sane, and he doesn't care about nonwhite people, so he might start a war with North Korea, not caring if the South Korean folks or the Japanese are attacked. He might not even care if the North Koreans reach California with their nuclear weapons. After all, we are a very diverse state, which didn't vote for him. I love how he avoids going to his golden tower in New York, claiming he's doing it to save money when he's really hiding from the protesters. It says something when a man is despised by his hometown. He was born and raised in New York and lived there his entire seventy years, but they can't stand him.

message 1132: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 424 comments His foreign policy is even scarier than his domestic policy. I am still beside myself with the passage of this health care bill. It will be worse than it was before Obama care was passed because of the drastic cuts in Medicaid. Everyone who lives in a district in which your Rep voted yes has a responsibility to get out and campaign for that person's opponent in 2018.

message 1133: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments Let's hope the bill dies in the Senate, Lisa. But I agree with Joy Reid that Mitch McConnell will figure out a way to get it through. He hates Obama more than the other Republicans do, and a large part of the repeal and replace Obamacare movement is about attacking Obama's legacy. We'll probably have to count on the Freedom Caucus (i.e. the Tea Party) to reject whatever version the Senate writes. They are more willing to defy their party and to stand up to Trump's bullying than the moderate Republicans are. It's a fact that conservative politicians generally have stronger spines than moderates and liberals.

message 1134: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 424 comments That doesn't sound like any reason for hope, Mary. All we can do is exert as much pressure as we can and look to 2018 to help throw out all the people who voted for this.

message 1135: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments Our best hope is either this Russian mess or Trump's insanity will so preoccupy the Republicans that they won't be able to accomplish much. Clinton had trouble getting stuff done during the whole Lewinsky impeachment mess, so let's hope the media and outside forces can take Trump down before or during 2018, the sooner the better. I saw a video of two psychiatrists discussing how crazy Trump is. Duh.

message 1136: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 424 comments I'm hoping that if we keep demonstrating and pressuring and doing everything we can to show our opposition to T's policies, he'll snap to the point that even the Republicans in Congress have to acknowledge his being unable to serve.

message 1137: by Mary (new)

Mary Sisney | 322 comments They are going to hold on to him as long as they can, Lisa, so they can hold on to power. I just turned off MSNBC's coverage of a Senate subcommittee hearing because obnoxious Ted Cruz, who seems to be only slightly less crazy than Trump, was attacking former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates for deciding that she couldn't defend the travel ban. The hearing was supposed to be about the Russian mess, not the travel ban. And of course they are throwing shade on Susan Rice. She was so smart not to attend this hearing because they were going to try to distract the country from the real story of Trump probably working for Russia by trying to suggest she committed a crime by leaking names that she unmasked. Remember that crazy Trump called her a criminal. Cruz went after Anthony Weiner's wife. These jerks are going to really look bad in the not-so-distant future when it's remembered how they smeared decent American citizens, hard-working public servants, all in the name of protecting a corrupt maniac. I guess I'll have to mean-tweet Cruz, reminding him that Trump smeared his wife and father during the campaign. What a creep!

Mary Sisney | 322 comments Let's hope the truth gets out fast because Trump is trying the "wag the dog" strategy, possibly sending more troops to Afghanistan. He said "Don't get me wrong; I absolutely loathe & despise Trump but I'm afraid Pence is every bit as bad but just covers it up with that phony "nice guy" exterior." And I looked further into Pence & all of trump's crew & beginning to think he's right. As somebody said on yet another site, trump is just spouting what unfortunately all or most of the republ. party & its far-right supporters really feel but cover up sometimes. I'm so afraid this country (hell, maybe the whole planet) is going to choke to death on all the racism/sexism/sizism/ablism/you-name-it-ism. But we must keep fighting the good fight; just wish I weren't so old & tired sometimes, sigh.

Robby Hamlin | 24 comments The time factor. Trump impeachment would/will take a long time. Pence is worse, but he couldn't get elected on his own. IMO Trump chose him as life insurance, so he won't get "lead galoshes" like on the Sopranos. Circle the date 11/6/2018. The Republican party faces a hard time as they fell inline with the orange nightmare Trump. Never wanted to use Twitter, but in truth, never wanted a cell phone 30 yrs ago either. But my 75 yr old sister - hardcore Berniecrat - convinced me - she was right, it is fun, free, and easy...just the 140 character thing... Robby recommendation @realrobbyh

It's actually helped me condense my comments when I want to write letters to the editor or comments on media sites (like my comment to CBS re keeping Steve Colbert). Mary Sisney | 322 comments I dropped in to vent about the latest outbreak of fake outrage. I thought the one benefit of having an insane, pussy-grabbing maniac in the White House is it would end all of the politically correct demonization of comedians and other tasteless public figures. But Kathy Griffin has lost her New Year's Eve job on CNN, and my favorite white comedian (despite his annoying anti-Muslim and every other religion bigotry) Bill Maher, who will talk about race and thinks like me on the topic, either tried to help Kathy out or tried to get some attention (or maybe is just going crazy as many of us are because there is a maniac in the White House) by calling himself a house nigger. I was watching the show and was initially startled by his use of the taboo for white folks word but then thought I knew what Bill was doing (helping Kathy). The Senator from Nebraska did not look shocked, nor did the other panelists when Bill joined them at the table. I also didn't hear the audience react (maybe they laughed, but I didn't hear a gasp). But now Bill is being demonized by liberals and silly black people. I had a debate with Susan Rogan, who puts out a great list of resistance activities six days a week, about her call for us to tell HBO to fire Bill. I told her how disheartening it is that people are focusing on politically incorrect comedians instead of the rigged-against-urban-blacks-and-Democrats electoral college. Here is what is shocking and offensive: The man who is in the White House now got there by claiming our (half-)black President was not an American and that Mexicans are rapists. He didn't call Obama a nigger, but what he did is much worse. I wish I could do a mini-Rip Van Winkle and take a nap until 2021.

Lynn (officerripley) | 68 comments ITA, our problems are so much bigger than comedians, namely, in addition to our horrific prez & his veep, the elect. college as you mention, all the fascists in congress, on trump's cabinet & the heartless corporate 1% who own waaaaay too many people in the govt. I'm so afraid that any1 who's not a rich, white male is doomed.

Mary Sisney | 322 comments Yes, Lynn, and the media just keeps adding to the problem. Now they are interviewing his awful sons who call the Russia investigation a hoax and a witch hunt while promoting a plan to build hotels in the states that voted for Trump. Of course, they can't be expensive hotels because the folks that voted for Trump can't afford his high prices. Maybe they'll just put the name TRUMP on some Holiday Inns.
