I am finally starting to get some clarity in the authors arguments. He has spent a good bit of time getting to this point.
I am guilty of being the guy who says I am not racist, I have black friends (and family members) ad co-workers etc. But deep down inside I know I have been and can be racist.
I have been the guy who said if minorities worked harder, studied harder etc. then we could put an end to racism and the oppression they feel.
What if economic, political or cultural self interest drives racist policymakers, not hateful immorality or ignorance.
I always thought it was hate and ignorance that drove policy
If anything these chapters (and comments) have been more challenging and even confessional. I have struggled to try and disagree without sounding racist.
At the end I do think hatred and ignorance are a strong force is racism. I am still grappling with how policy is the foundation of racism and not hate or ignorance.
At this point I would be curious and ask if any other readers at this point have the same struggle, or have your minds been changed to see policy and power as the heart of the issue
